I agree with Wizardry here, if we don't sell out (and we were about 6k under selling out v Derby), then the club should be more flexible about selling seats in the upper tier to away fans. We could be chucking away the chance of another £1m in gate receipts. Obviously in all this the pigs only get the lower tier :)

You've also got to ask yourself how many tickets the away side were confident of selling and how many at once they would commit to.

They may not have been as confident of selling as many as some Blades predict they would have.

We should have given away fans the top tier and corner and put home fans in the bottom tier. Maybe revert it against Wednesday. Bit silly imo to sell season tickets up there.

Lower lane end stand view is shit, so why would you put our lot there when the upper is one of the best stands in the ground? Fuck the away fans and their needs, it's about what's best for us. Plus if the SYP were fit for purpose, there'd be a line of stewards like at Man City, Celtic, rangers, Derby? But they're not fit for purpose, hence why a quarter of the ground is a no go area.

Wouldn't exactly say I'm putting away fans needs 1st, just think we have a the ability to generate extra funds.

The reduction in volume from away fans has been noticeable since they moved from BLUT. Only a small number at the back of BLUT could sound louder than a full BLLT. As a result the hostile atmosphere at BDBL has improved hugely and may well have affected some results.

The fact that the volume from away fans is now lower in the SS also means that the Kop can be heard more and the SS is joining in more and more.

Our 12th man putting in a good performance is far more important than half a million quid max a season.

The Magic is Back

Before a ball had been kicked this topic was being discussed and as I remember it the majority wanted what we have got, away fans in the lower tier, the argument about not allowing seats because of segregation issues is still valid, however the talk about saying fuck em, why? Only in football I suppose, love the hostile atmosphere of the lane but come on, fir me a talk to away fans before a game is good, lower tier? Ideal, the argument about more money is a fair one, but me, personally no,, keep playing the way we are and more of our fans will come.

If we had a stadium of 30,000 and averaged 11,000 then I would understand this point, but we don't. It's about what is right for the club. At the moment it is obvious that SYP have too much of a say on capacity, with a block of seats in the corner, the first two rows of BLUT, and areas of JS and SS netted off. If we had away fans in the upper tier it is likely that policing costs would spiral, and therefore any potential profit from more away fans would be minimal, at the cost of pissing off ST holders in the BLUT and also limiting tickets to home fans in all areas of the stadium.

Don't forget that it is still holiday season. Expect the amount the of blades at games to increase once September begins.

Ahh South Yorkshire Police - that paragon of honesty, integrity and competence from top to bottom !!
-Just a few exceptions like Hillsborough, Orgreave, Rotherham sex scandal, Helicopter perverts etc

Make the BLUT a season ticket area for me. I like to see us in all 4 sides of the ground.
Imagine the atmosphere against the pigs if were winning with the noise coming at them from everwhere?

It would also be great if we ever reach the prem again

Fuck em. Who in this league are going to give us 5.5k away tickets? The piggies are only giving us 2.7k in a bigger ground.
BDTBL is a wonderful place with blades on all for sides. I don't give a monkey's about away fans. I go to the lane to watch the better teams not the "better" fans.
I agree to a degree but my point about the fans was just that, a point. The main thing I'm getting at is the money aspect and like I say if it doesn't affect us in anyway then fine, crack on.

Let's get one thing straight though and this isn't directed at you but after reading some posts on this thread I'd just like to point out that it's the players who will always win, draw or lose a game of football, not the fans.

Whilst we're turning money away from the turnstiles and those that are arguing against it, let's hope the same people don't complain when we don't go that extra couple of hundred grand and get a player in who we really want, it could make all the difference!

Good crowd but we've done ourselves out of a shitload of money and it being even bigger by not giving Derby more tickets.

You are of course correct Wiz about finance - but the noise, or lack of it from Derby and Barnsley was useless and was hardly heard in the middle of South Stand. Away support now is pretty poor, so does it inadvertently help us? Does anyone know the agreement we now have with the SAG? What we need to do is maximise seats on Bramall Lane lower which would gives us income from another 600/700 seats there from the opposition.

The other issue is quality seats and view for United fans. South Stand is full most games and John Street needs children to gain access. The KOP as mentioned many times is useless for anyone over 6 foot tall as there simply isn't enough leg room (remember MK Dons away? - quality room everywhere).

The club has a problem - a kop extension is stupid unless the club provides binoculars for viewing at the proposed back of stand - we just don't have enough quality seats for our fans.

UTB

To say our average attendance has only dipped to around 18k in recent history is really impressive.
Also with the Sky/ BT tv deals its good to see fans still wanted to come down to the lane. TV deals with Sky/ BT are only a bad thing for football, if it takes fans away from watching their local teams.

I find it bemusing that some of our own supporters would prefer we give up some of the best seats in the ground to away fans. United have got this spot on for me this season, give the away fans the worst seats in the ground (lower tier), that are naturally separated from the home support, and giving our own supporters a chance to get a great view of the game in the upper tier.

I'm not sure there would even be much financial gain should it be available to away supporters anyway (extra policing would be needed), all it's doing is giving the opposition more of an advantage by giving them more support! The atmosphere at that end of the ground has been great in terms of vocal support for united this season...let's not rock the boat!

Well done United for giving the BLUT to home supporters.

Agree lets keep BLUT for home fans. If you are a non season ticket holder and want to buy 2 or 3 tickets together you had the choice of very edges of South Stand or obstructed view on the Kop. Now United fans who want to attend can buy decent seats with a decent view. Nice to see the club looking after their own even if it costs financially for a few games a season. Tell me another club who allocate arguably the best view in the ground to visiting supporters.

I suppose the only variable realistic option is to give away fans a max of 1,500 tickets in the JS end of the upper tier like we did for our 1st PL home match against Liverpool. At that match there was netting over 800 seats to create a no mans land and we had 700 seats in the upper tier adjoining the Westfield corner stand.

I remember when the Westfield Corner was built and McCabe was highlighting the big advantage that we can now be flexible regards allocations in the upper tier for away fans because we can close off (easily segregate) different areas in the BLUT concourse areas.

Wonder why this isn't happening, if away teams sell out the bottom tier then just give away fans a small part of the BLUT end nearest the JS stand. Can only think extra policing costs don't make it worth while, however surely stewards would suffice in the BLUT?

I've said it times many. Give the supporters a team and manager that they can relate to and that play with heart..... and the supporters will fill the stands.

Even if this team slumps to a mid table finish the supporters will keep coming because they play with pride and try to entertain.

The Blades will accept not winning every time out provided they're getting that.

What we need to do is maximise the number of seats available to away fans on the BLLT against Derby 7-800 were not in use WHY?
A great point already posted by others is that as we are the south stand is virtually all ST holders, John St not available without taking a child which leaves very few good quality seats available on the kop for non ST holders to buy on the day, for a big game all that is left will be restricted view seats. Having the BLUT available for home support is a godsend to some. Then there is the factor of the matchday atmosphere to take into account on Saturday from my seat in the centre of the kop I only heard the Derby fans twice this has to help the players.
I am another one who thinks the attendances will increase in the next few weeks when people return from holidays and when the students return to Sheffield. I have noticed in the past how the last few thousand seats are always the hardest to shift at the lane due to restricted views this will not change until the kop is redeveloped, we have to keep the BLUT for home fans we cannot afford no to, home fans spend a lifetime at the lane away fans only visit.

No need to be bemused, I'm only saying give it to them when the early indications are that we are no where near going to sell out and only when an away team sell out in less than a couple of days.

At the end of the day you and many others have debated why we shouldn't give away fans the BLUT and they are well reasoned points as long as we don't regret it financially.

As far as I know we don't pay hardly anything if anything at all to policing inside the stadium as has been discussed on here before so that's a mute point. The stewards deal with everything during the game although I'm sure that if anything kicks off there is an option to use the Police if needed.

Imagine the atmosphere against the pigs if were winning with the noise coming at them from everwhere.
I remember when we were winning the pigs 3-0 at half time, I was in the Westfield corner looking down at them.

The atmosphere was deafening and I remember looking at their shell shocked piggy like features and thinking "fooking 'ell they don't know what's hit 'em"

Don't care what anybody says, on its day Bramall Lane is one of the most intimidating, never to be forgotten experiences in the country.

anyone know the situation with the last couple of blocks on John Street towards the away end? The ticket office website has this marked as "unavailable" but it wasn't sold out Saturday and I cant believe is already sold out for Norwich. My Dad is 85 so struggles with Kop and BLUT, and South stand is virtually sold out to season tickets.

I had that problem for Leicester as I wanted to sit with my dad. Asked ticket office they said it was family enclosure so can't buy online.

To be honest the "family"stand shouldn't always mean "with kids." Whether it be an elderly parent or just taking the wife these should also be classed as "family too."

Let the men in suits worry about the "loss in revenue."
Just sit back and enjoy the wonderful football from the wonderful Blades in the wonderful Bramall lane upper tier.

Absolutely. Just on the acoustics alone the BLUT is too good to give to away supporters, we need to make every advantage count. We have a fortress/winning mentality now.

Agree. Occasionally I move on there and sit with my dad, and never have a problem phoning and moving to there. Nor any problem with turnstiles/stewards.
