changing the style is simple pinchy.. if you get players who can actually 'play' then they will naturally adopt a more passing style as it is instinctive.. i'm not advocating outlawing hoof.. you need to mix it at times

the basic standard of most of our players is appalling ..even for this level.. doyle couldn't trap a bag of cement.. porter can only 'head' the ball, flynns second touch is a tackle
edit.. and then he falls down!! guffaws :D

We had a patient approach in Wilson's first season and it worked well because we had better players than everyone else - for almost the full season.

Regarding playing style - for inspiration we should probably look to Germany and their top sides.

who play an english style incidentally.. Beckenbauer decided their previous sweeper style was a bag of shit and changed it all lock stock and barrel a couple of years back.. got to love the Germans

Sorry mate but this post is a little too defeatist for me..let's get something straight.. WE ARE THE TOP TEAM AT THIS LEVEL.. the key words are 'at this level'.. at this level we should be Man utd

and anyway, not just the top teams but ones like yeovil, brentford and bournemouth seem to find them though as this years table will testify

this football thing really is quite simple. you need to get the best set of players FOR YOUR LEVEL.. at this level that means players who can control the ball and make a simple pass..

we don't want total football (yet) but players should be able to do the basics instead of getting plaudits for putting shifts in.. any one of us could put a shift in. problem is we're shit footballers, that's why we're not on the pitch.. (one would hope.. looking at Doyle i sometimes wonder)

noone is advocating trying to buy Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo, so this analogy is laughable.. if you consider that our average attendance and hence revenue is four times that of most of our rivals then it should be simple to identify the best players at this level and create a team around them.

how come that Yeovil could find the lad that scored the second goal (boy who we could do with him) and the right back from Arsenal .. we end up with old pro's looking for a payoff and kids who aren't quite ready
what is going on?

Crewe don't finish higher than us.. i hear this time after time.. their budget is around 35 pence.. it is a miracle they finish where they do (actually it isn't .. it is because they have a philosphy and stick to it)

Hence I am not calling for hoof. I'm challenging Pinchy's myth that if we start stroking the ball around we'll become European champions.

This season has been the most boring on record for many - and that's with a footballing manager.

Football can be exciting, and boring, and fail, and succeeed, in a whole range of styles. Pinchy thinks there's only one, I think there's lots.

My only "spec" is that the game needs to be played with tempo, and is only really exciting in the final third. Pinchy thinks this translates directly to hoof, I don't.

The fact remains that we are not on a position to immediately restructure the team into a mould that we might want long term. That means playing to the strengths of the players we have, not insisting the players play a certain way no matter what their abilities. This is not a problem the top, super rich teams have.

.....as for next year then.. we are as big as wolves.. they have more money but are in total freefall......

Therein lies one of the biggest failings of so many Blades fans. I'd say we are no where near as big as wolves at the moment!

We are a League One Club of near enough 4 seasons....thats how big we are!

wolves are a league one club with similar attendances.. what 's the difference??

‘You have a couple of bad years and a losing mentality sets in,’ said Saunders. ‘You change manager, lose the best players from the relegated team, like Steven Fletcher, Matt Jarvis, and the players here disappointed that nobody’s took them. There’s uncertainty all round and, before you know it, you can’t win a game in Championship.’
Many of those sat high in the Stan Cullis stand left early, utterly dejected, while a few joined in the protests.
The imposing structure cost £18million. It was conceived when the club were in the Premier League and hosting the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea once a year. It was not designed with the modest travelling support of Stevenage and Colchester in mind.
The club is likely to be crippled, with both a financial hangover from the £40m renovation of Molineux — on hold for the moment — and a £25m wage bill to contend with. Link.

And there you have it. Good, honest South Yorkshire manager exceeds fans' expectations yet is still not appreciated and driven out by (some) fans. Successive crap managers replace him (be careful what you wish for), best players discarded, freefall and Third Division. I mean Wolves. Obviously. :D

Forget the blueprint, just resist any offers for players for 18 months and we'll soon find ourselves moving in the right direction.

Really?

No Mrs. Doyle, Real Aleistasti may have offered £2m but we insist you stay for another 3 years.

Mr, Chappell, you've achieved precisely nothing in your three years on the fringes, but we're turning down Mansfield's £50k

Mr. Ironside, You haven't scored, or even looked like scoring, in a big boy's game. No, you can't go to Southend for £200,000.

Ryan Flynn, No don't be silly. Of course we won't let you go to Inverurie Locos. You may be a winger who has no pace, can't beat a defender or get a half-decent cross in, but we'll fight tooth and nail to keep you.

Personally, I think we should encourage, rather than resist, offers for the vast majority of our players, including one or two 'boy band' favourites.

Great call once more to bring Warnock back. Some of our fans must have their heads screwed on the wrong way because they can only look backwards. We don't need Warnock in the same way we don't need any other previous Blades manager. I want to see us move forward and if for one minute I thought bringing Warnock in would do that (personal view of the man on one side here) I would go for it. All I want is to see SUFC progress and get out of this shit pit of a division. The only way we can do that is build long term. Its about seeing progression over 3-5 years and if that means we take a step back for a season then I am happy to take that.

I want to see a manager who bloods the kids who are good enough but more importantly is allowed to keep a team together. People talk about how Ferguson and Man United manage it. While the disparity between the clubs is easy to see, there is one thing we could do to follow their blueprint. Keep the team together for 2 seasons. Have faith in whoever it is that they will lead us forward with a combination of our own youth and good players from elsewhere. Yes a couple of loanees to add some much needed quality at this level but minimum spend on loans.

Finally style. If we have to mix it up once in a while thats fine by me, but overall we should look to play the game at pace on the deck. It doesn't have to be Barcelona but lump it long and hope also isn't the answer. FFS I want to enjoy watching my team play, I want to be thrilled that while it doesn't always go to plan we actually look like we have a gameplan and execute it. We occasionally score some nicely worked goals where players look to get round the back of full backs and get crosses in. Its not complicated and sometimes you do need a big un up front but it doesn't have to be stone age football.

"I want to see a manager who bloods the kids who are good enough"

What a pleasure to read those two crucial words!

Good enough to make a difference in a promotion push. Blooding kids for the sake of it is neither use nor ornament. We need to play the best players in the best positions. I'm sick and tired of hearing about how we should play eleven U21's because they are local lads who came through the academy. If they are going to end up at Torquay and York scuffling around in League 2 and below that doesn't help us. Better to pack em off on loan/not renew contracts and bring the next lot through.

Football is pretty straight forward. You pick your best players to play in the team in the relative positions. Forwards playing as wingers or central midfielders is plain lunacy. Square pegs in square holes and if your not good enough (no matter your age) you don't play.

Ironically, you could hardly have described Warnock's years in charge better if you'd tried.

Yes, really.

I was eluding to the the sale of Blackman and our other better players over recent years that have either not been replaced or have been replaced with shite.

I do hope Mr Ironside doesn't read this forum ...

I suspect you only mean the players we're likely to get offers for, rather than any offer.

One of the advantages of being shit is that you don't have to fear losing your payes. We don't have to fear losing our players right now. Almost any of them.

Edit - missed your reply, sorry. Pinchy is correct though, however hard to read it would be for some of our players.

Biggest fear at the mo is that nobody wants one of 'em.

Why? Is he of the opinion that he is better than his performances and statistics suggest? Or does he think himself beyond criticism?

Yes I never remember 4-5-1 being called 4-3-3 or anyone being played out of position but you keep your own agenda moving on.

The current blueprint has just come to light.
It explains a lot, anyway

1. Appoint a Director of Football to oversee everything else that doesn't need to be done by the manager to give him more time to devote to the first team matters.

2. Get in an established lower division manager who has enjoyed some success in the lower leagues, and someone who knows what the club is about, and what the fans crave. Someone like Chris Wilder would be a brave appointment but i think it would work

3. Get back to basics on the pitch, a direct, up and at em style works for Sheffield United, and in my lifetime we have had more success playing a high tempo direct style of football. This passing football looks good when it achieves results, but looks bloody awful when it doesn't. If we are serious about getting out of this division then we need teams to come to the Lane and know they are going to be involved in a battle.

4. Appoint a decent fitness coach. A lot of the side seemed to have ran out of steam early on games last season, and this is why there was an apparent lack of effort and conviction. Give the fitness coach instructions to work the players as hard as he possibly can, so we can kick off the season with the fittest team in the league, and be ready to hit the ground running.

5. A new strikeforce. I think we could get Darius Henderson back as the focal point of our attack, think he is out of contract and would be ideal for a side looking to batter their way out of League 1, strong, direct and a huge physical presence, and also a lot better footballer than people give him credit for. Would be the ideal man for the job.

Wasn't far wrong was i?
