Brighton Replay Thoughts

Having got over the usual in-the-ground emotions I’ve watched a few replays on Sky, NBC and Bein and cleared my head on a few things.

Firstly, at the Lane, I thought we had played OK, but we were actually great - everybody had a really good game.

Secondly, Flecky really looked world class. If his smashed shot had gone in, then his performance would have been De Bruyn level.

Thirdly, we were really lucky with VAR. When you see what is given as handball these days Osborn could very easily have conceded a pen.

Fourthly, VAR red cards for fouls are so random that Lunny again could easily have walked.

Finally, McBurnie is a real beast. He’ll put body parts anywhere to win the ball. However, he needs to take finishing lessons from Lunny! Jack’s cross arrived at his feet, completely in the clear at exactly the spot that Lunny scored the winner from against cheating Bournemouth. Lunny killed it with his right and rolled it in with his left. Oli tried to hit it first time with his left as it came across him and he muffed it. I never thought Lunny would demonstrate more nimble feet in a finish than Oli.

Overall on the box it looked like a quality top half Premier League game - I still can’t quite believe that I can write that about us.

If VAR had sent Lunny off it would have been a traversty.

Dunk lost control of the ball, Lundstram was alert and quick enough to get in there first, but Dunk rather recklessly lunged in to try and make up for his mistake and in the process ended up being underneath Lunny when he was trying to sprint forward. No malice or even deliberate foul play on his part, if anything Dunk committed the foul.

Of course Sky and MOTD only show the challenge and not the whole context of the play, and they then make a big deal of it being a sending off.

Foul on Lunny all day long.

Instinctively, from the BLUT, that’s what we thought. Poor touch from Dunk, Lunny won the ball, ref didn’t give a free kick and he was close. Dunk was sliding in, out of control, Lunny was going for the ball.

The ref stopped play because Dunk was on the floor gesticulating that he was badly hurt and it turned out he wasn’t. I think VAR got that one right, but should never have been involved.

Think VAR got it right, it wasn't malicious but I've definitely seen reds given for similar challenges.

Good op, which I hoped might turn into a discussion about striker choices. Which is something within our control.
Instead, we get another VAR discussion, which is something we have no influence over at all.
I understand how VAR is an annoyance, but we can’t really affect it or influence it in any way.
Sharp, McGoldrick. McBurnie, Moose ....... best fit, best pairing, start or sub?
When will the new bloke be fit to start/bench?
