I was feeling nostalgic and dug up this fossil from YouTube... Division 3, Wolves v Blades 9th May 1989. It ended 2-2 and that point was enough for us to clinch promotion to Division 2 on goal difference (over Port Vale?) - see the Blades players celebrate when the ref blows for full time. Wolves were celebrating too as they won the division. Packed away end, inflatable swords, great atmosphere, great memories!

I remember John Moore not joining in the celebrations with the Blades players, the subs and the the backroom staff. He walked straight to the players tunnel after shaking hands with the Wolves players after the final whistle.

After the game we were three points ahead of Port Vale and our goal difference were greater than them by 12 goals so we were virtually up. To be on the safe side, Dave Bassett decided that one of the two subs for the last game of the season at Bristol City would be Graham Benstead. Was Benstead the first ever sub keeper in the league? We lost 2-0 and Port Vale won 2-1 at Fulham so we were promoted on Goal Difference with 9 goals better than Port Vale's

That was the first ever away game I took Mrs BB to.We had got married shortly before that. I can remember the journey down in a clapped out old Austin allegro.
To this day it's still one of our greatest memories.( not the car)

This was one of the first United games that I remember listening to live on the radio. I don't think that Radio Sheffield did live coverage back then (they just had Bob Jackson in the studio and would periodically go out to the grounds to get the latest news), but they must have decided to make a special case for this game. Very good memories, and what team spirit that squad had!

Near the end of the game, the ball went out for a throw. The ref. whistled and Martin Pike, thinking it was the final whistle, took his boots off and threw them into the crowd! He played the last couple of minutes barefoot! I also remember unbelievable brutality by West Midlands 'Police' against the United fans.

I went to that game,I remember Steve Bull blazing 1 miles over the bar and Blades fans singing,"Bull shit" to him and the coppers pulling fans out.

I have seen the video a few times but not that one. Its funny how it's from a Wolves perspective and all you can hear at the end of it is "we love United we do"! I've seen us play Wolves many times down the years and sung "Bull Shit" to Steve Bull on a regular basis, only for that annoying sod to score and shh the crowd! I started supporting United in the season after (aged 9) so at least I remember 1989 - 1990!

Went to this game, 1st of many trip to Wolves and the 1st away game I went to without my dad, went with a kid from school and his uncle. I was in the middle of my GCSE's and had an exam the following morning.

Funny lop sided ground then too, with the main stand being miles from the pitch and only the stand and kop open. I can remember walking down the back of some back to back houses and getting bricks thrown at us over a fence.

No idea how I got on in the exam!

never been in such a weird ground situation , on a split kop with the roof removed , 2 stands closed
when we went 2=1 up we were going up as champions for about 10 minutes
but it was the only time I can remember both sides going barmy at the end of a game

I want to know how no one died? There were people stood up and everything. Disgraceful. Standing Cock!

I dont remember many saying , will we be good enough to stay up in the second division ie championship back then
and within 12 months we were at it again

I would have kept the Allegro bit to yourself BB, sometimes people dont need to know ones dark secrets ! :D

I listened to it on the wireless at home, and was allowed to stay up late to specifically listen to it.

However I did find myself in a bit of bother, as I was 11 years old, over excitable and had a brainwave and decided to make some fizzy water in the soda stream to spray round the back garden pretending it was champagne, and then to celebrate the special occasion I decided it needed extra fizz so kept my finger on the carbonate button, which had disastrous consequences as it blew the bottle up and permanently buggered up the soda stream.

I remember the following season, Deano spearheading our attack as we won promotion to the top flight and Steve Bull went to the World Cup ?!?!?

Very good campaign, thankfully a season only in the third tier too (what 11/12 should have been). Always think of 88/89 as a bit of a forgotten promotion season as it got overshadowed by the following year, there wasn't even a promotion book about it.

Back then at least the Blades grasped promotion opportunities when they arrived - 82, 84, 89 & 90. Since then we've been f***ing awful when chances have cropped up 95, 97, 98, 99, 03, 04, 05, 09, 10, 12, 13, 15, Colin even almost f***ed it up for us in 06.

Bully good striker, but Deano better!
