Just been reading about Jack Rodwell at Sunderland and was shocked at his ridiculous wage of £70,000 a week on a 4 year contract after a £10m transfer fee. He has only played 67 games in nearly 4 years.

Got me thinking, what player has been our biggest waste of money for the blades?

In terms of cost financially in a time where we haven’t been blessed with money, look no further than Dean Hammond. I don’t know the figure, but it’s not hard to imagine the club forked out over £1m in total for this incumbent. At a time immediately prior to one of our best ever managers needing a bit of extra dough to help us back to the premier league and the board being unable to provide it.

Thanks Dean

Stretching back to the PL season, I can think of the following who didn't deserve their excessive transfer fee/wages while offering practically nothing:

Li Tie, Luton Shelton, David Sommeil, David Cotterill, Andy Taylor, Lyle Taylor, Florent Cuvelier, Michael Higdon, Dean Hammond and Martyn Woolford.

Some grim reading there.

Nearly included Darius Henderson who we paid over £3m for. I know he scored a few goals, but it was a lot of money for what is essentially a battering ram.

Ched Evans cost a similar amount, and one fantastic season in League 1 probably doesn't represent value for money either.

And thanks, Adkins. Hammond made a highly-suspicious exactly 30 starts for us, was never subbed - despite being appalling - and scored two goals. Or wasn't I seeing all the work he did? Then we played Man. United away in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Over 74k in attendance. a replay looming and Hammond gifted a penalty to Rooney at the end. Still, it was estimated that we made £1m from this tie. Pity it all went into Adkins' pocket four months later.
Brian Deane. What a waste of £35k, Donny have never stopped laughing at that one.

Allowing for inflation, the Deane fee was a steal compared to the £27,500 Watford conned us out of for Anthony Currie in 1968...

Cotterill was a monster whilst he was on loan. As soon as his deal was made permanent he turned to shit. Expensive, gold plated shit.

Often happens. John Brayford, anyone?
