Since the (losing) U18 & U21 Professional Development League National Finals in 2016, senior Academy Staff appointments have sort of followed a plan. In that, they've been considered, deliberate appointments. Rather than rushed eeny meeny mo appointments. I can't say I know what the plan was/is, but I can see they were considered appointments. Nick Cox was a big loss, headhunted by Manchester United. Maybe those shoes were big to fill, and maybe Binnion was more of a hands on coach when he was punched up to the head role. But, I could see there was an argument for continuity. Everybody moved up a rung - Binnion, Dungworth, Wadsworth. That played out for a few years. Then, it seemed Wilder wanted changes. Those three were culled overnight & Lester was brought in to the head role. Again, that seemed a considered choice. And, he had slowly built up his own team (not sure what happened for Andrew Hughes stint to be short), notably bringing Heckingbottom in. Derek Geary provided continuity at U18 throughout.
Obviously, yesterday's appointments couldn't be quite as deliberate and considered. With Heckingbottom having to rush to the first team, Coughlan & Currie had to be grabbed from the phone book sharpish. It would be unfortunate if Wilder's hissy fit leads to instability in the Academy structure.
Any "credit" belongs across the range of those protagonists over a number of years. But, I do feel strongly that Academies are successful when you have elements of stability & continuity (like we have had). And a plan. The plan has to be better than "get players into the first team". That's the objective, the what. The plan needs to be the how.
