Like all Blades now my head tells me we are down. My heart still holds out hope, I suppose there is always hope and until it is mathematically impossible to stay up then we can always hope.
But im a Blade of over 40 years and have seen us in too many crisis situations to know we always screw up when it matters. The third tier of football beckons ominously. The thing that worries me more than anything is our lack of bouncebackability. Whenever we go into free fall we never stop. The only time we bounced back at the first attempt was when we dropped into what was the old fourth division.
Does anybody on here see us realistically bouncing straight back up? Personally from a historical perspective I would have to say no. I think we will continue to fall.
Or have I been gripped by the overall feeling of doom and gloom on here?
So straight back up or another season of direness and gloom?

League 1 is far from walkable. We'll need at least a season to steady the ship and then start a promotion bid.

No chance; it'll take a bit of time to get used to the league before we can become a force in it. All the 'big' teams that go down have the same experience. I'd say we're down there for three seasons minimum. I just hope we use the relegation as the impetus for a big shake-up; get rid of a lot of players and potentially the manager. He needs to dramatically change his attitude and body language to convince me he's the best guy for a fight.

Correct, United have never had the ability to bounce back. Not straight away anyway. In the past 60 years, we went down in 1956, and did not return until 1961, then we went down in 1968 and again waited three years until 1971.
Obviously relegation in 1976 was followed by another drop in 1979 and the ultimate embarassment in 1981 was followed by immediate promotion in 1982. Also in 1988 when we went down, we were immediatley promoted, twice to reach the top flight. But the 1994 relegation saw a 12 year wait until 2006 for promotion and the relegation in 07 will now be followed by another relegation in 2011.

Some clubs have it, some do not. Arguably the pigs have it more than us, as they went down in 1951, up in 52, down in 55, up in 56, down in 58 and up in 59. They went down in 90 and up in 91. The 70's was their worst decade by far, relegated in 1970 and 1975, and not getting out of the third until 1980.

This squad wouldn't get out of the Conference. Well, I suppose it might do - to the Conference North!

Theoretically, a relegated side should really be looking at the play-offs as a minimum the following season, but with the rebuilding we will have to do I just can't see it.

Not a chance of promotion next season. We should set the bar low. Clearing the decks of every player who doesn't earn a fraction of what they get paid. Sadly, that is every player in the squad bar Lowton and possibly Boggy. The better players, Monty, Quinn, Morgan - all decent championship players, all earning premierhip money, need to go too.

So we have a year or two of offloading and / or waiting for contracts to expire. A complete rebuilding job is required. I'll be happy when that's happened, and I'll stick with my club along that road. I'm actually looking forward to it....:)

I've seen Oldham a couple if times this season and as bad as they are we would struggle against them - we have a poor squad even compared to league 1 standards.

I've got a few away days lined up though :)

Ordinarily, I'd be quite content to see us go down safe in the knowledge that we do have a seemingly good crop of youngsters coming through in the youth system.

The reality is, unfortunately, that these guys will be our major source of income. There isn't a cat in hell's chance of building around them because they won't be here. Southampton face the same problems now, all their academy lads being sold and then struggling like hell to escape the division.

I see us staying down for quite some time.

I though against Queens Park Strangers we looked like a poor League Two outfit. the key thing surely as the saying goes ....

when you are in a hole, stop digging. Birch must ensure we don't fall any further.

What I am worried about is that the fans get mesmorised about Wednesday. ***k Wednesday, get back out the division! For inspiration there is Naahrich. Always had a soft spot for them. Good club that has played good football for yonks.

Should we change manager again how about Hoddle? We seem to do well with managers with a Chelsea connection - Harris (played for them), Bertie (fan), Neil (turned em down).

Thats a good point.

I'd like to see United, turn round next season and actually look towards starting to build something for the future than using a series of cheap fixes.

What we need to do is recruit and develop a squad of young players with either a point to prove, or the ability to go on and become top class footballers in their own right, and build a squad of those, rather than relying on a series of loans players to fill in the gaps of a threadbare squad

I am afraid I dont see much bounce at the moment, I think the ball has a puncture and the sticking plasters just arent working, what we need is a new ball, otherewise I think we could be reaquainting ourselves with the fourth division.

Just got to look at the 3 teams that dropped last year to see how hard it'll be for us to come back up at the 1st attempt (Peterborough aside, but they play with immense freedom and are very attack minded, unlike some). Pigs 15th and Plymouth bottom. Even without their deduction, Plymouth would still be in the bottom 6!

Yup - and we should have started the process after Wembley... :(

Interesting stats Axel but by my reckoning they show that we "bounced back" after two of the last four relegations (50%).
Like Sky and the Premier League I have no interest in anything that happened in football before I got involved.
Not where it makes the stats look less depressing anyway. ;)

The board have done what they do best rid themselves of any talent at the club and there is not much left for them to cut.
Why do people believe with the whole team cleared out that this board will suddenly change its ways and everything will suddenly become rosy?
This board stood idly by and cut talent with no replacing it all their way down the leagues from the Premier League down through the Championship to League One.
They will not change their ways they have put us in this position ,it is the board that needs a clearout before this club can start to move upwards.

Yes, you're bang right of course sothall. Personally, the first of those relegations in my lifetime would be 1988, when I was 5, and then in 1994 when I was 11. I have no recollection of 88 and only a hazy remembrance of 1994. The 2007 debacle was the first for me, 2011 will be the second.

Whilst i agree with the general jist f the post, I have to disagree with the bit I have bolded.

Leeds would have gone up Automaticall, but for the 15pt deduction, and Southamption would have been in the Play-offs but for their 10pts.

So it can be done, not by us, but it can be done...

>the ultimate embarassment in 1981 was followed by immediate promotion in 1982
only because brealey (i think) bankrolled the complete dismantling of the team and hired a new manager. he brought in porterfield, edwards, hatton, morris (and stancliffe?).. he gets a lot of flack brealey but saved us that year.. a similar thing happened when we were relegated under DB.. he went straight out and bought two unheard of strikers called deane and agana and the rest as they say..

This is either a late April Fool's joke or a very early one. Hoddle? He's been out of managerial work since 2006, he doesn't like disabled people, and he's also more than a bit of a twat.

Hoddle? My crocodile laughs at your joke.:croc:

After coming from behind in a couple of games (WOW!!!) I wanted to see when the term, "Bounceback" or "Bouncebackability" was last used.

This thread came up - how interesting!

Some of the comments still apply - worth a quick skip back through them.

Wilder seems to be instilling a bit of the Bounceback effect doesn't he? :D
