Best team line up with Leonard in midfield

Lundstram was bought as a squad player last summer, that's been explained earlier in the thread. The JTW is different, you buy someone who can make an immediate impact on the team to give a boost to whatever situation you are in. If Leonard was bought just to sit on the bench Wilder would have waited till summer and got him for nowt and spent the money elsewhere.

Wilder has bought Leonard to play ahead of Lundstram. The same as he bought Stearman to replace Wright, Baldock to replace Freeman and Stevens to replace Lafferty despite the protestations on this forum. Thank fuck CW can see further than the end of his nose.

That’s not been explained earlier in the thread, it was put forward as someone’s opinion. I asked you earlier and you’ve not yet answered. Would Leonard have been a squad player if we had bought him in the summer like we intended? If not, who would he have replaced?

A few on the Southend forums reckon he is also very good as a RWB, whilst I don't see him playing there unless absolutely necessary he could be a better option than Bash when others are injured.

I did answer but you seem to be processing things selectively. I said Duffy's place was up for grabs at the start of the season and this is where I would have expected to see Leonard start. However, things have panned out differently and Duffy is the main man in midfield now. That's why Lundstram is the one who is going to give way instead.

#59 is where I asked and you didn’t reply.

Leonard isn’t an attacking midfielder so why would he have been playing in Duffy’s position?

Thank fuck for a common sense post. Two points to consider here:

1. Does anyone seriously think that Leonard will be happy to come here just to warm the bench.
2. United's policy is to sign players who are better than we have already got. It's called improving the team. He will start ahead of Lundstram.

so going by what you say why did lundstram have to wait for his chance?? surely when he was signed by your reasoning coutts should have been immediately dropped?? he will have to fight for a place. just like lundstram did, and currently he is performing very well. leonard will have to earn it just like any other new signing would

The person who’s done the least recently is Fleck. He was very poor against Bolton and got outshone by Lundstram at Bristol and Derby.

Fleck was very good at Derby.

People are just more prone to praising Lundstram at the minute.

Read post #42, do keep up.

Deary me, I've just gone through all that with another poster who only reads selective posts. Lundstram was not bought to replace Coutts, he was bought as a squad player. Leonard is a different kettle of fish. Fuck me, if we bought Messi some of you lot would be saying he has to earn the shirt to play ahead of Sharp or Donaldson.

As they play in different positions it didn’t really answer the question did it. Unless you think we would have played a different system

Lets revisit this after the pig game and see who's right and who's wrong. You're just going round in circles at the moment.

As I’ve said before you might be right about Leonard starting but your logic doesn’t add up at all.

And considering Leonard wouldn’t have replaced Duffy you’ve still not answered the question

Lundstram had the most passes in championship and the most created chances in Europe’s top 5 leagues!

It’s not that there prone to praising him it’s because he is looking immense.

Also to the above posts.

Leonard won’t start on Friday unless there’s injuries.

Just thread through this topic it’s utterly amazes me how people are writing off Lundstram again already. If he carries on progressing as he is he will be our best midfielder.

Yes and we are talking strong physical athletes with big hearts and engines and no little skill and awareness.

Wilder said long ago that he likes midfielders to be able to do every aspect of the job, not just part of it.

yep totally different kettle of fish. both league 1 players who haven't played higher. i can see your leonard - messi link though. 2 peas in a pod. im glad your aware how wilder views his signings. i presume you speak to him daily. or as like the rest of us i assume its just your opinion and therefore not a fact, so despite how well he is playing you believe lundstram should and will be out straight away??

Assuming we don't actually get the deal done until Monday then he won't have had much time on the training ground with us. I'd expect him to start on the bench. I do think it's in Wilder's mind that Lenny will be a first team regular but Lundstram is making himself hard to drop. As a younger player his form may drop off a bit at some point which is probably when Leonard will get his chance, or if Fleck does another Scottish tackle.

Next season may be interesting, assuming we keep Coutts and Fleck.

Since Lundstram came into the team United's record has been appalling. He reminds me of Ryan Flynn, looks good with the ball, can run with it and make up ground, then stops, looks around and makes a 5 yard backwards or sideways pass. He cannot make an incisive pass whilst he's running with the ball. Not good enough.

Only Serie A of all the other top leagues played over that weekend.

He's been good but a big reason for the praise he's getting is the low standards people have for him following his slow start. There have been times when he's been lauded as 'brilliant' when in reality he's just been 'good'. Wilder would say the same I'm sure.

Finally! It would have just been easier to say that you don’t think Lundstram is very good, rather than trying to come up with some nonsensical, illogical argument as to why Leonard will start instead of him.

I said Leonard was a better player than him. Which part of that did you find confusing?

I think we may be in for a surprise and Wilder has ideas if playing him at right side centre halve , we will wait and see!

I have no doubt his versatility played a huge part in Wilder's long pursuit of him.

He'll be another Basham for us, but more of a natural midfielder.

He started out as a right back. He can play RB, RWB an RCB comfortably. Will be a valuable player for our squad.

Yep, don't trust Wikipedia for anything other than squad lists!

or it could just be the whole team hasn't been at their best. and he has hardly had a settled mid to get used to playing with. fleck banned. duffy sick. amazes me how people love a scapegoat

Never seen Messi play in the flesh either. Must be crap then eh?

must be all the times you have watched southend live on tv then. you have as much idea as anyone else what leonard will be like. and that is zero. as your clearly always right ill happily offer a 100 quid bet lundstram starts against the oinkers if fit. as in your book its a certainty he wont ill expect the wager to.be on
