I'm convinced that as bad as today was, if we can take the lead in a game we'll see a different United. Conceding in such awful circumstances so early is a killer, especially with the fans then getting on the players backs - understandably. Its early days still and we need to let the players settle and be patient. Forget about promotion right now, its just about the next game and putting in a better performance. Long will be dropped for a new goal keeper, hopefully so will Done but sadly Chapman looks poor too! Playing 4-4-2 with no quality from the wings is never going to work but Wilder doesn't know that before each game that the team will be so poor, so in a way we can't blame him, but after today we need to bin off 4-4-2 and play 4-5-1 and just keep it tight and hit teams on the break, although pace would help obviously! Still not over panicking just yet. Look at the rest of the league and you can see all sorts of weird results, its still not yet settled down and we can't judge us yet, as bad as it is. We can't keep changing and not expect that things take time.

Clearly Kevin McCabes Death Star is fully operational

I'm glad we're not fannying about, wot 'bout you Chrissy ........................

It is time to be brave and not let names dictate line ups. Wilder came with a preferred formation and effective playing style. He spent the summer drilling it into the players. And then he just scraps it all to make room for Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke. Four times now.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I understand it was tempting to try, but enough is enough.

In my opinion there was little wrong with the original plan, and we only have to hope that the rot hasn't set in too deep, and that we can start improving if Wilder goes back to it.
Bang on!

We are absolutely hopeless. We are going down to the 4th if things don't change. I was defending us the other day but Southend were abysmal. Even when we played better, we never looked like scoring. Very worrying indeed. I don't know where we go from this.

He's played the same starting 11 every game - is he blind or is he seeing something the majority of us aren't? There needs to be something positive, the atmosphere at times tonight was grim at not surprising when so many keep turning out

I'm fed up of merging threads :(
Don't bother even when you've merged nearly all tonight's threads there will still be the stupid twats still posting new threads because they won't realise threads have been merged. You know you can take a horse to water ......

Disgusting, I can't believe me and the lad stayed to watch the second half!, nightmares tonight, I can feel em brewing!!!

On another note.....Ched, 4 in 3. Reality check required.

Everyone of our existing players that have kept their place in the first team has got worse so far this year under Wilder
- Long - last year many said most improved player - this year no comment needed

- Brayford - bad injury granted but looks a shadow of the previous player but looks very unhappy - so many time tonight I looked around when he picked the ball up and zero options showing for him - I think he's pissed off with the playing system and style.

- Basham - plants of effort but very poor technically

- Done - such a waste of a decent player who was scoring for fun - don't think he will have another decent game in this set up.

Sharpe - no cohesion at all up front, not looking anything like a 20 goal striker

At least all the new player look good ????

Fleck has been poor the last 2 games but looked potentially great before

Come on Wilder sort it!

If Wilder doesn't change something and quickly, we'll be in a relegation battle this season. Extremely poor again. It says something that we looked miles better when Coutts came on - at least we managed to string more than 2 passes together. Not one shot on target at home against the team bottom of the league on the back of 7 straight defeats. We have now deteriorated 2 seasons running.

Play 5 at the back at Millwall otherwise we are in for another mauling.

First match of season tonight after being away on holiday.

Didn't know who half the team were and still couldn't distinguish between them after 90 mins as they were equally dreadful.

Only exceptions for me were Clarke who actually tried and Coutts who tried to get some momentum going.

Defending in first half comical, literally unbelievable. How do we manage to get worse with each passing season?

Chesterfield fans are now taking the piss out of us now :-(

I'm sick of the club, saw fans fighting in the South Stand - everything wilder said wouldn't happen has happened.

Face it we are going to get relegated -as me and many others have said Mcabe and the prince should fuck off they offer no direction no backing and the club is poisonous -

I'm sick of watching spineless sets of cunts

Absolutely bang on Bergen.
I was saying exactly the same at full time. We began the season with a 4-2-3-1 formation with quick tempo short passing which created a decent amount of chances. It had the basis of being enjoyable to watch and though we had a few hiccups/off days (Halifax was poor, Derby was good but without too many chances). Wilder stated that he wanted another striker to give us "a different dimension and options". At Handsworth Parramore we went with Clarke as the lone striker (no Billy) and again played good football (better opposition than you would expect)
The minute the season starts we try the same system with both our strikers up front but half an hour in it begins to fall apart and we completely lose our way. Wilder has continued with this system but it doesn't suit the attacking players. With Sharp, Done and Clarke on the pitch we have no real attacking midfield creating the chances. Wilder has to stick his neck out and drop one of Clarke or Sharp and bench the currently ineffective Done. If he hasn't the bollocks then pre season formations and shape will have been an utter waste of time

Can someone in the press specifically put the change of formation question to him again please? When he shrugs it off with a 'we can play several different ways' throwaway please show him the league table.

I specifically want to know why he spent a whole pre-season playing one way, buying players to fit this formation, and then chucked it all away after signing Leon Clarke.

Billy's getting a lot of stick from fans saying he should be dropped, just look back at last year, he started off shite and as his confidence grew he turnt into a class player we know he is!

I don't get why he puts mcnulty on the bench, we aren't scoring goals or even having any shots on target yet he doesn't bring him on.

Duffy has been awful.
When I saw Duffy for Burton I thought he was a very intelligent player and was pleased we signed him. He is when retaining possession and finding runners. He's rubbish if expected to chase and harry and whip crosses in, it's not his game so don't ask him to do it. Like asking Coutts or Tonge to tackle anyone. Football is about finding a blend and we haven't got anything like that at the moment.

I don't know the answer but Basham made his 100th appearance and I can think of a couple of good ones in his preferred centre mid position. Him and fleck just don't work.

I'm at a loss to go in to the rest of the team right now.

:)Anyone got an accurate estimate of how many penalties we should/could have had. I thought four decent shouts. To not get one seemed harsh. Obviously I don't think we should have won 4-3 as we'd have missed two of them:)

How can 11 professional footballers play for 90 minutes and not shoot once?

Beggars belief, were Southend that good?

As a club we are fading slowly and painfully into oblivion and obscurity :(

at 3-0 & gobsmacked & speechless like I haven't been for since Shrewsbury . The whole defence not just long has to take the flack for that horrific opening 15 mins tonight Although the 2nd & 3rd Southend goals did remind me of goals that are scored. When you put on fifa on easiest beginner setting for laugh. But if the 2nd half was the 1st half I wouldn't have been too disappointed

The thing Is we have to stick with him. I feel because if we get rid that will be 9 managers that have left since the opening game of our relegation season (in the same space of time as warnock reign) & we'll be like Chelsea were we are running out of managers to appoint

Second half was bollox and all. Southend just slowed it down, job done. And how much momentum, how much sustained pressure did we put them under? Yes, we played a bit (a bit) more football, but never looked like scoring.

One (can't deal with them all in one post) of the big concerns is that Wilder's gone on and on about the need for strong characters and the right attitude. Given that, the first goal looked part bad positioning from Long and part a wicked deflection. So whatever - you're five minutes in, shit happens. You're looking at the team to get on with it, stay solid, regroup, and there's plenty of time to get back even and push on for more. Instead they totally collapsed and conceded another two extremely poor goals. Game over after fifteen lousy minutes.

Another is that we proceeded to spend the rest of the first half hitting it as long and desperately as we could, and then reshuffled and started the second half moving it about more. No sign of clear tactics and how we intend to play.

As bad as anything I've ever seen at the Lane.

Wilder is clearly a good 2nd division manager and that's where he's taking us. So we'll be well prepared for next season.

McCabe is ultimately responsible for our current demise - tonight was the worst blades' display I have witnessed in 55 years of supporting them. Until he goes I cannot see us reversing this situation. The majority say that isn't going to happen. I believe we have to think of a way - mass protests; crowd funding buy out?

I think we deserve and need to hear from McCabe and the board, what is their answer to our dire circumstances.

All well and good and would agree with you normally but Wilder has to decide. Is playing Sharp AND Clarke more important than the system because one things for sure. It isn't working and looks knowhere near being a success at the moment.
