Blades appeal to Owls fans

Wednesday fans were today urged to join Sheffield United's battle to overturn their Premiership relegation.
As a delegation from Bramall Lane prepares to take their protest to the Houses of Parliament, where nearly 50 MPs have signed an early-day motion calling for Bryan Robson's side to be reinstated in the Premier League, United have unveiled details of a city-centre rally designed to coincide with tomorrow's visit to Westminster.

And Sheffield United fans leader Richard Batho wants to see Owls supporters join them in a rare show of unity.

Tomorrow's event, which is scheduled to start around 1pm at Barkers Pool, will enable those fans not travelling to London to protest loudly but peacefully against the FAPL's failure to deduct West Ham points for a serious breach of transfer regulations during the 'Carlos Tevez Affair' - a decision which United argue cost them their top-flight place.

An independent arbitration panel is scheduled to begin investigating the matter next week and ,as the media spotlight once again prepares to focus on a matter which threatens to plunge English football into chaos, United know that a big turnout would place even more pressure on the FAPL.

Batho, spokesman for influential fans group BIFA, says the issue bridges the region's partisan divides.

"Hopefully fans from both clubs - United and Wednesday - will turn out because this has the power to affect everyone," he said. "The more people who turn out, the better. We need to get across the message that football fans in general aren't prepared to stand by when something like this happens.

"United supporters must attend in numbers but it would be great to think that everyone from the region, whether they follow us, Wednesday, Roth-erham, Barnsley, Doncaster or Chesterfield, will also lend us their backing. It really is that important."

Earlier this month The Star delivered a dossier of complaints from readers to the FAPL. Despite their refusal to accept the material in person, a Blades supporter has received confirmation that FAPL chief executive Richard Scudamore has taken possession of it.

That is embarrasing and now we do look desperate.

Whats embarrasing about the club trying to take a stance on fairness in football and making a show of solidarity?

It looks desperate and if Wednesday fans want to show solidarity they will do without being asked to.

Why would the pigs show up they dont want us in the prem they want their derby.

Given that its a Blades organised event with only (until now) blades being "invited" I doubt they would.

It has nothing to do with whether or not they want a derby or us in the Premiership, it is for fairness in football. If this sort of thing is allowed to carry on, next time it could be Wednesday/any other team that loses out.

I doubt it havnt they just changed the rule's coz of it all now.

who is the bloke from bifa ? i thought that lot of self publicists had crawled under their stones when reg brearley resigned .

Oh my god, this is cringe worthy, Im sorry Foxy but it is seriously embarrasing.

Its almost as bad as asking fans to 'protest' outside the town hall at 1.pm in the afternoon, I predict at most 20 people sitting on the steps on the hall wondering what the hell to do.

You really are missing the point. It isn't a protest, its a show of solidarity/publicity stunt. Its an opportunity for fans/people to publicly and peacefully show their support for the blades campaign for fairness in football.

What do you think would have the biggest effect? the blades informing the world that genuine fans of football on message boards/radio phone-ins/writing to the press are unhappy OR video images of Sean Bean & 100 blades reading a statement infront of parliament and video of however many sheffield people stood outside the city hall showing their support for the campaign?

Out of interest did you attend the "embarrasing" open top bus ride for finishing 2nd?

There's nothing at all embarrassing asking other teams from the region. I'm sure others would do the same. Overlook the fact that there are 'rivalries' between teams for once...

It is embarrasing when its our city rivals!

If this was the other way round we would be pissing ourselves with laughter, why would they help us???

Ok, it isnt a protest. What difference is it going to make? Why would the PL in london take one little bit of notice of a few blades fans shouting random stuff outside the sheffield city hall?

I wouldn't be pissing myself with laughter, but I wouldn't be marching in protest. I'd be hoping that something was sorted out to prevent it happening again, though.

If this was the other way round we would be pissing ourselves with laughter, why would they help us???

I wouldn't, the principle would still be the same. Fair enough I probably wouldn't have the day off work to attend, but i'd certainly support their cause.

To be honest I don't really care if we end up in the Championship.

What is more concerning is teams such as Rotherham and Boston get the punishment that other clubs don't.

I think that is worth standing up for.

That is why we should carry on.

If you lot don't fair enough!

TBH i think its silly with the group meeting.

let the lawyers do the work and promote fairness with a good outcome from the abirtration.

As you can see the support is really flooding in from wednesday fans.

What the hell is Rob Creasy of Scunthorpe prattling on about?!

"A nice idea maybe but let's just consider injustices to befall Sheffield Wednesday and wonder where the Utd support was then. When Wednesday were relegated in 1990 financial irregularities meant that Swindon were refused promotion from Div 2.

As the third from bottom team Wednesday expected to remain in Div 1 but it was not to be as wednesday were relegated. Wednesday won the League Cup in 1991 yet for one year only the winner did not enter the Cup-winners Cup in the following season. In 1993 Wednesday challenged for both the FA Cup and the League Cup but it was decided that should one team win both then only one representative would enter the Cup winners cup. "

What a pillock. I must've missed the point where Wednesday made a big protest about these "injustices" and asked for support in their cause. Where was United's support?! Support to what exactly??

Yeah i did wonder what he was going on about. lol

I'm a Wednesday fan and I think anyone who calls themselves a true fan will really feel for whats happended to united. I'm on the owlstalk board quite regularly and barring your usual stupid prats there is considerable sympathy towards uniteds cause. Its not about rivalries its about what is the right thing to do.

I did have a read yesterday. I think one quote was regarding purely laughing at the "idiots born out of wedlock" (supposedly us)...

Ooook :)

There were some fans who agreed with the principle that the matter was wrong, but didn't want to join in because it would benefit United.

How petty :)

I can't understand how you lot could stomach this. I'd much rather get relegated that appeal to Sp*rs or Millw*nk to help West Ham out.

Surely you all feel the same?

To be honest, I think the rivalries are slightly different in two city clubs as opposed to places like London. Family members are either Blades or Owls. Workmates are either Blades or Owls. School mates support one or other of the clubs... for Blades, there is no escaping Wednesday fans and for Owls, the same rings true. There's no choice of three or more clubs - it's Bramall Lane or Hillsborough.

Therefore, for the most part, there is no real hatred between the two sets of fans. Some people obviously take it too far but mostly, it's playful banter. The Wednesday lads at work are perfectly capable of having a reasonable discussion about how they see our situation and they are sympathetic. We all agree that we probably aren't going to be reinstated, but the Wednesday fans think we'll get some money out of it. They can see where we're coming from.

Plus we have a common enemy we both really do hate - Leeds United :D

its not about rivalry... its about fairness in football and to stop rule breaking. United wanted support to put it forward that nothing like this happenes again to any team.
