Bramall Lane roof

If we get relegated to League 1 it’ll be closed for a long long time!
Not if the fans object. The club is supposed to 'listen to the fans'. And that includes those who sit there.

Maybe most fans think that such minor savings are not worth it for the inconvenience and reduction in atmosphere.

I think Bettis said that they'd spent half a million (or a million, I don't remember) on consulting fees for Dore over the past year. How much are we saving by closing the BLUT? It can only be a few grand per game.

I think it’s a safe bet it will remain closed until we get back to The Premier League, so maybe never opens again.

I think this proves that we have no money whatsoever, if we cant raise 500k to repair the roof its a poor state of affairs. The clubs is sleepwalking into oblivion! Maybe we shouldn't have spent so much money on has bins (sorry never has bins) wages.
No, Bettis said that's how much we've spent on repairing the roof so far.

As mentioned in the other thread, Bettis said that the BL Stand is currently closed for reasons of economy. Work needs to be done but it can wait until next summer.

I wonder if the fan advisory board was consulted before this decision was taken. And also, whether they have considered the fact that some people won't want to shift to a crap seat on the Kop or South Stand and will prefer to spend 50 quid (inc refreshments) somewhere else on a Saturday afternoon. It won't take many no-shows to counter the small savings we make on paying the minimum-wage staff for 3-4 hours.

We have kept this stand open every season since it was built, as far as I can remember, including the many years when we were getting sub-20k crowds. It makes a big difference to have home fans on all four sides of the stadium. A big, empty stand doesn't look good on TV.

Are there any other clubs with a similar stadium capacity (32k) that close a stand if they are regularly getting 25k?
Absolute madness. It's a great view from up there and if the only other seats in the ground are on the wings of the other stands, people just won't bother going.

There's absolutely no way this is saving any money. Yet another blinkered, short-term decision from owners who clearly want nothing to do with the club anymore.

Personally, really disappointed in it being closed off. The back row was my favourite spot in the ground and the stand closest to where my Grandad took me - standing on the terraces - when I first started going.

We all have our reasons for where we sit and why or not, as the case now might be.

Cheers United!

The answers on FH by Bettis reeked of 🐂 💩 earlier they said it was just for the first few games that it would be closed now he as much as said it will be for all season. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me that it is not safe for Blades fans but OK for away fans lower down. Coupled with the owners refusing to pay the Prince what they owe and delays on starting on the academy, as well as a summer recruitment of loans and free transfers most of us can deduce the owners don't have two dimes to scratch their fannies with. Unless they can attract new investment or sell up the club is stuck on hold for a few years. Shades of Mr Chansiri anyone?

Agree with most of this. The owners either don’t have any money, or don’t want to put any more into the club. That said, I think there are three separate things going on:

1. Bettis’ answers on the summer transfer window business made sense to me: we needed to bring in transfer fees and cut the wage bill to stay within the SCR rules. Painful, but necessary. I can accept that.

2. But spending on infrastructure (BLUT and Dore) are not part of the SCR calculation. The block on those things is nothing to do with SCR, but about available cash.

3. Not paying the Prince: who knows! It could be that the owners don’t have the money. It could be that they genuinely think there is some contractual get-out. Or they could just be playing hardballl, hoping the Prince will settle for a lower amount.

This is so ridiculous.
SS Roof went on over 50 years ago and no problems reported.
McCabe's redo of the BLUT roof was long awaited but happened about 20 years ago .
How can that be failing so soon ?

Bettis did say that if the Bramall Lane upper was to have been undertaken now (for the first time) the engineering methods used back then would not have been used now.
How does that square with , say , the Kop, or South Stand?

So whilst we were all happily laughing our cocks off at the Pig's 1960s NS roof ,
Little did we know that our own 40 years younger roof would close one of our stands ,
That schadenfreude can bite you on the arse , can't it ?

Just shows how a government/fa funded roof compares to one from a McCabe (Scarborough development or whatever it was) roof.

I get your thinking! The current owners have have legal issues with the previous owner and now the previous, previous owner over work completed!

The difference is that on finding out there are problems ,we have been proactive in closing the stand ,where as they flagged their way though it a club with the biggest stain in football on it .
As for our stand the scale of the works will be best done in the closed season ,as if the works were done now would probably impact on the bottom tier . Bettis didn't explain it very well to be fair .

I don’t come on here to read sensible posts. Please desist immediately!

Absolute nonsense - I have more than a little knowledge of structural engineering - nothing much has changed in 20 odd years. We might have adopted Eurocodes instead of British Standards (well, I havent!) but that would make f*ck all difference to how you would design it in principle. Im guessing it need mainenance (corrosion protection). Or maybe theyve reviewed the original design or had an interim inspection for some reason and have found some defect or suchlike and they are concerned about it. There are a lot of connections on the main roof truss that sits above the roof covering

Yeah the 20 years comment was a strange one. The only thing I could think of was RAAC. they weren’t using that post 2000 were they?

It was probably just done on the cheap by McCabe.

I hadnt though about RAAC - what bits of it are concrete..? I think RAAC was more like 60s 70s era.. my guess it relates to the steelwork. Corrosion protection (paint) requires regular maintenace - 15 years service life would be optimistic before it needed renewing.

Relocate fans to other parts of the ground, then when it reopens allocate it to away fans only, no away fans needing the upper tier? Leave it closed

If it were up to me I’d have the away fans in the corner where players families currently sit. Move players families and freebies either to the TC suite on the family stand or into south stand/family corner and leave bramall lane stand for home fans.
