I haven't a clue, but I'm going to have a guess to see how many out of eleven I get (probably none!)
Andy Leaning, Martin Pike, Paul Stancliffe, Jeff Eckhardt, Brian Smith, Martin Kuhl, Chris Marsden, Colin Morris, Richard Cadette, Mel Eves, Peter Beagrie.

Six out of eleven will do me! I took Peter Withe out of the line up at the last moment as well.

Burridge
Barnsley
Eckhardt
Stancliffe
Pike
Arnott
Dempsey
Frain
Kuhl
Morris
Withe.

Not sure on the subs but noone came on?

Won 2-1. Withe, Dempsey. Crowd, 28,004
We spoilt pompey party that day ( just promoted. ) can colchester do a job on Barnsley next Saturday and maybe let us in ?

Sub could have been Mendonca as he'd been sub the previous 2 games.

As it was Portsmouth of that era did all 22 men make it to the end of the game?

Mark Dempsey, scored a rare goal vs Portsmouth. Last year assistant to Solskjaer at Molde, this year managing Haugesund. He's had a better career at management than as a player, starting out at the Man Utd academy. He even played one game under Ferguson, 63 app for us.

He was one of a growing number of midfield players to pull on the red and white shirt, who seemed to be physically lacking to be truly effective.

We stopped Pompey winning the title: Derby pipped them.

Brief highlights of this game are on youtube I think.

Dempsey scored some decent goals for us: he scored a great free kick that season against Reading when we chucked the 3-0 lead away, and I think he got another against Blackburn, and his winner in the Cup against Maidstone the season after was a good shot from the edge of the box.

And a well taken goal against Bristol City in the League Cup in October 1986. Attacking the Kop End he received the ball just outside the box, beat a defender challenging him and blasted a dipping shot past Keith Waugh

Random fact, but that was actually the last season with only one sub.

And for the next quiz question, who were our first two 2 subs in the first season of 2 subs?

Philliskirk and Wilder at Plymouth.

I didn't mean the first two to play, I meant the first 2 named subs - v Bournemouth on 15/8/87.

Philliskirk and Eckhardt.

And which future PL manager came on for Bournemouth in the same game?

Philliskirk and Marsden and I don't know, though I do randomly remember that a guy called Brooks got Bournemouth's winner about 5 mins from the end.

Tony Pulis. Shaun Brooks scored the winner. It was Bournemouths first ever game at that level.

Leaning saved a pen on his debut as well. Have any other goalies done that*

* Tomlinson save one on his league debut in 83, but he had played in the cup at Wrexham the week before.

Mervyn Day in his only appearance.

Huddersfield missed one on Simon Tracey's league debut, but he didn't save it. Craig Maskell put it wide. Tracey had played a Sherpa Van Trophy game before that I think.

Oh yes - I saw both Day's and Leaning's saves.

Aidan Davison had the opportunity to save a penalty with his first ever touch after Tracey was sent off at Man City in Aug 99. He failed.

Tracey did indeed debut at Wrexham in the SVT on 5/12/88, but I don't count that.

I have a vivid memory of Bournemouth scoring during a tannoy announcement in that match, and my innocent 9 yr old self thinking it was a bit unfair as our 'keeper would have been distracted by the noise!

That Pompey away day was quite memorable. Losing one-nowt at half time and Derby losing away meant Pompey were going up as champions. I'm happy we pissed in their pockets. When we came out in the second half it was as though Pompey had been getting bladdered in the dressing room already and we just put the pressure on them ... and they conceded quite easily.

The footage below ... about ten minutes from the end the south terrace emptied onto the sidelines and you can see coppers on the pitch with dogs and a musher actually pass the ball back to a Pompey player before it had left the field of play. To be honest, the ref should have stopped play and took the players off. You could see Uniteds players not being too happy with twenty seven thousand mushers anxious to get on the pitch. Burridge was in goal that day, BTW.

When their lot got to us there were about five or six cans and bottles which came whizzing over the fence at us. I was stood up at the back on the right. When the ref stopped the game the Blades fans stayed behind but some left, me amongst them as I knew my way home (I lived in Eastney at that time, about a mile away from the ground) It wasn't a pleasant day, but a satisfactory victory over a pretty shit Pompey side. We were not really any better BTH.

Philiskirk scored at Fratton in that FA Cup replay a few years later - Harry Bassett's first game as United manager. I was stood on the Fratton End that night. Big mistake.

I think it was Richard Cadette's first game for us, when we all realised that he was crap!

Sorry to be a pain, but would the shirts of the players Deadbat names be numbered 1 to 11 as in his list?
