Off the top of my head:

Keith Edwards (the most famous - 75-78 and 81-86)
Jon Harley (2 loan spells in 02 and 03 and then permanently in 04)
Jonathan Hunt (loan in 98 and then permanently in 99)
Andy Campbell (2 loan spells in 98 and 99)
Dean Windass (loan in 02 and then permanently in 03)
Wayne Quinn (permanently 97-01 and then back on loan in 02-03)
Ian Bennett (loan in 04-05 then permanently in 06)
Paul Gerrard (loan in 03-04 and then permanently in 06)
Neil Collins (loan in 05-06 and then permanetly in 2011)
Joe Kitchen - our one time all time leading scorer pre WWI - we flogged him to Rotherham around 1919 and then got him back the next year
Des Thompson - 50's reserve goalie who we released in 62, but then got him back from Buxton on a short term contract in 63 when both Hodgkinson and Widdowson were injured
Jeff King - released in auutumn 82 due to "personal" issues, then re-signed on New Year's Day and scored on his return that day
Rob Ullathorne - signed Nov 00, but released at the end of the season when new terms could not be agreed. Came back in Jan 02 with his tail between his legs.

Edit:

yep

Clive Mendonca - 86-88, sold to Rotherham and re-signed 91 before being flogged to Grimbsy
Billy Sharp we all know about.

Windass. He was on loan, left, came back permanent I gather. PS this was written before I knew Darren`s entry was above.

Jonathan Hunt. What a nightmare. What I noticed about Deane was how much he had worsened as a player 4 years on, after returning in 1997. In Championship, he missed an amazing number of chances, before going to Benfica.

Yes I think you are right.

yes - loan 2010 and then loan again 2010-11

On a similar vein

Kyle Bartley - loan 2010 and loan again 2010-11
Steve Simonsen - loan 2010 and permanently 2010-12
Elian Parrino - loan 2011 and then short term contract 2011-12

Also

Jim Brown - signed 74 and went off to USA 1979, then re--signed as short term goalie cover in 1983.

So...two legends..Keith n Brian...and a small army of reasonable, good, average and dreadful players. Who did well on return?
Deano, Edwards..anybody else?

And how many were we expecting great things from on their return but which didn't materialise:

Harley, Mendonca, Sharp...

And yet he still managed to score 1 in 2 or thereabouts. Not to mention a staggering 'second debut' performance against Sunderland in which he didn't score.

My God Darren! You've got too much time on your hands pal!!!
Either that, or, you've the best memory ever!!!

David Unsworth - the cnut

Peschisolido? Sure he was on loan, went to Norwich then we signed him permanently?
Matt Hill loan last season, left, now signed.

Yes, Peski is right - on loan Jan-Feb 01, then we signed him permanently in July 01. I wouldn't count Hill (or Cotterill) as having two spells. They came on loan to us to the end of the season and then signed permanently in tyhe close season, so there was no interruption in their United playing careers.

Trevor Ross, Chris Kamara

Yep, Ross on loan from Everton Dec 82-Jan 83, then signed permanently from AEK Athens in Jan 84 (and released in the summer of 84).

Kamara on loan from Luton Nov 92-Feb 93, then signed permanently in the summer of 93.

Also Bobby Davison 0n loan from Leeds March-May 92, signed permanently from Leicester Oct 93.

Harry Thickett (1891, then 1893 - 1904) come on Darren!
Chrissy Wilder 1986–1992 and 1998
