Morning all,

Just published a preview pod with Blades Analytics, talking - of course - about Friday night's game with That Lot.

We debunk some derby-day cliches (formbook out the window! Pressure is all on us!). We also talk about the quality of the opposition (04:05) and how they might approach the game (13:25), then some quick thoughts on the Forest game (26:50), plus hot takes on Paul Coutts (32:50) and Ben Woodburn (37:50).

I felt less nervous after recording this. Fate-tempting may have occurred, but I'm assured that the Football Gods are not a subscriber to the podcast.

Oh yeah, I'm also a guest on Football Heaven tonight which should be... interesting. A couple of guys from the opposition's podcast are on too but I'll try and maintain a level of civility. Wish me luck.

Cheers for listening - COYRAWW!

Don't try too hard Beans lad, especially if that arrogant so & so James Marriot (Is that his name?) is one of them. ;)

Good work fella. I'm even going to tune in to FH this evening now there's some quality content on there

Good stuff again fellas. I’ll be driving down to Bristol at 18:00 tonight so will tune in and see how far south I can get the RS signal!

The form book does go out of the window.

Just look at the two matches last season.

Wednesday were expected to win at Hillsborough and we were expected to win at Bramall Lane.

Neither happened.

Just sit there all smug reminding the grunter that they were adamant we were shit, that we'd be relegated before Christmas last season and had an ageing forward line that would struggle to score in La Liga (although I think they've downgraded it now they're shitter than us)
If all else fails smack the twat in the face with a shovel

Blades Analytics Beans Where do you guys get your data from? It's always an interesting listen but would like to have a read over some of the stats outside the podcasts.

For instance, your cohost says Wednesday are poor with real conviction obviously based on statistics, but is there a central pool you draw from?

Apologies if that's been asked before!

Well, I can't promise that :D

My point was more that I don't think it's anything particular to derbies - sometimes teams just don't win football matches they were supposed to.

With some hindsight, we weren't exactly big underdogs at Hillsboro - we'd won four of our previous five in the league. In fact a quick look at results up to that point shows Wednesday had 13 points, we had 15. Unless I've done that wrong, we were above them in the league.

I think we were all in full "La Liga" hype mode going into that game :) I'd be genuinely curious to know what the odds were going into that game, but I bet (ho ho) they weren't 6/1 on an away win as they are for Friday.

I look at things like Statszone (mobile app that pulls Opta data - only on iOS though) for match-by-match info, Whoscored have good team data (eg, that's where you can see that Wednesday face more shots than any other team), Infogol have "expected points" tables which use xG data (they reckon we're the 3rd best team in the league and Wednesday the 22nd) and I also keep an eye on Experimental 361.

I know Jay used to use Stratabet's data but unfortunately they've closed down their football division recently, so not sure what he's using at the mo!

Basically, pull together bits from lots of different sources to try and get an overall picture. The shorthand is as you say "Wednesday are poor" but the reason for that statement is that it's backed up by pretty much any measurement you want to use - shots taken, shots faced, xG for and against, touches in opposition box, etc. The league table is starting to back it up but they've been a poor team all season and some fortuitous results had masked that.

Of course, who knows what'll happen on Friday...

Interesting comments re Woodburn, seems he has been much more effective/impactful during his cameos than most/all of us thought.

Spot on Beans re: the Freeman criticism post-Forest being a case “retrofitting a narrative onto a couple of moments that led to goals”.

The Woodburn defence won’t go down at all well with those that have apparently made a decision on him...

Enjoyed that myself!

I agreed with that caller who said it was miles better than usual. Both parties were very good and realistic. Also liked the way the armed robber was ignored/git rid of. Kept the signal all the way!

The Wednesday pair were - gulp - very pleasant company, good to get an intelligent perspective on their team as I normally try not to pay attention to what’s happening in S6...

Re podcast: Love how you both have analytical fact-based minds, yet constantly pulled your comments so as not to curse us with superstitious magic. The human mind is wonderful.

Another great pod, beans

Haha it’s so stupid isn’t it. Been tying myself in mental knots over this for weeks. These derbies do weird things to people...

I loved the bit when you said "we are going to batter you piggy bastards" then smashed the studio up.

That’s a sample size of two, and not remotely analytical.

Good show. I would listen more often if they had intelligent, articulate guests and callers on.

Was Victoria (I) Wood wearing her Wednesday outfit?

Good listen.

Very little by way of logic to suggest Wednesday have a hope in hell on Friday.

I agree, it was a much better listen than usual.

Funnily enough, I consciously thought she had a lovely soft voice, but assumed the’d be a bit of a munter. I think I may have misjudged her slightly, very easy on the eye.
