Biggest waste of money?

Ashley ward.... new treatment table was ordered as soon as the ink was dry on that one.... didn’t stop him building a few houses though for the Man U squad.. ahem...

But the buscuit was taken by £32:000 a week nyron nosworthy.... he left then got released and played non league straight after I believe... shrugged his shoulders without a care in the world... and who can blame him..

Honourable mention for “unseen” dean Hammond.. who’s 650k wages were settled without him ever kicking a ball.. lol..

Chris Guthrie.
Couldn't agree more - remeber friendly at Notts County (we had been knocked out of cup at 3rd round), their CF goes around our goalie, and blasts over the bar, we chant "you've been watching Guthrie". Actually felt sorry for him

He was shit, but you're talking utter bollocks. He was only ever on loan to us from Sunderland, they then loaned him then sold him to Watford and he played in the Championship for two seasons after we'd been relegated to League 1, then in the next few seasons played a few games for a few teams in the Championship and Leagues 1 and 2. He also got 14 caps for Jamaica he'd left us, so the claim he went straight to non league is just delusional rewriting of history. He should have gone straight to the glue factory, but that's not what happened.

His transfer fee was a bit exorbitant but I thought he was a reasonable defender to be honest.

Considering we received more than we paid for him, I don't think he was really a waste of money.

I see I'm in the minority here. :) I remember him as an awful player. Physically imposing, yes, but lacking in nearly every other aspect of the game a premier league defender needs to possess. His lack of composure, positional sense and poor decision making meant he regularly turned drama's in crises in our defense. 'Bomb scare' and 'Bambi on ice' were nicknames that people sat around me gave him. I subsequently saw him play for other teams, and he had the rare skill of looking bad at every level he played. The same summer Lescott went to Everton for £2m (upfront) + £2m (over 2.5 yrs) + £1m (based on apps). Viewed as a gross figure, the £3.5m we spent on him was a monumental waste and was just another example of the money we wanked away that season on substandard shirt fillers.

On the plus side, he was alleged to give a cracking wet shave. :D

He was very highly rated when we signed him and had a good partnership with Youl Mawene at Preston at the time...never quite made the step up to the Prem though and his indiscipline was obviously an issue

Club's money has to be Robson/Robinson who spunked millions in fees and wages on Carney, Hendrie, Sick-note-Naysmith and Billy to play on the wing.

Whilst Speed and Ehiogu were decent for us, they were also on >£25k/week too, so that saw a few million more down the pan that a championship club couldn't justify.

Our money - Space Caddette in 1987. Having signed up for Blades Revival on the night at Roxys, we all paid our £2 poer week waitng for the rising superstar to lift us up the table. We got a nice little lad who ran around quite a bit but couldn't hit a barn door. Coincidentally he also came from Sarfend, who'd had our pants down in 1975 for Guthrie. Let's hope Lenny breaks the mould.

Late 70’s mate. Decent scoring record for Chelsea then he signed for us for 1 season and was useless. Not sure if he ended up being injured and jacking in football after that season.

Finneston was a class act. Injury finished him off, although i'm not too sure if he was carrying this when we signed him or not.

He was actually involved in three successive promotion campaigns with Crawley and Rotherham.

Wasn't he signed by Warnock in the season he wasn't given any money to spend? Other than the £3m he spent "for the future" of course.

Believe so. Happy Harry Haslam signing -I think- and Scottish, arf decent goals per game ratio. Retired through injury and I'm not sure Blades might have received an insurance pay out.

All the above but I remember we were supposed to get our money back as he was insured. Don't imagine any insurance companies have the underwriters to insure players these days!

Claude Davis was also starting CB for Derby in the 07/08 season, which I think currently holds the record for the worst team ever over a 38 game season. Jay McEveley also played in that team so it might be unfair to blame Claude 100%. Google 'Claude Davis, shit footballer' and see what others say about him. He's not held in high regard.

Bomb scare was Tebily wasn't it ?
Part of the famous Celtic back 3 of Weir-Tebily-Scheidt.

Ched Evans was well on course to be the biggest waste of money.
High transfer fee, high salary but only underwhelming average performances.

Then just as his new contract was close to ending and up for renegotiation
He played like a man possessed and was simply brilliant and really impressive in those last few months.

Surprised there hasn’t been a mention of Simmo! May not have paid a fee for him (did we?!) but he wouldn’t have come to play for low wages.
