For a variety of reasons went to see Sheffield FC play on the infamous Port Vale away Boxing Day snow fest a couple of years ago.

I returned to my Mother in laws full to my personal brim of Jaipur in time for a superb leg of lamb and bottle of Barolo, as opposed to being snow stuck in Derbyshire somewhere in a confined vehicle with a load of post Xmas sprouts and too much ale farting Blades (have you met the wife??)

Most entertaining team World cup 82
Wembley tickets £10 to see these. Bargain.

I also went to this game as was in Barcelona for the weekend.

Couple of observations.

Pre match was completely different from England. No masses of people in pubs drinking although I was frantically trying to find one in true Brit fashion.

The number of fans outside the ground a couple of hours before kick off was astounding. Thousands of people doing nothing but waving flags and blowing horns.

Called at the ground the day before for a look round. Again the number of people milling round the stadium was unreal.

That Barcelona team was a pure joy to watch live. Iniesta on a different planet.

As you rightly pointed out, Messi was only a sub due to an injury and when he came in they were kicking towards the other end to where I was sat so didn’t really get a closeup of him but typical messi bangs a couple of goals in in the 25 mins he was on the pitch.

Although there was 90000 or so in the ground there were times in the match when it was so quiet you could here a pin drop.

The Betis fans were up in the gods and there wasn’t any chanting between opposing fans

Lastly it’s nice to hear that I wasnt the only blade in attendance that night 👍

I managed to find a bar just round the corner from the ground, although I remember it looking like a bank from the outside so maybe you just walked past it!
I was up in the gods also, pretty much on the halfway line directly across from the dugouts. not the best in terms of atmosphere (like you say, not that there was much of one anyway) but wow, what a view. perfect position to look down on the whole pitch and watch the tactical precision of that barça team.
the away fans stuck with me as well. I'd say there was about 100 betis fans, if that? just in a tiny green pocket tucked away high in the corner. not sure if that's typical for Spanish football but very weird.

Spurs 3 Man City 4 in the FA Cup 2004 I think. City 3 down and down to ten men at half time and won 4-3. Strictly speaking I wasn’t at it but did watch it

Bolton 4 Reading 3 aet, play off final in 1995. Reading went 2-0 up early in the game, then missed a penalty. Bolton scored half way through the second half then again with 4 minutes left. Bolton scored twice in injury time but Reading pulled one back with a couple of minutes.

Never known non-Blades related tension like it

Used to watch Chessy a few times back in the 80's. Remember seeing them beat Crewe 3-1 at Saltergate. Ernie Moss was playing and scored the 3rd and they got promoted from Div 4 that season. Remember the stand I was in still had hay on the floor!
I watched Chesterfield a bit in the early 1970s, the best was when they beat Peterborough 3-1 to clinch the 4th division championship in April 1970. My dad and I ran on the pitch running with the Chesterfield players parading the trophy.

Middlesbrough 4-2 Steaua Bucharest, (agg 4-3), UEFA Cup Semi Final, 2006.

I was a student in Teesside at the time and because it was a Boro home game tickets were very much available. Even for the biggest game in their history I could walk up to the ground 3 days before and have a selection of pairs of seats to choose for me and my dad. Having decided against going to the QF against Basel (best game I had the chance to go to but didn't) and thinking I would never see a European semi final involving United I made sure I went to this one. (I'm much less sure on that last point now than I was in 2006.)

2 down on the night (almost entirely because Brad Jones was in goal rather than Mark Schwarzer) Boro began the fightback with Maccarone later in the first half. Viduka looped a header in, Riggott bundled one in from close range and in the 89th minute Maccarone again with a diving header. Same player, same minute, same result as the round before. Unbelievable. It's right up there with the Forest playoff semi as the best game I've ever seen.

So, what's the best non-SUFC game you've been to?
England v Australia at Twickenham, 2nd December 2010.

Brilliant

I went to watch Barca vs Villarreal and it was the same then, literally a handful of their fans. Away support doesn’t seem to be a thing in Spain.

I went to quite a few Chessie games in that 1969/70 season. They had some good players. Tommy Fenoughty, John Archer, Albert Holmes and of course Kevin Randall and Ernie Moss up front.

I can't remember any really exciting games that didn't involve the Blades. In the mid 1970's I was living in Birmingham and went to see Villa quite a bit.

Went to see them win the League cup (replay) at Old Trafford beating Everton 3-2. Chris Nicholl not known for his scoring scored a superb long distance goal.

Another game was Villa v Man Utd at Villa Park. Great atmosphere on the Holte End. Must have been about November 1976. Villa won 3-2 I think. Andy Gray scored a typical header. What a striker he was.

After the game went down to London to a party, around Fulham I think. Next day tried hitching a lift back to Brum and was pulled up and fined by the police for hitching on a motorway.

Arsenal 5-3 Middlesborough

It was Arsenal’s 42nd unbeaten game in a row. 2004. Beautiful sunshine. Highbury

Arsenal went 3-1 down after about 50 mins

Then came three goals in about 11 mins. Henry added a fifth late on to seal the deal.

Highbury was absolutely banging.

Croatia 3-0 Denmark at Swillsboro Euro 96.

Davor Suker chipped Scheimcal from the edge of the area - what a player what a performance

Sheffield Wednesday 0-5 Norwich City

Can't remember the year but it was great. Early 00's is my guess.

We didnt play Bristol Rovers that day. We lost 2-0 at home to Villa
Got it. Stockport County had beaten Bristol Rovers in 3rd rd replay and we'd beaten Bristol City in 3rd rd replay.
My Dad, who had a Minor 1000 with a Liverpool reg had taken me to the County v Rovers replay and we'd been booed as we drove away from the ground!

My friend once convinced me to goto a sheffield wednesday game, i resisted for ages but eventually gave in, it was my first game there and last game there... glad I went though:

Sheffield Wednesday 1 - 7 Notts Forest, 1st April 1995

Fantastic game, gave me some of the best jokes id ever seen!

Mallorca 3 Athletico Madrid 4 - 21/05/2011 Aguero Hat trick , De Gea both played for Athletico, the rest they say is history. To top it off it was a day spent with Billy Beer!

Been thinking about this for days. I think I've only ever been to 2 non Blades games.
1. 12th April 1980 Arsenal 0 Liverpool 0 - FA Cup Semi-final at Hillsborough ... probably the most boring semi final ever.
2. Met a West Ham fan on holiday & went to watch Pigs v West Ham back in the 80's. I was that bored i can't even remember the score.

If it's not Blades, I can't be arsed.

Been to the odd non Blades game, not many immediately spring to mind other than:
Chesterfield 2 Blackpool 0 - 1st Jan 2007 - game was crap quality as you might expect but the fact that it was pissing with rain and puddles on the field made it entertaining, would have probably been called off these days.

Rotherham 3 Barnet 4 - 18th October 2008 - back when Rotherham were at Don Valley. Rotherham took the lead, missed a penalty at 1-1, Barnet had a bloke sent off, Rotherham went 4-1 down then pulled back 2 goals and peppered Barnet's goal for the last 10 minutes

Chesterfield 3 - Middlesbrough 3
Semi-Final of the cup at Old Trafford. Chessie 3-1 up and I genuinely thought we would see a 3rd tier team in the cup final !
But they let in 2 goals late on but should have had a penalty if my memory serves.
They lost the replay 3-0 I think?

Pigs 0 Santos 2 - ok not the greatest game but just to have actually seen Pele play.
Thought that was a goalless draw ? I went to it as well just to see Pele as I worked on Middlewood Road facing the rust bucket but my mind may be playing tricks ?

Stocksbridge Park Steels 3 - 5 Blyth Spartans.
Attendence 32.

'Dale drove at his marker Agus and turned him inside out no fewer than three times before lashing the ball into the top corner from a seemingly impossible angle.'

Worth the entry fee to see this live. The write up doesn't do it justice.

Liverpool vs Auxerre in about 1991. Auxerre were 2-0 up after the first leg but Liverpool won 3-0 at Anfield with Mark Walters scoring the third late on. It was mayhem! (I was a student in Liverpool at the time which is why I was there!)
