Billy and Bash

They both do.

Seems the club are leaving it late to secure them beyond the summer. Thinking must be if we do manage a promotion, they will not be required.

Big mistake !!

The club is a business now, they don't have time for sensitivity. It's how it seems to me.

I know we are pretty skint but I can't see how another 12 months would hurt us.
Bash transformed things when he came back in ... and Billy seems to be the first striker on the teamsheet.
However , if they are looking for 2 years , they might have to look elsewhere.
Anyone know when our extension options expire ?

There are loads of players id let go of before Bash and Billy if promotion was achieved. And if we stayed down itd be crazy to not renew their deals.

Quote from Billy below:

“Hopefully, the club can tell me before the time it says in my contract because I’d like to know if they want me,”

I think we owe it to both of them to let them sort themselves something out if we’re not extending their contract. It would be a travesty if we don’t.

United have the power. It's categorically not in our interest to trigger the extensions until the last game of the season is over. How daft would we be if they got a long term injury during the last game of the season? The possibility also exists that the club might negotiate a longer deal or different deal with a lower basic than is in the contract. This is the power you get when the club has the extension option rather than the player.

It’s not about power for me, although I can understand the logic of what you are saying.
These are 2 great players, servants and ambassadors for the club, who still have a lot to offer, and don’t like the idea at all that we are playing a game of cat and mouse with em, after the service they have given, and could give in the future.
I don’t support United because they are a business, I support em because I have a real connection to the club, and a sense of loyalty.I believe these 2 players also have a sense of loyalty to the club, and should not be treated as commodities.`Don’t get me wrong, there are many other players, who I believe are just there for the wages.`But these 2 are different. They deserve better!Loyalty should cut both ways.

Does anyone know, what the latest is, on their contracts?
Surely they deserve another couple of seasons, whichever division we find ourselves in,

Both players massively undervalued.
Billy Sharp, Top ever goal scorer in both the Championship and the EFL. Scored for us in the Premier League even from cameos, and a solidly good man. But still dismissed by critics, even within our own fans. What more does Billy Sharp have to do to get recognition for this?
And Basham, brilliant footballer, great heart and spirit, a great character in the dressing room, but treated like a joke cos of his humble English roots (and cos he runs like a baby giraffe)

Very shabby treatment from our club management but sadly what we've come to expect

Both Basham and Billy still have a role to play in this squad, ideally someone else could step up so we don't have to play Sharp every week, but there's definitely still a role for him at this club.

The owners however arent involved through any connection with the club and see football as business

Loyalty is one thing, but runs a fine line towards sentiment. If you pay based on past achievements you'll soon end up in the mire.

Offering anything above 12 months for a player mid-30s is unnecessarily risky. Theres also no real incentive for the club to activate these clauses early. End of the day, both players are happy to stay and if the club want them to then they will.

Personally, both warrant another 12 months, certainly Bash - maybe Sharp on reduced terms as you'd hope for a diminished role (impact sub) with some of the younger guys coming to the fore.

Maybe Bill's interested in coaching and could form part of any longer deal?

You’ve only got to think about how we’ve tried and failed to replace the impact of JOC on the left of defence and how Shit we were without Basham in defence to think it would be a huge mistake ti let bash walk.

Both these lads put their heart and soul into games. If you get a whole team with that mindset you've cracked it.

It's a complete no-brainer!
Regardless of their respective ages, they are two of our very best and most consistent performers this season and can always be relied upon to give everything, represent the club brilliantly, and conduct themselves immaculately. This isn't an issue that should need any risk assessment or pondering in my opinion.
Get both contracts extended now United, you fucking dimwits!

I think he knows he can have another 2 or 3 years as a first team striker in League 1 or League 2 when he's done with us. If we deem him finished this season then he'll get another 2 years in the Championship with someone else.

I'd be looking after him if I were the club.

Its been suggested by Bash previously that by playing a certain number of games a clause in his contract will trigger an automatic extension of 1 year. If that is the case it will be interesting to know how many games are required. In this instance one assumes the only power the Club have to avoid this is to not pick him to ensure the threshold isn't met which is not happening.

Little disconcerting to hear BS saying he is waiting for the Club as you would hope he has the same clause in his contract and is close to achieving the number of games needed.

The problem with all this is the Club is being managed from a distance and Bettis and PH are merely plate spinners with little or no executive decision making powers. Irrespective of what division we are in a 12 month extension is the least we should be offering these 2 players in view of their performances on and off the pitch as at times this season they have looked the only players that have pride in the shirt.

Both need new contracts, it's not like we're carrying them, both contribute as much as the younger lads, Bash is one of the fittest in the squad and Billy can still score goals, although 3 matches in 7 days might be asking too much every week.

I hope they both stay and understand why people think it should be sorted quickly for two loyal servants.
However, as far as I know triggering the extensions would mean their wages stay as they are as effectively it’s the same contract, this could and probably would be unaffordable if we don’t get promotion as they will both be on good money.
We could try to negotiate a lower salary but I understand why the club needs to see what division we are in before it can make an offer.

If the club let these two leave, when there is still playing time left in their legs, I'll have to think long and hard about how much support I'm prepared to give the club under the current owners.

Not even a question of ability, they're both as Sheffield United as you can get, both deserve to end their careers here and even be offered coaching roles if they're interested.

Mark Noble and Seamus Coleman barely get a look in for their clubs now, but they're still club captains and they're still useful at times.

Loyalty.

I think the truth is in the middle somewhere. I don't think anybody would advocate for a ten year contract based on loyalty or sentiment, but then few will want them to leave. Ultimately it's a business decision - there's no sentiment in football. Their contribution (which, as yet, isn't negligible) will be weighed against what we can afford and the expense of replacing them. If either of them are, God forbid, seriously injured, they are unlikely to receive a playing contract. It's worth noting that few are advocating for longer deals for Fleck, Norwood, Stevens, O' Connell etc. They've all been top servants too, and are close to entering their final year...

I hope the club don't go down the route of giving ageing players long term deals on a lower basic wage: we've seen that movie before and it didn't end well.

I think the issue is that the contract extension the club trigger is the same terms they signed 2/3 years ago but they’re now 2/3 years older so the club will probably want to renegotiate lesser terms.

I think we should keep them both, however they should no longer be on premiership wages

Both deserve to see out the rest of their careers with the club imo.

Absolute legends the pair of them.

It wouldn’t be daft at all to renew players contracts that you want to keep and to do it ahead of time. They can sign with someone else from the end of February I believe.

What’s daft is if you’re unable to make a decision on two of the most consistent performers all season.

I’d give Billy a year and Bash two years, both on less money.

If they can leave in Feb (or , rather, sign a pre contract for next season) that puts a different spin on it. More urgency would be needed - particularly if the club feels rivals will match or better their wages. Fans will always point the finger at the club: if they drop off massively during the term of the 'new' contracts, the question will be asked: Why did you give these old players this deal?! The question has been asked recently of Clarke, Stevens and Norwood. If they become injury prone the same question will be asked. There isn't many supporters demanding new deals for Fleck, Norwood, McGoldrick, Stevens etc. All top players for us. It's the nature of the beast. Don't disagree on your hypothetical deals by the way.

Hecklingbottom has said in a very recent Interview that it depends on what division we're in next season....

I only hope both of the players can wait and see what the club wants, but thier agents won't mess about, Sunderland would be crazy if they weren't in for Sharp.. And if you think Wilder isn't looking at bash think again..

The ownership of this club are putting the decision into the players hands, and if we don't get news shortly they'll both secure work at other clubs..
