Does anyone remember the Blades playing a friendly against Latvia at Bramall Lane during the middle of the season? If I remember correctly we lost the game, but I can't remember why we ended up playing the Latvian national side. Also, did any Premier League players play for Latvia, I think Marian Pahars was playing for Latvia around that time.
A friend whose parents left Latvia after the second world war offered his services as translator/interpreter for the Latvian team and officials. He tells me that he provided the Latvian translation on the programme cover. He also supplied me with the teams but Sharrowblade beat me to it!
It seems Latvia were part of the Soviet Union team until 1992, and with the Latvians being a relatively new team, their FA were keen to arrange friendlies against English and Scottish teams - this is where the Neil Warnock /Gary Johnson friendship came in. It was also part of the era where United were keen to have links with foreign clubs and they possibly hoped to find some suitable Latvian recruits.
Jiorgio was rewarded with a seat in the Directors box and dined with United and Latvian Officials at a post match meal in the Platinum Suite with all the Players
