we've re-signed Paul Gerrard as backup keeper cover, after he was released at the end of last season.

United have re-signed experienced goalkeeper Paul Gerrard to provide back-up to shot-stoppers Paddy Kenny and Ian Bennett.

Gerrard - released by the previous playing management at the end of last season - has signed a 12-month deal to become a part of Bryan Robson's squad.

The veteran, 33, linked up with United for their Barclays Premiership campaign as a free agent in September 2006 after his release by Nottingham Forest that summer. He signed a short-term contract before he later penned a deal until the end of the season.

Beginning his career as a trainee at Oldham Athletic, Gerrard secured a £1 million move to Everton in July 1996, and later enjoyed a four-month loan spell at Bramall Lane in 2003.

Gerrard, who will provide valuable cover for Robson in the goalkeeping department, made two Premier League starts and one Cup start for the Blades last term.

I can't see what would be wrong in having young Jamie Annerson as the 3rd keeper. He's a good keeper!

1 of 2 players in the United squad that got picked over me :cry2:

Cant see why we have done this.

Agreed.

If we are looking to bring in a keeper we could do with one that will challenge Kenny. Rather than signing another back up keeper that will probably not see the 1st team.

Cant see why we have done this.

Looks like it's because of work permit problems, although I'd have took a chance on Annerson.

From the Yorkshire Post.........

Former Everton goalkeeper Paul Gerrard has landed a new one-year deal with the Blades after originally being told he was surplus to requirements.

The move follows the collapse of a proposed swoop for Trinidadian international Jan Williams due to problems obtaining his work permit.

Gerrard, 34, will again provide cover for first-choice Paddy Kenny and reserve team goalkeeper Ian Bennett.

All explained by Robbo on the OS..............

Blades boss Bryan Robson says that goalkeeper Paul Gerrard's experience is an important added ingredient to his Bramall Lane squad.

Gerrard, who was released by the previous management at the end of last season, was re-signed by the Blades on a 12-month contract this week.

The goalkeeper, who signs on for his third stint at the Lane, will provide back-up to Paddy Kenny and Ian Bennett.

Robson said: "Paul gives us good experience and he has been at the Club before, which means he knows the players and the set-up."

The Gaffer said that the capture of a third goalkeeper was to ensure that United do not get caught short during a potentially hectic campaign.

"We had a slight scare in Ireland with Paddy and that emphasised the fact that we were short of cover in that department, although Ian Bennett has done very well in pre-season."

Academy prospect Jamie Annerson also enters the picture, but Robson feels that the youngster must enhance his development out on loan.

Robson added: "Jamie is a great prospect, but we feel he will develop better by getting first-team experience out on loan - that's one of the reasons we have brought Paul Gerrard back."

That's pretty much what I expected to happen. Hope Jamie has a succesful loan season with no injuries - he could be an amazing prospect
