Clough says he wasn't in the squad on Saturday because "We simply couldn't fit him in there"

Very strange

Given the subs he was probably going to name, it was always likely to be the case that whoever didn't make the team out of McGahey/Collins/Butler probably wouldn't make the bench.

Fallen out with Blakey according to Twatter..

It's a fair point. I know it's been done a million times but playing a right back at centre half ahead of two proven League One players was bizarre. I know Alcock was good there but surely we'd have looked more solid with either Butler or Collins at centre half and Alcock at right back. There didn't seem a leader there at all and if Clough wanted Davies in there due to his pre-season performances then stick him on the wing ahead of Flynn.

Saying all that his selection reminded me of something Bassett would have done and whilst it didn't quite come off it's nice we have a manager willing to experiment and pick players purely on how they are playing

Perhaps he's not forgiven Butler and Collins for shipping three first half goals against Burton.

Reading lots of rumours he has been told to leave. Hopefully just a case of people putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 408

Yep, it was strange and I guess if I was Butler or Collins, I'd be concerned that an 18 year old with 4 games experience and a player switching from right back had been picked ahead of me. As you say, I think he wanted to find a way of fitting Davies in there as much as anything.

I don't understand this 'told to leave'. How do you tell a player to leave? We either say he's leaving, or we keep him.

Told to find a new club probably, Hotster. Not difficult to figure out.....

Then he wasn't told to leave now was he Rodders. He was told he was leaving.

There is definitely more to this than meets the eye, why would Clough choose to leave Collins and Butler out of the team it really doesn't make sense at all. Davies can play right back but would he be anyone's first choice certainly not, Alcock who is an out and out right back would be everyone's first choice with Collins/Butler partnering Mcgahey leaving the other one on the bench.

Butler could have easily fitted into the squad, I hope the management team doesn't start falling out with players we have had all that before!

Unless he were told to leave and find a new club?

"Hi Andy, we've summoned you here today to tell you to leave Sheffield United."

or

"Hi Andy, we've summoned you here today to tell you that you're leaving the club."

Yes. The second one is much more semantically sound.

And Rodders, you're making a fool of yourself m8. Let's leave it before there's a scene eh?

Probably went something like this..

Are we talking ATM in the porn sense here?

Yes, it was in that little known spin off to On the Buses , On the Busties, first aired in 1970.

The scene in question featured Butler getting to grips with the rear entrance on the no. 26 to Catford with new Swedish clippie Svenka. After tate entrance had been sorted out Svenka then showed Butler a fine example of her oral English skills, only for Blakey to come round the corner and cause Butler to make a hurried withdrawal as Blakey had told him to service the new French model just in from Renualt (Marie by name) etc etc etc.

Something has happened involving him I think.

Butler did most of the club's pre match press interviews then he's not in the squad or even mentioned in the post match interview. He was supposed to be our new leader of men, possible club captain and Giddings didn't even ask the question I suspect because he was told not to.

Purely finger in the air stuff but I think something kicked off, Butler was the focal point and Doyle and Collins may also have played a part and that's why we got the surprising team.

Maybe Clough and his team are showing any who doubted who's boss and he was even prepare to take a hit in the first game to make his point. If that was the case, good on him!

"Davies can play right back but would he be anyone's first choice certainly not".

Of the current options, yes Davies would be my first choice at right back. Oh and Nigel Clough's also.

"Alcock who is an out and out right back would be everyone's first choice with Collins/Butler partnering Mcgahey leaving the other one on the bench". !

No, not quite everyone. Alcock would be my first choice centre-back due to his greater pace, mobility and ability on the ball.
I said so before the season started and a certain Nigel Clough appears to agree with me.

Why would everyone want to guarantee a first team place to an 18 year old with only 5 games under his belt?
If anyone is going to be dropped for Collins or Butler it should surely be him rather than Alcock, Davies or Flynn/JCR.
Did either Collins and Butler have such a brilliant pre-season that they deserve to be straight back in after only one match?

Funny you say this, I was told "an incident" happens at York involving Doyle and Collins. Wasn't told anything else so it's not much use and possibly just hearsay

Collins certainly had a better season last season both defending and carrying the ball out of defence than we saw on Saturday.

One of the biggest failings at the weekend was the complete inability of the CB pairing to carry the ball forward. The other was the full backs not being able to get beyond the wide men.

Both "problems" solved by moving Alcock to his better position at FB in my view.

I think there are too many in our squad who think they should be automatic first teamers. I don't think Butler, Basham, Wallace, Alcock signed to warm the bench. If Cloughie doesn't think Butler and Collins can form an effective partnership then where does that leave Collins?

Similarly, if he wants to play Basham in CM with Scougall/Baxter and Wallace or Reed, where does Doyle fit in?

I thought he'd start with the old guard but gradually replace them with the new players and perhaps ship Doyle and Collins out in January, as their contracts are expiring.

My guess is that the two of them have requested new contracts, or Cloughie has made it plain they're not in his plans and they should look for another club.

As for Butler, it's worrying that there are rumours but there's rumours about everything. Apparently there's rumours of a takeover at Wednesday. I hope they're not true as it would put into question Cloughie's transfer activity. It's a widely held belief he puts a lot of emphasis on team spirit and getting the right type of player. If's Butler's already kicking off, how did we get the due diligence so wrong?

But did Davies have a brilliant pre-season at right back? His best performance's pre season came from him playing in midfield, we don't have many options in defence with only 5 recognised defenders on our books.

Alcock looked class pre-season at right back he was up and down like all good full backs do. Last season Brayford played centre back for a game he played very well, he had more pace than Collins, mobility and ability on the ball than him also. We had Davies on our books at the time so why didn't we leave Brayford centre back and put Davies right back for the remainder of the season? I thought Alcock was one of our better players on Saturday but I would prefer to see him right back where he has played the majority of his career and looked a threat pre-season.

When Maguire first came on to the scene he played alongside Collins who helped Maguire's game no end, there's no reason why he can't do the same with McGahey. I have no problem with Davies playing right back as and when he needs to cover but with our current squad he definitely wouldn't be my first choice.

Clough said Butler had worked really hard in training this week despite being disappointed.

Nothing to see here I think.
