Pre-covid the squad players played in behind closed doors games against other local teams. But with covid restrictions that probably isn't the case currently
Think this is one of the (many) reasons we've dropped off dramatically...not being able to have the same level of conditioning/preparation than before. Wilder did mention it in an interview. He also referenced not being able to train in the same way than before.

Wednesday would have had more. Had the Internet been Invented the last time they were decent.
Speaking of which I hope the club do the same for the derby on Friday with the form united are in that could make for very pleasant viewing.

Great didnt realise they played the Owls 2pm Friday its my day off so I think that might be worth watching on the big screen TV, thanks.

Sheffield United top of the table, Sheffield Wednesday at the bottom bring on a tanking !

If the club do the same. I hope they do it’s certainly been well watched and received today and we can all do with some feel good stuff from united.

Ndiaye looks a player to me.
Needs to be built up a bit physically but he plays with his head up, nice touch & can pick a pass. Moves well with the ball. Give him 12 months and I think we'll have a No 10 in our midst.
UTB

Just watched the whole match, thoroughly impressed with the whole team play.
I can see why they promoted Heckingbottom to stand in manager, the energy & movement was great
Brunt , Brookes & Ndyai were the standouts , and the Moose must have benefitted with those 75 minutes, showing some good touches & speed

Really enjoyed that

Didn't even realise Coughlan was at the club

Maybe Wilders greatest legacy will be these players coming through the academy.
He said he hoped to leave a legacy ie :
New training complex and a successful team.We are still in a far better place than when he arrived and if a number of these lads come through ( not guaranteed) that would be great.
Followed our youth set up since I was a youth and the talent amongst these u18's& u23's is the best I can recall, some real quality in there.
And i'me going all the way back to Woody ,Badg, Mick Jones.

The game on Friday, v SWFC, is an away game (?isn't it?). So any broadcast or otherwise will be via S6TV, and not SUTV.

Let's hope we can keep hold of all these promising youngsters from the U23's, U18's and even U17's to find out if they can either make the grade or fall away. Don't want to be selling them for a pittance to clubs like Chelsea., especially now a handful will be showing their skills on the international stage. At least we don't have McCabe with his, ' When the big clubs come calling' phrase.

I believe so it’s odd reciprocal deals aren’t worked out to show games like the Derby’s though in all likelihood it won’t be broadcast

Me neither, ex Pig like Hecky isn't he? Maybe Hecky got on the blower and offered him something temporary. We could really shithouse the pigs and get Bullen in too, those cones won't put themselves out

Del Boy too.

Mark Smith and Scott Sellars. Might be more.

We like 'em at the Academy with Pig connections.

Going back to my previous post !The late fifties early sixties was a golden era for us Archie Clarke who wont be remembered by many on here was the architect.
We had a team which was almost entirely of home grown players and were a top division club. He died suddenly and the youth plan died with him as we have never reached the heights of those days .
We have brought a fair number of top quality through but never in the numbers we did then,Having said that teams in general were more a localised product. ..Transfers though were a vibrant part of the game as they always have been and that will continue.
Have we a golden era coming again ?
Would be great for the club and Wilder as he wanted to leave a legacy ! time will tell.

Depends how much you can attribute the academy prospects' development to Wilder. Many will have been at the club since they were 8, way before he arrived and I suspect he won't have really known an awful lot about many of them until very recently.

I think the likes of Lester, Binnion and Nick Cox before him deserve the credit.

It’s unlikely we have that level of golden generation in the making. We’ve had some great youth sides even in recent years which have only produced one or two senior players. The FA youth cup semi final group only really produced Maguire and long who’ve played consistently at league one or above with an honourable mention for mcfadzean. You could argue terry Kennedy could’ve done so if his knees weren’t made of biscuit and the de girolamo who was knocking around the 18s at the time could’ve been anything he wanted pre injury. But even if they’d all maxed out their potential that still wouldn’t be a golden generation and that’s the best united youth side for a while.

Moose with two assist's and and two misses, good game time for him.............there could have been more misses in the rest of the match which was'nt shown...just for clarity.

Since the (losing) U18 & U21 Professional Development League National Finals in 2016, senior Academy Staff appointments have sort of followed a plan. In that, they've been considered, deliberate appointments. Rather than rushed eeny meeny mo appointments. I can't say I know what the plan was/is, but I can see they were considered appointments. Nick Cox was a big loss, headhunted by Manchester United. Maybe those shoes were big to fill, and maybe Binnion was more of a hands on coach when he was punched up to the head role. But, I could see there was an argument for continuity. Everybody moved up a rung - Binnion, Dungworth, Wadsworth. That played out for a few years. Then, it seemed Wilder wanted changes. Those three were culled overnight & Lester was brought in to the head role. Again, that seemed a considered choice. And, he had slowly built up his own team (not sure what happened for Andrew Hughes stint to be short), notably bringing Heckingbottom in. Derek Geary provided continuity at U18 throughout.
Obviously, yesterday's appointments couldn't be quite as deliberate and considered. With Heckingbottom having to rush to the first team, Coughlan & Currie had to be grabbed from the phone book sharpish. It would be unfortunate if Wilder's hissy fit leads to instability in the Academy structure.
Any "credit" belongs across the range of those protagonists over a number of years. But, I do feel strongly that Academies are successful when you have elements of stability & continuity (like we have had). And a plan. The plan has to be better than "get players into the first team". That's the objective, the what. The plan needs to be the how.

Aren't Coughlan and Currie on short term deals to the end of the season, same as Heckingbottom, Tindall and Matt Duke* with the first team? That seems eminently sensible; everyone takes stock at the end of the year and the management can get round pegs in round holes in terms of getting the coaching/management structure right at both academy and first team level.

*someone has been having fun with Matt Duke's Wikipedia - he's apparently a GBE and GVCO. Which he's not.

Agreed. Although, there will inevitably be an element of "drift" towards caretaker incumbents. I'm very surprised that Lester himself didn't just step to the U23 cone putting out & dugout pacing on a temporary basis

Ball_Sup (Phil)

Obviously seen a few in and around the first team, but any idea who of this crop is seen as most promising? And are any close to first team or football league loans next year?

A lot of good noises been made about a few, feels more so than last couple of years? Is this right or way off the mark / social media hype?

Things move quickly in Academy football, and I haven't seen any of them live for a year. So I don't feel comfortable commenting too much. Also, when I watch Academy games, I'm there to enjoy the games in the moment. Not to guess what might happen two years down the line. I'm good at saying who is playing consistently well at their level. But, I'm hopeless at "potential". Norrington-Davies, Belehouan, Slater, Broadbent, Smith are all already on loan. (Along with Eastwood, Verrips, Coulibaly & Freeman). Hackford & Ndiaye have been jacked into first team appearances. Gordon & Brunt have been in first team squads. So, the pecking order is there for all to see.

You ask who is "seen as most promising". I'm not picking hairs, but that sounds a bit like "who the staff see as most promising". Of course, I don't know that. But I'm happier naming "who I myself see as most promising". Of those not already on loan, I always say, simply, I like Dewhurst, Boyes & Neal. Dewhurst & Boyes have already had loan spells.

You make an excellent point about noise & hype. There is very good news. We have superb social media coverage of Academy games. With highlights clips. And the occasional live stream. But. The bad news is ... people see a 28 second clip of a player scoring a great goal ... and there is an inevitable "get him in could do a job" buzz. I'm not criticising that. It's just an honest view.

For example, none of this current crop have come anywhere close to the numbers & quality Tyler Smith had in his 22 goal 2017/18 U23 season. Which was not as well covered on Twitter & YouTube.
