Best none Blade sporting moments you 'were there'

Hardly a great sporting moment, but any game that ends 4-5 is good entertainment, even if England u-15s lost. Paul Rideout scored a hattrick for England, and we took a coach down from High Storrs School because one of our schoolmates, Richard Howe, was England's sub goaly. He was in the year above us but we were happy to bask in the reflected glory as before High Storrs he'd been at Greystones like me and several of my friends.

I remember my Blades-attending mate Jez giving it some proper industrial Shoreham End language at one point and a posh-sounding bloke in front turned round to tick him off angrily for such offensive words. I'd like to think Jez told him to "fuck off" but all we probably did was look at each other and piss ourselves laughing.

Last one before I get some sleep, probably. This is Richard Ellison's incredible spell of bowling at Edgbaston in 1985. When he got Border out we knew we were going to win the match.

You can actually see me in the crowd at 5.28 when Jeff Thomson catches Ian Botham and sticks two fingers up at the England fans.

Well I was there for the battle of bramall lane but the fact that warnock was there does that class it as a none blade supporting event if so then I’m happy warnocks a knob never been a blade 😂

I saw day 4 (I think) of the Australia v New Zealand test in Perth in December 2001, which was notable as it featured Shane Warne’s highest test score. He was caught in the deep for 99 with 2 balls of the day to go.

I was also there for 2 days of the Brisbane Test in the whitewash in 2006-7, including day one when Harmison bowled the first ball to second slip and it went downhill from there!

Day 4 at Hoylake when Tiger won. Didn't really follow the days events as well as you could on the telly but great atmosphere.

I was at Old Trafford for the two days rain delayed semi-final when Lancashire won off the last delivery. Great cricket, rubbish result.
After that, we christened anyone who managed to hit the ball via edge or inside edge for 4 with any regularity as scoring in the 'Warren Hegg -v'.

Fairly easy for me, top 2, nothing else comes remotely close:

The Oval 2005, day 5

Headingley 2019, day 4

thanks for that. Reminded mew of another greatest moment 'I was there'. In 2009 me & mates decide to get tickets for the Oval as it was the only ground we hadn't been to. I tried to get 3rd day tickets as normal but they sold out quickly. Unable to contact my mates I made a 'executive' decision to buy tickets for the 4th day (Sunday). Turned out to be a master & a magical day as Flintoff & co retained The Ashes that day.

Brilliant

I had tickets for Headingley but had also got tickets for England v Ireland at Twickenham the day before. We plumped for Twickenham (a great game) which turned out to be a massive mistake.

We were at Headingley that year the day before Botham started on his first century & Engkand collapsed. I was 17 & remember fetching my 'round' back from the bar. As I passed the Booky's tent odds were 500 - 1 on England to win. Tongue in cheek I said to the lads "shall we all put ten Bob on England". I got a unanimous "f##k off" from all of'em. Next day history was made.

Fairly easy two for me too.
2005 Ashes The Oval Day 5. I was with Zone Man Wilf who posted earlier.

Also day 1 of the 2010 Melbourne test which virtually retained the Ashes. Aus 98 all out, Eng 147-0.

I’ve also seen 3 Test Match hat-tricks (Hoggard, Warne, Siddle) and Lara’s 400.

9th September 1989.
I remember watching Blades v Brighton from the Bramall Lane Upper tier. Blades were 3 - 0 up, with a bout 5 mins left Brighton had turned it round and led 4 - 3. Blades equalised & in injury time John Francis popped up to seal it for the Blades. Unbelievable.

Couldn't get tickets for the London Olympics but managed to get one for the Paralympics. Watching the athletes compete was amazing. We stayed right till the end when some Russian hammer thrower broke the World record in his event. Those that were left cheered so loudly it was an honour to be there to witness it.A bit sentimental I know but a great day out indeed.

Fantastic thread, this has brought back so many great memories from down the years. I have seen plenty of footy that didn’t involve the Blades but somehow it just doesn’t count so much!
I’m going to subvert the OP and go for 2019 as the greatest sporting year of my life. Not only did we get to see the Blades promoted and then established in the Prem but I was lucky enough to be at:
  1. Premiership final: Saracens beat Exeter 37-34 in the best game of rugby, in terms of both ferocity and skill, of either code that I have ever seen outside an international;
  2. The Ashes: went to all 4 days at Headingley with my family. I’ve travelled around the world watching cricket and never known an atmosphere like it. Ben Stokes, you beauty!
  3. World Cup: England v NZ in the semi-final at Yokohama. I never thought we would win; what a fantastic feeling and what a night out afterwards!
2019; what a fucking year that was!

One of the best games I've ever witnessed. We made it 4-4 with a penalty from Jock Bryson - as he was waiting to take it my heart was pounding like never before.

I will have been on the same coach as you. Richard Howe was in the same year as me at High Storrs.
I can recall a few of the more adventurous on the coach getting the tube down to Soho and then
missing the kick off.

Sadly Richard Howe passed away a good few years ago.

Sheesh, I didn't know that about Richard Howe.

Matthew Batley, the school's cello-playing prodigy, was one of those who went to Soho. They not only missed kick-off but most of the first half as well if I remember rightly.

My best sporting event was not for the game but for the after event. Grace Road Leicester. May 1999. Scotland v West Indies . Lovely day , mini bus of us looking forward to some World Cup cricket. Up goes the toss think Gavin Hamilton won the toss and decided to F*****g bat. All out for something like 68 Windies knock em off with some 230 balls left and by 12 o clock, mini bus collecting us at 7.30. Luckily bars did stay open, about 3 o clock some well drunk Scottish lasses in corperate tents asked us to have a game of cricket with them . They all had kilts on and could barely stand let alone hit a tennis ball with a bottle of shampers ,we kept lobbing the ball up for them to jump up to catch and them not knowing every time they did that we could see what Scottish lasses wore under their kilts. Nothing , some exquisite views and my heart was pounding like never before.

Was also at the Oval on the 5th day in 2005. My mrs bought me tickets sort-of as a joke present for my birthday (months before the series even started), they were only a fiver. The joke was "we'll have lost the Ashes by this point, and a lot of tests don't go to five days anyway, so we probably won't use these... but for a fiver, why not". Easily the best value for money present I've ever received. Was sat on the front row and handed the ball back to Brett Lee at one point after Pietersen had flayed yet another boundary (he was very polite considering the circumstances - as was I).

I got lucky with the London 2012 tickets, was at the men's basketball gold medal game (if you're into NBA, the list of players who played in this is insane: Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Harden...) and also the first session of athletics - Ennis setting a world's best time in the heptathlon hurdles on her way to gold, and just the whole feeling that this was "real" and happening in our country, was a great moment.

Oh, and was also at the Joshua v Klitschko fight - amazing seeing that in the flesh.

Saw Ronnie O'Sullivan make a maximum at the Crucible (about 2011 I think). Unbelievable moment and as good as seeing any Blades win.

Quite low key but pretty significant, I was at the MEN for NIgel Benn's final fight (his 2nd v Collins where he retired on his stool). The final hurrah of one of our greatest ever boxers.

I was also in Paris for PSG v Sheffield Eagles, which was the 1st ever match in Super League, a very historic moment for that sport.

Twickenham v Australia 1982. It has been described by the BBC as "perhaps the most famous of all streaks. I know because I was there! But in an un-ordained capacity you understand!!
