I am 52 and have been a Lane regular since 1970 (apart from the part timer years in the 1980s)

Back row (l to r) Paul Garner, Colin Franks, Eddie Colquhoun, Jim Brown, Steve Conroy, Simon Stainrod, John Flynn, Cliff Calvert.
Front row; Alan Whittle, Steve Ludlam, Chico Hamilton,Chris Guthrie, Alan Woodward,Tony Kenworthy, John McGeady, David Bradford, Jimmy Johnstone

Some time after the above photo was taken we had to have another squad photo for that season which is seen below

Oh yes, John Ebbrell too! I was told he failed our medical and we couldnt find any insurance company to insure him but still paid £1M to Everton! Madness!
I was told that Barry Butlin failed his medical due to his back problem but he said he would insure himself to play for us

Paul McGrath was another one we couldn't get any insurance on. Interestingly I knew the guy who did the insurance of players for both United and Wednesday (he's now retired) and both clubs have done some rather strange and quirky deals over the years. The Jimmy Johnstone deal was particularly interesting, and Jack Charlton regularly wanted to sign players the club couldn't get insured.

Paul Coutts may be a good player, I'll admit I don't know much about him, but why is Clough so keen to go after players with serious injury troubles? It may offer value but it's also a big risk. We've already got J Wallace almost permanently out of action. McCarthy had been out a long time when he came on loan and struggled to make any impact until eventually we sent him back. Steve Davies is another one of Clough's targets who's struggled to stay fit. It takes players a long time to reach the level they were playing at prior to a long term injury, and some unfortunately never do.

As for Freeman, he was a good player last year, but we already have options in that position and Flynn has been excelling there recently. He will likely end up on the bench.

Neither would be terrible signings but it's questionable how much of an immediate impact they would make on the team, which is what we need.

Wasn't ogrady signed while injured.... he missed the first game if I remember...

Coutts is a good player, would go straight into the team and has already played for Derby this season. If it wasn't for the incredible talent in Derby's midfield, probably the best in the division, he would be a regular in Derby's or any Championship team.

Your view is supported by the Derby line-up today. Craig Bryson, one of the best in the league, is on the bench. Interestingly, Paul Coutts, who is usually in the 18, is not today.

Preston now also in for Coutts. Hope Clough gets him signed up quickly, especially since it's Preston who are after him!

It was actually more than a £1m . How many other people personally profited from this deal , and the reason it went through .
