Apparently, Selles changed his approach with Reading fairly early on, because he didn’t have the quality to execute and the L1 hoof was breaking the press and causing problems. Interesting to see what he does when we face the ‘hoof it like you hate it’ sides next year.
I think without a CM or 2 we're going to get punished by teams as we have a soft centre. He needs to play at least 2 proper CMs who can defend and have energy. Teams will just be able to run through us or go over the top.

In a perfect world, we need another RB, an Anel and Robbo replacement, a CM, a CM until January (for Arblaster) and A physical young striker with pace and power.

Unfortunately, we have too many players who we need to move on (to play this system) and won't be able to - Shackleton, Gbric, A Davies, T Davies, McCallum, Robbo, RND, Moore. I have my doubts about Campbell in this system as well.

I'm not convinced that any of the young lads are ready to step up at a mid to top Championship level and would probably benefit on going out on loan.

For me, in the system I think we're playing we have the following who are (definitely) good enough:

============Cooper
----Seiki*------Bindon-----CM-------Burrows
---------CM-------Peck-----------Hamer
------Brooks-------CF------------Barry

*injury prone and can't play 2 x 90 minutes on the trot

I think we will put together a first XI that can compete with anyone but struggle for depth.

Tend to agree about at the back
We look very vulnerable

Defence looks like we’re 1-0 down and we’ve just committed everyone up in the 96th minute. But that’s all the time. Needs sorting out otherwise we’ll get pasted by a decent Championship team who can finish decent chances.

I think the 4-2-3-1 is a better option when we start the league,

Agreed we need rb,2 cb,s, CDM and centre forward ( I'd try Cannon next game if he sticks with 4-3-3 )
Hamer is dropping to deep in this system.

Good test, but still plenty of work to do. Would like to see our strongest starting 11 at Chesterfield. Barry coming in will be very exciting on the left.
Could probably be looked at as a really good test that result, as it gave us a chance to see how a Selles team reacts to going behind in a game rather than scoring first and taking control.

No one should get too excited about us scoring big in pre-season, or less impressive performances like this in pre-season. Truth is we are a working in progress, still more signings to come in to improve us, still probably players who will leave.

One thing that I will say is that in this formation, its O'Hare or Hamer for me (unless Hamer goes back wide). Having them both in the center means we won't have enough strength in midfield. I am sure that will be addressed by the time we kick off.

There are also a lot of players (if this is to be close to our starting team) who are going to have to get used to being Championship regulars, Seriki (hopefully we upgrade), One, Barry, Brooks, Bindon. I don't expect to us to fly out of the traps unless we bring in a lot of experience (unlikely given the clubs apparent strategy), so people are going to be patient as this group and Selles establshes itself. I don't see us as clear contenders for top 2 like we were last year, and the goal should be to make the playoffs by the end of the season.

The goal should 100% be top 2. Poorer league than last season and we’re not that much if at all weaker.

Personally, I don't think he's good enough yet to lead the line, but I'm surprised One isn't started in the middle with Campbell on the left.

I actually think there will be more good teams vying for automatic this year:

Ipswich
Saints
Norwich
Birmingham
Coventry
Us
Maybe Swansea or WBA

There won't be 3 or 4 teams pulling away at the top.

We are weaker though. No Souttar. No Souza. Likely no Anel. No JRS. No BBD. No Gilchrist (who I rated until he got injured).

None as strong as Leeds and Burnley though. I can’t see Norwich being up there imo and I’m not getting the hype with Birmingham. Yeah you could say we are weaker but souttar has been replaced by Bindon who I think has a higher ceiling although souttar was great. Is there much between Barry and JRS? Guess we will see on that one. Don’t think BBD really offered much. We do need to replace Souza though that’s the main loss.

I am slightly less worried qbout Hamer leaving at this point.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want him to, but I think he won't be quite the standout he was last season as hopefully we won't be just waiting for him to pluck rabbits out of hats.

Out of the 2 at the moment, I want ohare starting.

Brooks and Barry more than make up for JRS and BBD, the latter of whom contributed absolutely nothing (admittedly played out of position for some weird reason).

I think Souttar is a cheat code at this level. Wins everything in the air, calm, organiser, good on the ball, surprisingly decent acceleration. Bindon will be the better player but not tight now.

I enjoyed the game tonight and Burton did well with defending deep and closing us down fast in midfield. They were unlucky to lose.

I'm not convinced that you can play Hamer and O'Hare in the same team and I'd personally start O'Hare over Hamer if I had to choose between them.

Seriki was excellent throughout.

Beating Burton Albion in a meaningless preseason friendly is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman...
…….you have to keep busy up front, closing down early, whilst also checking everything’s things tight round the back, keeping in mind, the plan to get your tackle in at the very first opportunity……

I agree with everything you're saying, but our defence is short.

We can't think of Robinson as a starter, Anel is liable to checkout and we don't have a starting right back.

You can't be dominating from the off. You've got to start off by just nibbling around the edges. Let her take the lead and let her get on top if she wants to. Let her think she's in control but don't be a pushover. Keep it fairly even early on, toy with her and let her toy with you. Try not to penetrate too deeply, too early. Just gently play around the edge of her box. Ignore any whispered moaning you might hear and whispered cries of 'Gerrit in box' and just gently push forward, not too far, before retreating back again and let her come to you again. Repeat this for a short period and she'll eventually lay back and be wide open, inviting you to thrust deeper and harder. Don't be put off by her cries as you stick it in for the first time. It's exactly what she expects of you. But don't get ahead of yourself. You don't want to popping another in so soon and be left wanting at the end. It's a game of patience. Make her wait for the rapier thrust. Tease her with a couple of near misses. By this time she'll be desperate and she'll come at you with everything. But don't succumb. Invite her on but don't relinquish control. Let her think she might be calling the shots but always keep on top. And then, at the very last moment, push hard and keep driving on, get yourself deep inside her box and when the moment arrives, fire it home and take the glory.

And that Paul, is how you beat Burton in a pre-season friendly.

I agree we need definitely need a centre back (I’d say we need 2 if Anel goes) and right back I like Seriki and he’s great when we’re on the front foot and attacking but we do need a more defensively solid option there to rotate with him for the more difficult games.

Lovely stuff Jon Bon II

I'm not sure that I agree its a poorer league, Ipswich, Leicester Southampton coming down, to replace Leeds Burnley and Sunderland, I would say that there isn't much between those in terms of quality and Wrexham, Birmingham and Charlton are better than Plymouth, Luton, and Cardiff, the rest are the same teams so I don't think u can say its a weaker division it's slightly better if anything in terms of quality as the teams coming up are much stronger and better equipped than in previous seasons, Birmingham got 116 points and have money so too do Wrexham, Charlton aren't a bad side
