Brayford - defending

Both Hammond and Brayford have good attributes and someone else has suggested a mass clear out and keep the best.

I just feel at present we are signing certain players on lots of wages and dread to think what Hammond would want - even at 10K it is a lot.

Are we prepared to pay 10K for a leader - surely there are others about.

Now Hammond is a lot fitter, he looks a good a decent player and Brayford is getting fitter too.

What it all shows is the enormous dilemma Adkins has - he needs to cull and needs to bring in some quality - whilst we continue to struggle in the division.

I don't envy his task, but he certainly has my support.

I wouldn't be prepared to pay him £10k a week if it was my decision. I do think he improves us but I would only consider a salary like that for a player who looked head and shoulders above most of the division (Maguire, Brayford etc). Hammond's got the rest of the season to show what he can do and prove his worth but can't see him coming here on £10k per week. If he wants to come, he will have to fit into the pay structure.

Could see him offered maybe £6kish whereas he might get somewhere nearer £10k if he got a championship club. He might get 2 years with us though and only 1 with a championship club

and there lies the dilemma - he is at present Adkins signature player - the sort of player that any manager needs on the pitch - his player confident.

Adkins won't be bothered about his salary - but we as fans would want to see value for money.

There are plenty of 3rd and 4th tier players I have seen this season that would offer us more for a lot less cash.

KM has already stated we have players on wages not in line with being a 3rd tier club, why would the club possibly sign another player who would surely fall into that category. Hammond may well may take a drop in wages but surely his priority is his family and this may well be his final decent contract so chickenfeed it won't be. Not for me, we need players on the way up not down, with resale value not those with no return, we have been down that route far to often.

You say that but his status comes largely from our great run under Clough in 2014 which was all about keeping clean sheets and he was part of that defence. But he also offered plenty going forward. He and Sharp are our only 2 players that are anything like “complete” rather than having one or 2 good attributes along with some major weaknesses. Brayford might not be quite as good defensively as he is going forward but does not have any massive weaknesses in his game.

Exactly. We have any number of essentially one dimensional players.

The Beard and Billy stand out as being more complete footballers.

More but not the same. Like you say, he is a player Adkins has absolute trust in. One that he “wants in the trenches with him”. There is something to be said for that. Warnock had it with certain players that he took from club to club (Paddy more than anyone but people like Derry, Hill, etc.). Derry and Hill weren’t great footballers but lead QPR to the Premier league because they had the balance right. Their character and experience combined with the flair of players like Taraabt and Faurlin.

I think we’ve a little way to go to get that balance right but the game is littered with players who bring more to the team than can be seen on a Saturday afternoon.

I reckon we’ll sign Hammond in the summer. I reckon we won’t know his salary but depending on people’s agendas it will vary on here from £5k per week to £20k per week depending on what point they’re trying to make.

I don’t overly mind if we sign him because I accept the manager knows more about the dynamics of the group than I do even if in terms of footballing ability alone, he doesn’t look like he’s worth the money.

Realistically though, if he’s currently on 20k a week as some have suggested. There’s no way he’s going to get anywhere near that next season. No PL club will be in for him and neither will top championship clubs. That means the most he’s gonna get is (IMO) about £10k or so per week. If he loves working with Adkins and really wants to lead our resurgence, he should be prepared to accept a bit less to come here in this league.
