Billy Sharp

People will though, like they've tried to all season.
Any other supporters in the country would love to have someone like Billy firing them them up the league and treasure him like gold. Not here though, oh no.

Who has tried all season?

I remember a few questioning whether he would be successful under Wilder early in the season but since he’s proven to be, I can’t recall anyone decrying his contributions.

Guy puts in all he can every game he's living everyone one of our dreams to be Centre forward and captain of his beloved Sheffield United, he's scoring the goals that could ultimately see us promoted and yet people want to make him the scape goat.mind boggles.. having said that this thread seems to be pretty positive....for now

Again, who wants to make him a scapegoat? Are these mysterious Sharp haters the same as Pinchy’s mysterious hoof lovers that want us to lose?

As far as contribution to the team goes, I don't think we can single Billy out as the one who has most, I believe every single one of them has done their best, unfortunately there are a few who's best still isn't good enough and that's why they don't play every week, but that said, Billy along with Fleck, Duffy, Basham, Moore and Jake Wright so far are showing what it is to be a wizard!

Tbh, I'm so happy for the bloke, he didn't have the best of times previously at BDTBL, for various reasons, but he's been top notch this time round and I just hope we get the very best possible outcome at the end of this season.

UTB!

My mate and part time Blade (he's actually a Cardiff fan from Cardiff who's godfather to my kids but visits regular - he'll be with us in the John St Stsnd on Saturday!) was flabbergasted when I told him Billy Sharp has his critics amongst us.

It's not just his goals, but the meaning, timing and importance of his goals. You can't put a price on that.

Anyone who questions the importance of him and his goals really does need to take their head for a shit and re-evaluate what it is we're trying to achieve here.

First he was being slated throughout pre-season. Most notably after Grimsby away when he was slagged off for being selfish by not laying off to McCuntly despite scoring.

Then there were the numerous "he only scores penalties" wibblings.

Then there was the "he's shit at penalties" jibes in December.

Then there has been all the "he should've scored 40/50/2000 by now" rubbish.

Then this utter crock of shit post #5

https://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/billy-sharp.52330/#post-1227948

But above all? The reluctance from this forum in general to appreciate Billy and what he has done for us. It's feint praise or silence most of the time. Compare that to the (justified) positivity about the midfield and it becomes even more striking.

I don't know if people think it's clever or cool to not acknowledge the clubs top scorer (Like hipsters who don't like a band because they've gone "too commercial") but it's a pathetic attitude to be honest.

Billy Sharp has been the most important player we've had here for years, not the best but completely invaluable all the same.

In all this Billy-love, I also share the thought that we need another player capable of converting chances. Billy's had a great season so far, and will continue in this same rich vein. He's a natural with instincts that cannot be taught. My one fear is should Billy get injured, what then? Lavery is work in progress, looks good on the ball but still not convinced whether he's capable of delivering the goals we require. Time will tell. What I do feel confident about is Sharp's partnership with Hanson, this will improve with each game, chances will be created, and the big fella will play a vital role in our attacking threat.

Good points and the one thing that could seriously derail us is a serious injury to Billy. I know Lavery hasn't had a long run of starts, but does anybody seriouly think that he, McNulty or Hanson could match Billy's contribution?

Someone made the point a few days ago about how good it is to have locally born fans as owner, manager and captain, let alone top scorer. If any other club in the country came near to this, it would be all over the meejah but we at SUFC seem a little shy in boasting about it.

More power to Billy Blade. Those tossers in South Barnsley can call him 'Billy Blunt', but he will score twice as many goals as whichever useless wanker they have up front.

I'll just stir things a bit by saying that in my honest opinion Keith Edwards would have got at least 10 more in this side. I'll get me coat

Has Billy Sharp scored a lot of goals this season? Yes

Has Billy Sharp scored penalties this season? Yes

Has Billy Sharp played will this season? Yes

Has Billy Sharp missed chances this season? Yes

Has Billy Sharp missed penalties this season? Yes

Has Billy Sharp had poor games this season? Yes

Is it heresy to point out that all the above facts are not mutually exclusive? No. He's had poor games and scored, he's had good games and not scored. He's our top scorer and should be lauded for that - but he does miss chances and he shouldn't be immune from criticism. It's just all about finding a balance.

Well in my 'honest opinion' if my auntie had bollocks, she'd be my uncle.

Another 'honest opinion' of mine is that it is a pretty daft thing to say. Keith Edwards has just had a hip replacement so he wouldn't get round the pitch that well, would he?

You're the one who's keen on grammar aren't you? Read what I wrote again, look for the word 'would' and then check the attached web page. Then get back to me.

The thing is TD, your criticisms of Basham are on a par with those you so rail against when Billy is the subject matter. These criticisms are just as ridiculous as the ones of Billy and your defence of him would carry a little more credence if you laid off Basham.

But Basham has had games this year when he's been diabolical and has been a liability.

I don't recall Sharp putting in a performance like Basham did against Fleetwood..

Yes, I try to make grammatically correct posts, but obviously sometimes the red mist descends when a numpty pops up.

I understand that you mentioned 'would' in a conditional or hypothetical sense, hence my 'hilarious' riposte about the biological unlikelihood of my parent's siblings transferring sex.

As it happens, I disagree with you completely. A fit 30 year old Keith Edwards still wouldn't do 50% of the work Sharp does. The game has changed and standing on the shit line is not what it once was.

Anything else I can do for you while you're here?

Any criticism of Basham is rooted in present reality.

I was calling for him to be team captain last season because he was the only player who looked to have a vague sense of leadership about him. I also thought his performances were on average consistently better than the clowns around him at the time.

This seasons team is exponentially better. Basham has remained adequate at best. When you look back at the goals conceded throughout the season, you'll find him to have been culpable for an unacceptable number of them. Our record since Jake Wrights return bares this out even more starkly.

Billy Sharp scored 20 (2) last season with the worst team in 35 years behind him. We would have been in a relegation fight without him and most likely would've lost that fight.
Even now the team is better in every way since last season he's stepped up and played a vital role in this team. If we go up then I can think of no other player who has been so instrumental over two very different seasons.

There's the distinction.

Can you refer to them as "twats with beards and sleeve tattoos" please, hipster is too nice.

So, you're saying you think Keith Edwards might have been a better striker than Billy is now?

Yeah, probably. That could be why he does our commentary instead of someone like Cadette. Because he's a legend.
