I agree. This time last year he would have been looking at mid to low tier Prem jobs like Southampton, Palace, Brighton etc.

Howe was relegated on the last day of the season, after keeping Bournemouth in the prem for a few years
Bilic has managed Croatia to the Qtr finals of Euro's, and got WBA promotion
Lampard took Derby to the EFL POF, and Chelsea to 4th under a transfer embargo, sacked when they went to mid table

How many managers will have suffered the sharp decline from 9th to rock bottom?

Before CW is offered anything resembling a mid to lower Prem job, he needs to rebuild his reputation, to prove he can bounce back from the despair of this season - hopefully that will start on the 7th August with us!!

He'll also need to avoid the "promotion specialist" and "can't do it in the Prem" tags that have stuck to managers like Warnock and Holloway.
I think his best option is to stick with us, take us up and make it stick for a few years (maybe even a little European adventure as well)

Totally agreed you only need to look at Chris Morgan when he was thrown in at the deep end. But saying that not all players make good managers, Billy would be an excellent attacking coach for U23s or academy but can't see him as manager yet.

The other prime example in our recent history is David Weir.

He was a 1st time manager but had been managing the Everton U23's so at least had some experience in management and look how that turned out.

I don't get the attraction of Benitez, when he has good players and good resources he's superb, but his Newcastle side was barely any better than Bruce's, playing drab negative football hoping for 0-0 for about 80 minutes of most games even when they were already losing. With even less resources, he'd get us back up, but I'm not sure we'd get an exciting Champs League side out of him.

Wilder could teach Rafa a thing or two about boring defensive football with a highlilghts reel from his team selections and tactics this season including the marvelous 'back 8'. Although I do think Rafa as a DoF to Wilder's first team coach would be good.
