Break the Bank for Gustavo

Gus is a luxury player and we can't afford luxuries at the moment, we need solidity.

All good and well trying tricks and flicks when you're in flying form and near the top of the table but in a relegation scrap you need consistency, accuracy and reliability
fair enough but you can include o'hare in trying fancy tricks and flicks that dont come off as well i think if hamer wants to go back to holland let him go provided we get a decent fee for him

I still rate Gus. He had a very good season last season. He was afterall champ player of the season.
And he does put the effort in too.

I think many are doing the typical football fan thing of trying to downplay his quality in order to soften the blow of if he left.

Wilder alluded that the club are looking at speaking to both Gus and Tyrese's agents about extending their deals the other week.
This may not happen but if both or either signed a new deal that would be good for us and not to see an asset wind down their value and leave for less or free.
But if they left you'd want to see decent fee's come in. In recent years we let Berge, N'Diaye, McBurnie and even Bogle leave for less than their value because they had either 1 year or less left on their deals.

Be interesting to see if anyone is in for him this summer. What would his value be right now?
18 months left, you could see the club entertain £12-14m possibly. Come the summer knock a few more mill off that too.

We have to sell I think.

We start next season with a 30 million income shortfall, with added deficits in concomitant sponsorship deals, TV appearances etc. As a result we wont be in a position to offer any improved deals.

Whilst talking to both players now seems like a good idea, players the world over drag out "negotiations" by whatever means possible until they can leave for free and do better in terms of signing on fees wages etc. A quick look up the road shows what happens when you allow your assets to leave for f all.

Assume 8 mill fee + wages saved = 10 mill ( illustration only ) we have some chips to play with next summer to try and re-build the club , or we sell Sydie/Oli instead and Gus just sails off into the distance next summer for free anyway as a worse case scenario.

Seeing as it's unlikely he will be able to drag us into (let alone through) the play offs this season it doesn't make a lot of sense to turn down an offer considering it's cost savings that will have to be made, not improved deals thrown around with abandon.

It's a strange one because despite all the talk just on this thread about "grafters" who fondly remembers a bloody grafter?

Hamer provides those moments you'll always remember, which is what being a football supporter is all about, surely?

Nevertheless there's always a time when the best players have to go, and this is probably one of them.

There'll be another along some time.

Despite his undoubted talent he goes missing for large parts of a game and his discipline is awful could his recent injury be partly Wilder not playing him to save him from an early ban? With his contract running down so will his value maybe the time is right to let him go and reinvest the money on a couple of decent Championship standard players.

Nick Montgomery got a lot of unnecessary flack in my opinion, I thought he was great when we got promoted under warnock

He got alot of flack because he seemed to have a boot the shape of a 50p piece, so he struggled to make basic short passes to feet.

He was really crap as a footballer BUT he always gave 100%, had a great engine and was a fantastic tackler, sometimes sliding in too hard & getting booked.
He was like an annoying Yorkshire Terrier always nipping at your ankles and a few times Warnock said he was the 1st name on the team sheet.

Monty was what you call an “anti footballer” and the irony was…..as you say his best ever season for us was the season in the Premier league where some talented midfielders (like Frank Lampard) admitted in interviews that they really disliked playing against Monty as “he was always there”.

Personally I accepted him for what he was and preferred to focus on his undoubted strengths….whilst understanding the scapegoating criticism did have validity.

There's no doubting that if you put a ball at his feet, he can do anything with it and give him a couple of yards of space anywhere round the box, he can stick it in the top corner.

In a high performing team, he shines but the issue is that when we're struggling, he's not the midfield all-rounder that you need and is someone we find ourselves carrying at times, hoping that he can pull a rabbit out of a hat. If he doesn't, then there are players who could have contributed more in other ways.

We've also proven that we can get results without him and that the previous MO of "win the ball and give it to Gus" isn't necessarily the case any more.

If he does leave, he'll go with our best wishes - a nice gig at Celtic or back in Holland would allow him to really saunter round in his dinner jacket rather than the hard graft at the bottom end of a bloody tough league.

I really like Gus, he's a great player at this level. We're lucky to have him and in an ideal world we'd keep him. But if he wants to leave... then there are some silver linings.

1) He's not a Premier League player. We could replace him with a player who'd be more capable of making the step up.
2) He's short in stature - we could bring in a more physically imposing player - as a squad we're a bit lacking in physicality.
3) We might get a player that actually slots into a proper formation rather than the constant shoehorning we do to accommodate Gus.

Obviously all these points would rely on COH performing quality recruitment that we haven't really seen since their arrival, but we live in hope.

The difference being that CoH has 5 goals and 5 assists, is integral to our high press and also tracks back. Far and away our best player of the season so far...and probably the fittest player in the squad...whereas Hamer consistently looks knackered after 15mins.

I wouldn't lose a bit of sleep if Hamer left, but I'd be gutted to see Callum go

If a an offer is made, of a serious nature, I think blades would sell. Based so far this season, can't see these alleged £10 mill coming along.

It’s that age old problem. If Gus was living up to his star billing by pulling all the strings, creating chances and driving the team forward, his multiple suitors would be queuing round the block trying to get his signature and we might even get a reasonable fee for him…But if that was the case we wouldn’t want to let him go.
Whereas at the moment he’s really not giving us any bang for our buck…So if some club offered us a bag of tracksuits for him I’d seriously consider.

It’s about time we, as a club, kept hold of our most saleable assets

We should be on the phone to his agent, offering £40k a week to make him the highest earner at the club. Now is the perfect time—he’s out of form, and not many clubs at the level he wants will be sniffing around at this present time.

Offer him a 5-year deal on £40k a week, with a 6-month supply of Mounjaro to get him fighting fit.

Why do we have to sell our players? It would cost £10 million to replace him.

Players like Gus don’t come around often. Trust me, I’ve scouted all around Europe.

UTFB!
Are you seriously a Blade..

Have you given up on promotion already, you surrender monkey?

We could mathematically win every game until May!

😉

I’ll remember Sydie Peck more fondly than Hamer, I think. Maybe it’s just me. I see what Hamer brings to the team but I just don’t find him a particularly likable player for whatever reason.
