What a day that was. Pre match all the grunting from the porkers about how they were gunna steamroller us and how it was gunna be easy for em....oh how i laughed at them. Thank you Bassett's Blades for making me a very very happy young fella that day.

It's funny to think that that match is closer in time now to 1968 than it it is to now.

First United kit I can remember, still one of my favourites.
No feeling more electric than putting those bastards to the sword.

And well, Dane Whitehouse: forever my hero.

Yep. Despite being old enough to see all the Woodward Currie Years - and before - Dane is my all time favourite Blade and that goal still one of the most enjoyable. One of the great days.

I remember the unrest around the club in thr build up to the game. Deane had been out for weeks with his illness and then we sold Agana to Notts County the week before the game. There was a special phone in with Bob Jackson and Derek Dooley was on to justify the transfer, although I can't remember what he said. Bob Jackson responded to one caller, asking where the goals were going to come from with "Think back to last season when you went on that incredible run, who scored a fair few goals? Ian Bryson"
Of course, we now know that Deano came back that day and was unplayable.

I just properly leapt out of my seat when Whitehouse's goal went in. Amazing that it can still conjure up such emotion so many years later! Bizarrely, I still get the same feeling when watching Alan Cork's goal at Wembley, even though i know what is coming next...

That Pig squad was a real cunts gallery. Hirst, Warhurst, Palmer, Worthington, Sheridan. Urgh, awful.

1hr 13 mins in after Lodge wrongly gives a corner to the Pigs and Sheridan just takes the corner and kicks it straight over the goal line. 1-0 down in a Derby and he has some class to do that. Always had respect for him after that. Plus he was a good player and many of the Pigs turned on him later. Likes a pint and a scrap as well, could have been one of Bassets Boys!

I always thought Sheridan was a bit of a tunc but he could play a bit. When I look at the rest of that line up I'm amazed it was so fawned over by the press at the time. A bunch of donkeys and lightweights, in all honesty.

Forget all the media bollox back in the day about how great some of the porkers were with such class footballers as Pob Palmer, Big chin Warhurst and flapper woods. They had two decent players only. Sheridan and Thirsty. Other than then they were an overrated pile of shit. Not like the grunters and the local press to over egg em is it! Even today, you take the little diver out of their team and they have got themselves a very very ordinary championship team in exchange for a serious pile of cash spent. They arent as good as they like to think they are. Nowt changes with them tosspots.

How your memory plays tricks, great result but what a bag of shite that game was, oh and if you missed the commentator saying it Brian Deane had been ill with glandular fever.;)

I'm as big a detester of those twats as the next man but didn't they finish that season in 3rd place in the top flight? That might say more about the standard of English football at the time, and yes, we made them look very ordinary over 2 matches, but they had a decent squad.

but they had a decent squad.

For that time maybe..but they were still a steaming pile of shite bar 2 players. Remember this was a time when Hirst was classed as Englands joint second best centre forward with Shearer (both behind Deane ;) ) and Batty and Pob Palmer were Englands midfield. Fuk sake those two couldnt get in Utds side now. They did their usual, they squawked and flattered to deceive a lot and then when a proper footballer turned up (young Brian Deane) they got a right pasting. They were overrated shite.

My wife bought me the home shirt that season, and it still fits me now :-)

Don't remember that but will check the video; if true then yes he's gone up in my estimations. Still wish he hadn't scored the winner against Man Utd in the League Cup Final the year before though. 25 years what a scary thought and what a rollercoaster it's been.

Prior to the game a Pig mate said he and millions of like minded Porkers had bought tickets for that standing corner between the kop and John Street - where I had my season ticket. Yep they were going to take it over
Well about 200 came in surrounded by loads of police. Almost felt sorry for the tossers they thought they would walk all over us in more ways than one, they took some right stick. At half-time they sneaked out of the ground with their little curly tails between their legs - bless em

Hoyland received a lot of stick from our fans around that time but he had a very good game in that match. I was told that Bassett had told him to "stop" Sheridan from playing and it worked well for us

A wonderful, wonderful day. I remember them chanting "Where's Agana gone?" and us responding with "Oh Ronnie Ronnie... Atkinson" I was a student in Birmingham at the time and almost felt like I was floating when I travelled back I was on such a high.
