Bits and Pieces for this Summer

In his defence the amount of runs he made just to watch a midfielder take a touch realise the moment had gone and turn and play a safe pass was beyond comprehension

Hopefully that shit has stopped now with vertical football ,although I did see it creeping in a bit pre season when we were pressed

cannon will suprise a lot of doubters this season 😉

I thought Cannon had a bit of a rough gig last season. Dropped into a team that was becoming more and more edgy in their play with the pressure on, and overly defensive. We hardly created anything and he was starved of the ball in dangerous areas. If you watched his game carefully you would see that he made many runs and spaces for himself that needed the ball to be played into, but he just wasnt getting the ball. Invariably, he stopped making those runs and why should he still do them if no git is passing to him at the right times. Starved of service and we had no width to provide crosses to him. The problem was the service not the centre forward. Of course he wasnt perfect (hes just come into a new club and is only a pup) but you had the usual numpties who just saw the fee of £10m, saw he wasnt scoring or even starting, and started the usual wailing about him being a waste of money.

I like him and think there is a decent player there, he just wasnt suited to Wilder's tactics. He might just be the biggest beneficiary of the managerial change and the change to front foot ball to feet football that Selles promises.

Spot on, the lack of chances we created last season considering we had Hamer, JRS, O’Hare, Brooks, Seriki, Burrows etc was really disappointing.

Cannon didn’t do enough overall but we didn’t play to his strengths (as you’ve highlighted much better than I could have!). I’d say the same with Moore and the lack of crosses into him in his defence.

Our pragmatic style meant the strikers were only getting one or two chances a game - only elite strikers will score consistently with so few chances.

Looking back on it after Saturdays game, has that changed anyone's opinion on what positions we still need to sign?

Done two lists, Priority and Depth, priority must be signed first before we can even think about depth.

Priority:
2 x CB: Godfrey, N Zatterstrom and Hughes - any two of those would be ideal.
1 x RB: Young Woo Seol

Depth:
1 x Forward/Winger:
1 x CDM: Iroegbunam, we've got Soumare but would like some backup as Peck cannot play as a lone CDM.

3 priority signings + 2 depth signings = 5 players, get that, and I think we'll be good to go.

In addition to my previous post (#306).

In regards to RW, while predominantly a CAM at Coventry, O'Hare apparently played RW a few times.

Looking at his style of play, you can see why he might be able to do a job out wide.

He's willing to track back (which would have helped Seriki on Saturday), can take on and go round his man, and always has a killer pass/cross in him.

Instead of signing a RW, could we push O'Hare out there instead (dropping Brooks), and have a midfield and attack like this.

---Peck-Soumare-Hamer
O'Hare----Campbell----Barry

That should allow Soumare (CDM) to shield the back line and split the CB's when needed, while giving both Peck and Hamer license to roam in midfield and try and create something for the forward line.

It might be a little harsh on Brooks, but he hardly covered himself in glory on Saturday, and I wasn't surprised when he got taken off.

Whatever we have to find a way of playing both Hamer and Ohare without leaving ourselves wide open. I think Saturday made it clear why Wilder played Hamer out left. Most of us think hes better central but hes an absolute liability when we dont have the ball. You can get away with that out wide but not in the middle.

I agree re Brooks, hes clearly got a lot of talent but at the moment there is something missing. Is it tactical awareness, is it application? I dont know but its becoming clear that unless something changes we cant play him and Seriki together so maybe shifting both Hamer and Ohare wide will help solve these problems.

It might work out better to move Hamer forward to be the right of the front 3 in that situation.

We then could have Soumare, Peck and O'Hare who all have better legs/fitness to get back and cover when we lose the ball high up.

Could do.

It would certainly accommodate Hamer, Peck and O'Hare while also allowing us to put a proper CDM in front of the defence, which would have solved one of the problems from Saturday.

I’m so frustrated with Brooks. Talented player but always comes across to me like he doesn’t look too bothered. I’m sure he is. It’s the demeanour he gives off?

I have him in my “Top Ten List of Quietest Players Ever to Play for Sheffield United”
I can’t remember ever seeing him speak on the pitch, even when he’s scored 😮

Who are the other nine?

I'm not usually negative with my thoughts, I'm more realistic with a positive hope, but this season we seem to be really cutting our cloth and don't appear to be investing at all. I fully understand the budget is smaller, due to a reduction in parachute payments, but even so.

Shame as after spending £10m on TC last season, plus bringing in Premier league loans, it gave me hope we was in good hands - I don't feel that anymore.

A Wednesday supporting friend messaged me today and said something just doesn't seem right at our place with these new owners - and given how bad it is at their place it takes a lot for him to have said that, but i tend to agree with him.

Can folk just calm down a tad. We simply don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, all this doom and gloom speculation will look pretty silly if we bring in the players we need.
In a week or two we could have brought in Godfrey, Hughes, Woo and the Swedish lad… as well as offloading JLT & RND! Perfect! 👌
Trust me… if we don’t recruit I’ll be the first one shaking my fist at the board! But let’s see what unfolds first!
