I have some sympathy for him. Lots of people try work that it turns out they are not suited for. That can be quite sad and is nobody's fault.
However, what is then the dignifed thing to do - wait to be sacked or resign? In the real world, where most of us live, we would only be entitled to a few weeks notice pay if we were sacked, and we would resign rather than have a sacking on our CV.
However, if you have a 3 year contract which has to be paid off if you are sacked, there is a massive incentive not to resign.
I don't know what Weir's financial circumstances are. He probably isn't on his uppers, but sacrificing three years pay is a big ask. Perhaps the fair thing to do would be for him to go to Winter or whoever and say "look, this is isn't working, give me six months pay and we can say I left by mutual consent".
