Brayford thoughts

Unless someone has seen him play regularly this season, and knows something of his level of commitment to us, this discussion is pretty pointless. I assume United staff have been monitoring him. My only other observation is that from results this season, the defence does not seem to have been the weakness at Burton. I suspect few of us know more than that.

If Wilder can rehabilitate the likes of Freeman, Coutts and Basham you'd like to think he could do it for Brayford.

I don't know if we will play the 3-5-2 next season but being as the wing back role is so key to that system then we will need decent cover for that position.

Wilder and Knill will know what he's like mentally though from working with him day to day and if he is going to be worth a wage. At least we can trust them to make the right call.

There's no way Brayford would come back as first choice at RCB ahead of Basham, and rightly so. It will take a good player to displace Basham.

As you say, Freeman is nailed on to get his chance.

So where does that leave Brayford? As back up? On his wages there's no chance that will be allowed to happen.

Also, if we are going to sell him it has to be this summer, because by January he'll have 6 months left on his contract and we'd get even less for him than we will now.
I think we are the same page on this.

As influential as he's been this year, I ain't so sure about Wright at Championship Level. I hope I'm wrong.

I have no doubts whatsoever that JOC can step up.

So, dismissing EEL as an option, which I just can't see coming off in terms of a permanent transfer, based on the current players, I might be tempted to try Basham in the middle of the 3, with JOC and Brayford either side. Assuming Wilder sticks with this formation, which is far from certain.

PS wages will play an important part in any decision. No doubt.

Beards aren't important.
Your wrong beards are important!!
We've got a better right wing back.

We'll need better at centre half.

We'd want less expensive squad players.

We don't want players who will only play for one manager.
But I do agree with your other points.

I think it's very important that the central defender in a back 3 is a natural defender, someone with genuine defensive intelligence. That's not really Basham, so I don't see that as a possibility.

I like Brayford. Championship level player no doubt. The problem IMO is we've such a tight knit group now he will find it hard to slot in as he's the love child of a previous failed marriage.

The target pre season will have been promotion and mr wilder bought players to achieve that, I don't think he would have handed out 3 year deals to players knowing that we may get promoted and they wouldn't be good enough for league above.
He must feel that the people he signed would be able to do a decent job in the championship. Otherwise all the team spirit built this year would be lost as he would be selling them on.
I get that to survive and progress we need to improve what we have but I don't think Mr wilder will sell the nucleus of a successful side

Managers like supporters can and do change their minds about players, I have no idea what Chris thinks about Brayford but when he first arrived last year he said Brayford is the best fullback/ wingback in the division, be interesting to see how it pans out, how long does he have left on his contract?

Whereas I've always seen Basham as a defender. And one with a bit of pace as well, which we will definitely have to bear in mind next year when up against smarter, quicker players.

Reality is that Wilder will almost certainly want to strengthen in this area. As such, and back to the OP, where this leaves JB is hugely unclear.

I thought it was CW who wanted to send Brayford out on loan for the season so he could reduce the wages and not Brayford asking to leave?

Either way, if Wilder sees fit to bring him back and include him in the squad, then clearly he thinks he will be good enough, whether as a starter or squad player/back up for Freeman. I'm not too bothered either way but will trust the management's judgement.

It was down to wages, that is what Wilder said the other month. It won't stop some people slagging him off though. Funny really because if Brayford had gone to Burton and been shit we would be saying leave him there. Now because he has gone there and done well then it must be because he can only do well for Clough.

Also I think he is now playing at right back at Burton rather than centre back and sometimes wing back. The latest view from one Burton fan: "The returning hero. Four assists, saved us on many occasions and loves a goal line clearance or five. Fear the beard."

Wilder has got performances out of Coutts! fucking Coutts! even Clough couldn't manage to do that. What makes people think he can't with Brayford? Are some people doubting Wilders magic powers now?

I wish we'd had a few more like John Brayford these last few years..

He took a decent pay cut to join us.. showed his commitment to us by putting his body in where it hurts unlike many others..

I won't criticise him for joining FLN at the start of the season.. it was our managers decision to let him go on loan to release some funds..

I hope he comes back.. if it was a choice between EEL and Brayford I'd have the beard

I'd imagine there will be plenty of arrivals and departures in the summer, so a returning Brayford wouldn't upset the chemistry.
I can't understand all this talk of 'let him go' and 'we don't want him' He's a £1m+ asset and, unless somebody offers a similar sum, he's better staying with us.

That's not actually true. He didn't want to leave and Wilder talked him into it, for the good of the club financially.

From the horses mouth.
Be stupid not to get him back and in the team ,he's championship quality no doubt and we are going to need plenty of that

People are assuming that players will just make the transition to the next step it doesn't always work like that ,its always surprising who does and who doesnt

No. But I am doubting whether he wants to play here and for CW.

Will CW have any plans for Brayford for next season especially if Burton go down.
I could maybe see him playing in the back 3 and also cover for Freeman.

He's not a centre-back. That's a job for big strong athletes, not Brayfords or Kennedys.

He got what he wanted from this club then buggered off.
Let's show him the same loyalty, bin him off straight away.

Isn't that abit like cutting your nose of to spite your face.
All our players have question marks against them if they could make the step up to the Championship.
Brayford has proved he can play in the Championship, He also seemed to be very popular at Burton certainly before Xmas anyway.
He is still our player and the only one who you can say 100% can play in the Championship.

No offence, but of course he's going to say that.
And of course, he could have meant it. I'm not going to reveal more details of the conversation, but I'm convinced he meant it.

I don't think he's worth keeping next year by the way - too expensive. But I do believe he had genuine affection for us and didn't want to leave*.

* accepting that he could always have refused.

We are going to need players of the calibre of Brayford next year or we will be going straight back down. Anyone who thinks the current team is going to succeed on sentiment alone is a fool. Some of the current team, and I don't mean just Matt Done, are going to be missing from the starting XI next August whether you like it or not.

Some do forget that Brayford spent this season in the championship with Burton . I have no idea of his match ratings , appearances , Burton fans thoughts .

Personally IMO he falls in the same category as signing Ched , Jags , the difference he is already on the books .

Me I would use him in a PX , as his time has been and gone at BDTBL .

We have new heroes individually and collectively .

Brayford needs us more than we need Brayford

Because that is what he is doing now

This

The guy has made his career in the Championship. If he can play for us in the Championship then happy days surely?

If he is good enough, he stays. If not then get rid. Thankfully Wilder makes these choices.
