Bye Bye Blackwell

I've read a few of these threads and come to the conclusion that 95% of you want Kevin out. Who would you want to take over from him as manager then? Warnock? Gary Speed? I think we need a proven manager at the moment to get us out of this mess, I wouldn't mind Steve Coppell coming here, and he's a free agent at the moment. What about asking Nigel Spackman if he'd like another bite at the job.

I am going for Dainiel Passarella and Alex Sabella, if they bring 4 young uns with them that can pass a ball 10 yards we will be up and running ......

The thing is we haven't had that good a record with "glam managers" - i.e. managers who had a glittering playing career - think Peters, Bruce, Heath and Robson. The ones who have tended to do best are the battling lower division type managers who were nothing more than journeymen in their playing careers - think Furphy, Porterfield (his FA cup winning goal was the highlight of a career spent predominatly in the 2nd and 3rd divisions), Bassett and Warnock.

I suppose Harris is the only real exception (not a glam player as such but wartime caps for Scotland and captained Chelsea when they won the league in 55) and arguably Kendall.

i've said all along blackwell plays results based football and it will be ok whilst we are winning.. thing is that this style doesn't give him any leeway if the results don't go.. he can't say.. 'well we're playing well' .. cos we are shite every week . win lose or draw..
all of this 'ooh we're sixth' means nothing.. shall we wait until we're bottom before we say something..

>think Peters, Bruce, Heath and Robson
noone does well with glam managers .. great players always make poor managers (beckenbauer excepted.. the jury is still out on zola).. so its nowt to do wi' that.. you don't need a fancy arse manager to play decent football.. yeah owen coyle.. that household name.

In answer to your questions Nutty boy ......... I'd like to see Donny Rover's manager take with Speed as his assistant (providing O'Driscoll was happy with that). I think the combo of football played under O'Driscoll and Speed's repuation (therefore being able to attract players) could be exactly what we need.

Don't really fancy Coppell as gaffer. Plus he's said he wouldn't come up North to manage. Stewy Mac is doing a good job at Bradford and he has close ties with the club.

Some ex-BU'ers may remember I thought Macca was being groomed for the time Warnock left but the way he was shunned by management when he did go (and they're all still here) suggests he wouldn't get a sniff.

O'Driscoll would certainly get us playing but it goes back to McCabe, would he ideally still want 'a name', someone to push 'global SUFC' ?

Why do people think Gary Speed would be a good appointment? What has he achieved in management so far? I'm not offering any other names, just wondering what the appeal of an ex-player with no previous experience is? Because so far his managerial experience is precisely none. Oh sure, he's been coaching, but so far he's not actually managed any professional teams. So what's the appeal?

Here's the names of the men mentioned so far as possible successors to Blackwell...

Steve Coppell
Stuart McCall
Sean O'Driscoll
Gary Speed
Nigel Spackman (again)

To provoke some more debate,I took a quick look at the LMA website which has a list of current managers out of a job.

Now I have my own personal thoughts on some of the names below - including some that I feel should'nt come anywhere near the Lane. But could any of these men do a job and lead us back to the promised land?

IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER...

Alan Curbishley
John Gregory
Ruud Gullit
Paul Jewell
Kevin Keegan
Gary McAllister
David O'Leary
Lawrie Sanchez
Graeme Souness
Gordon Strachan
Gianluca Vialli

Oh,and,erm...

Steve Thompson....

Scarily, the list also includes Big Ron,Tony Adams,John Barnes,Peter Taylor,& Stan Ternant who you wouldn't touch with a bargepole!

Feel free to add any more to the list...

Now...discuss...

Thats one thing I don't get, if the players can see that hoofing it long doesn't work, then why don't they just say "fuck you gaffer" and keep the ball on the floor?

Then again, knowing Blackwell he'd drop the entire team and never play them again. He seems to me to be the type of manager who, if he's got even the slightest problem with a player, he'll just flatly refuse to play them, I think this is probably why Kyel Reid isn't playing.

And if you read this on the BBC 606 site,it seems James Harper has been that man.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/F15073324?thread=7009874

Mysteriously,he's now "unavailable" for tomorrow. Fate,or just sheer coincidence?

wouldnt mind seeing paul jewell at the lane think he would get us playing football and i think he wouldnt take no shit, cant ever see it though think blackwells here for the close future at least.

Good grief....I think it's more than true!

Hinted yesterday that things got a little physical in training on Sunday...I believe Harper was the man who confronted our clown of a manager with his bare hands after some heated debates.... Thank you James Harper - lets hope someone sorts this out before we write this season off, and put the club back even more years.....McCabe, open your eyes mate

Shoreham, I think the appeal is that Speed is a young, energetic charachter who knows football inside out. The main appeal (from my point of view at least) is that he could attract big players. He has the reputation of a very good former player and should have no problem attracting high qaulity players. This has been a major problem for Blackwell.

Still, I'd be cautious about giving the job to Speed. As you say he has no prior experience of managing and it could go tits up. It would be a risk appointing him. And can we afford to get it wrong again? 3 poor managers on the bounce.

I'd like to see him as someones no 2. Say O'Driscoll. That way you get the best of both worlds. Speed attracts the name and O'Driscoll (manager with experience) gets them playing.

This is very interesting. Especially some of the quotes on that forum about what Harper apparently said to Blackwell. TBH it is extremely unprofessional. Harper should not be questioning the managers judgement. He quite rightly should not play tomorrow. However, I have a great deal of sympathy for him. I think I'd be questioning numpty KB if he was my boss.

Unfortunately I fear that this might be the end of James Harper's Blades career. I will be very disappointed if that is so. Although he hasn't performed for us, he is a quality player. Not only that, but he clearly gives a shit.

This just seems to be further evidence that KB has lost the dressing room. The man is living on borrowed time. Fully expect him to walk before the end of the season. The way it's going it could even be before xmas!?

I'm concerned that Speed is being considered as such a shoe in, given his lack of experience. I don't buy the theory that he would attract players. Players sign for money, then find a more acceptable public excuse for signing - "big club", "massive fanbase", "great tradition", "always wanted to play for him". It's 100% bollocks. They're motivated by 95% money and 5% by the chance to win things or better themselves. Everything else is just noise.

If you accept that they sign for money then we must look at the current situation. Our days of big signings are over for now and we'd be better with someone who's done it on a shoestring. The likes of O'Driscoll or Gary Johnson. It's time (when it comes) that United "actively appointed" a manager to fit a plan, rather than digging around the scrapheap.

funny because even when he came a couple of mates of mine who were luton fans said theyd heard the players hated him because of his attitude, arrogant was the main word they used.

Similar stories from Leeds fans. :(

Disagree with you alco. Think your statement is a sweeping generalisation and is very cynical. I'm not saying that money isn't a major factor, but other factors such as status of club and manager in charge are key. Do you think Robson attracted Ugo, Hendrie, BT etc purely because of the money? Or let me put it another way, do you honestly believe they would have moved here under Blackwell if offered the same deals??

I would put my mortgage on the fact that those players would have signed for Blackwell under the same terms. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever. United paid them huge contracts and nobody else would have come near 2 finished journeymen and a crock who hadn't performed at Everton (at that time, it was a fair criticism).

As for being cynical - it's just a matter of fact. You can see everywhere players leaving for the largest buck. Sol Campbell went to Notts county because they were "the oldest club in the league", Barry wanted to quit Villa "for European football" then went to Man City. Beattie screwed 40K per week out of us, asked for a pay rise, and insisted he "always wanted to play for Robson". I'm just surprised that some people actually fall for this bullshit.

I guess you have a point but once is enough surely. Personally I am sure he will stay and there are better days to come. It all seems babies and bath water to me. Fills air time unitl the game I guess. UTB!

I don`t think it`s right for you to be telling Blackwell to fuck off blades1889...

I want to do it!!!!!

the reason why I suggested Nigel Spackman again was that we did actually play some attractive football along the floor and not lumping it in the air all the time with him. I also haven't heard of anybody really having ago at him for walking out on us when he did. At the time we were a bit fed up us fans with the sale of the top player's at the time to reduce the wage bill. Also I would like to see Alan Curbishley here if he'd come here, look at the great job he did at Charlton now look where they are & how they free falled when he left.

There's just not talking sense with you is there? I completely disagree that Blackwell would have been ablke to entice BT, Hendrie and Naysmith to the club. He couldn't even land T. Smith, McIndoe and Lita!?

As for your second paragraph: Sol Campbell went because they offered him a 4/5 year deal at the ade 34/35 (can't remember exactly which way around), Barry wanted to cemement his place in the England team and play in Europe (City much more likely to play in Champions League than Villa) and BT left for premiership football. There you, with your 3 examples you talked yourself out of the argument!?

I suppose Kilgallon wants to leave because we are not offering enough money? Not because he wants to play with the big boys. What about Michael Owne taking a 60% pay cut; how do you explain that?

Money does talk, I agree with you on that. But it is not the be all and end all. I'll even go and say it often plays a mojor role, but to say it dictates absolutely everything is pure rubbish (IMO of course).

He's still earning £50,000 a week if he plays, plus the extras.....£50,000 is shit loads in anybody's terms
