I've actually thought for some time that there could be mileage in SUFC expanding the portfolio into other sports. It's very common in Spain, Barça and Real both have basketball, handball, hockey and other teams. The Steelers and Sharks are both very successful but neither pull in the crowds of old. The Eagles, despite pulling off arguably the greatest achievement the city has ever seen, have never had big crowds. Would alienate those of a blue and (pinstripe) white persuasion I suppose which makes it a non starter
I seem to remember that Newcastle United, under the stewardship of Sir John Hall, tried it but soon gave it up as a failure!I've actually thought for some time that there could be mileage in SUFC expanding the portfolio into other sports. I stand corrected: Sir John Hall pulled the plug on a 'Sporting club' (ala Barcelona) when the council 'blocked' a super stadium development plan in Leazes Park!I seem to remember that Newcastle United, under the stewardship of Sir John Hall, tried it but soon gave it up as a failure!
