The bulk of the Burnley team was assembled before the latest increase in transfer fees, which had jumped again pre-Covid, which can give a slightly distorted picture. They haven’t had to make many big signings over the last four or five seasons. That has enabled them to retain the majority of their players by offering them better contracts, and in doing so, increasing the wage bill.
They’ve also been able to get the best of their resources by playing a fairly basic style of football that doesn’t rely on defenders playing out from the back.
The question is, how much longer can they sustain it without investment? As the players become older, more prone to injury, they’ll have to be replaced. Unless they sell someone, they’re only likely to have around £30-40m available for transfers, at a generous guess that doesn’t really take into account what the leveraged purchase will cost them yearly. Sounds like a lot until you think how much Watkins cost Villa. Or Joelinton cost Newcastle. And they need to start recruiting sooner rather than later.
If they leave it until they need these replacements, when the players they are replacing are too old to contribute regularly, they’ll be relying on players coming in and hitting the ground running. Like we did. If you’re buying from the championship or abroad, you have to allow for them taking time to settle in, particularly if it’s younger players and you’re trying to build for the future.
If they don’t provide Dyche with sufficient funds to start strengthening and start addressing the problems that will occur in one or two seasons down the line, I can see him going. His stock is still high right now and he might still be able to get another PL job, I think he’d be perfect for Palace and a fairly safe appointment for several other clubs who will prioritise staying in the PL over anything else when they come to replacing their manager. If he hangs around without a decent budget, he risks getting relegated and being a championship manager again. He must look at Wilder, and even Allardyce, whose “never been relegated” reputation has been shattered this season and realise that he could be the next.
I’ll be very surprised if Burnley are still in the PL in three years time.
