The team at Hillsborough. Pele played rubbish in my opinion.

Image result for santos team 1972

That was the second meeting of the two clubs and was a pretty dull affair . The first meeting , a night match in '68 , was a different kettle of fish altogether .

My recollection is that it started off like an exhibition match but gradually developed into a proper contest in which Wendy played pretty well but Santos were at times breathtaking . The large crowd included lots of Blades and the atmosphere was terrific .

Though it pains me deeply to say it , even better than that and definitely my no.1 non Blades watching experience was the Grunters 5-4 victory over the great Man U side of '68 which included a forward line of Charlton , Kidd , Law and Best .

For sheer excitement, skill ( from Man U of course ) and drama I have to say I've never seen a match quite like it .

Sorry if this offends .

Pigs 1 - Man C 2, 22 April 1971. Pigs relegated.

George Armstrong Testimonial. Arsenal 1 - Barcelona 3. March 1974. Johann Cruyff masterclass. Played like a real game.

Coventry 3-Leeds 2 semi final was good. I hung about outside the ground with no real intention of buying a ticket and then at 14-50hs they were flogging them for a fiver. Keith Edwards scored for Leeds, fortunately they lost.

Also blagged a ticket for Liverpool v Everton League Cup final replay at Maine road early 1980s. I was living near Maine Rd at the time.

Similarly I was in Glasgow 1980 and by chance the OF derby was on at Parkhead, I bought a ticket in a Pub asking if there was a neutral area, to be advised not, and you were at one side or the other ! Great !
It was the first derby since the Hamden Cup Final riot. Never seen as many pissed up people in my life.

I also went to Arsenal 2 v 4 Spurs about 1982. Trouble all through the match at the kop end, à steady stream of arrests escorted round the pitch

Liverpool. Spanked forest 5. 0 at Anfield the year after forest won the title i swear to this day i never seen a more complete performace ever

Chesterfield 3 - Middlesbrough 3
Semi-Final of the cup at Old Trafford. Chessie 3-1 up and I genuinely thought we would see a 3rd tier team in the cup final !
But they let in 2 goals late on but should have had a penalty if my memory serves.
They lost the replay 3-0 I think?
This is mine too, CFC should have had a Penalty when Andy Morris was wrestled to the ground in the area - Also ref David Elleray disallowed a perfectly good goal by Jonathan Howard (Hit the Crossbar and bounced well over the Line) at 3-2 (I think?) Other one would be; Oldham 7 Scarboro' 0 in League Cup, Frankie Bunn scored 6 (a Record) and it was FREEZING despite only being October! Will NEVER forget the Looks on my Chezzy supporting mates at 3-1 up..:( Went to the replay too, (at Swillsboro) where Boro' inevitably swept to a Comfortable 3-0 win..

Oh this is so easy.

Brentford 2-0 Leeds

ALMOST more enjoyable than any other Blades match as no pressure

My mates went I didn't have the balls and stayed home listening on radio, Hull needed to win 3-0 and were 2 up inside 10 minutes IMS. I then spent the rest of the game pacing round my house or walking round the lump it was terrible, I wish I had gone now.
This game was what football is all about for my money. It defined exactly why I adore being there, experiencing the utter agony and then the ultimate ecstasy. Driving over the pennines that evening the nerves were already jangling. Inside the ground amongst thousands of Blades fans making it feel like a home match before the teams came out seemed to dampen all fears - a bit of a carnival atmosphere. Then kick-off and the total domination by a rampant Hull City side who looked every inch a nailed-on promotion outfit and the nerves again jangling like crazy. Brian Marwood was on fire right from the off and the Burnley defence crumbled.

My naturally pessimistic brother-in-law convinced me we were toast, and at 2-0 with hours yet to play it was game over - a hatfull of goals a racing certainty. Hull only needed one more to go up and leave us on our collective Blades arses. Then ........ the most extraordinary phenomenon I'd never witnessed before, or ever since:

Blades fans - all of us - went beserk and the Burnley players and fans alike were suddenly transported into a bloody Cup-Final. Every Burnley touch was cheered to the rafters; every Hull touch met with boos and oft-deafening whistles. I was on the front row of the upper stand and hanging over the edge screaming and pleading with the Burnley lads to step up and graft their arses off. They had nowt to play for before kick-off; they damn well had now!!

They defended like real heroes that night, as if Churchill himself had given them the dressing room pep-talk. The scenes at the end of the match were unbelievable. The Burnley fans loved it, and I will always have a soft spot for the Claret & Blue - the perfect antidote to those other tossers who play in the same colours.

East Fife v Forfar, Scottish Cup Replay in November 2003, at the 3 sided Bayview Stadium overlooked by a power station, Kenny Deuchar who went on to score a shed load of goals for Gretna as they climbed the leagues playing for East Fife. We stood with the Forfar supporters. We got quite giddy when the score got to 3-3, thoughts of the comedy 5-4 scoreline in our heads. It finished 3-3 though after extra time, East Fife won 4-1 on penalties. Post match beers in Methill and then Kirkcaldy was an experience too 🙈

I remember listening to a very weak commentary with a wire round my house as an aeriel. From that amazing moment you mentioned the Blades fans built up to a crescendo. After the match - was it Robert Jackson? - rang Keith Edwards, as I recall, and he was just putting his children to bed.
What a night and probably the most exciting commentary I've heard - though it was someone else's commentary

I watched that in a pub in Munich.

Owen actually scored twice in the last couple of minutes. I was surrounded by Germans, they weren't best pleased...

That night, I went to see the Arctic Monkeys in the Atomic Café. It was just before they'd released their first single.

It was mental in the ground. Great atmosphere. We were still celebrating equsliser when the winner went in.

Jurgen Klinsmann's first game for Spurs, 20th August 1994, he scored the winner after 82 minutes, in front of over 34,000!

Lovely Day

Real Madrid 4-3 Espanyol, 2007, night before Wigan sent us down. Raul was amazing, Carlos too. They needed to win as were head to head with Barca for title. Madrid were 3-1 down at one point. Reyes (I think) got the winner in front of us. Flew back Sunday morning, back in Sheffield and out drinking for the match and then watched us go down! One extreme to the other

West ham 2-5 Barnsley Tuesday night 1987 ,Milk cup replay.
Went with a few mates ,obviously in the Barnsley end .Great night

I have always wanted to visit a lower league Scottish ground ,stenhousemuir is the one .Was always fascinated after years of listening to the football results on the BBC at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon

I was also at that match. Probably the most stressful I've been to. Got chatting to Burnley fans inside the ground ( all from Halifax) who reassured me that no way would Hull get three. I believe Hull'scored almost straight away, and then not long after got their second. All the Burnley fans turned away from me , embarrassed as they were.
Bloody awful experience that match.

About 25 years ago they were featured by the BBC in a short documentary on a match day when lots of Nordic fans had come to support them. They felt they had an affinity, a connexion with the club. Stenhousemuir, appartently means " Stone, house wall" in Norwegian or something

My dad went to that one

I saw Bayern beat Forest 5-1 at the City ground. Klinsman scored a cracker. I'd forgotten about that match. What year was it ? My daughter was going out with a Florist fan at the time. All terrible racists, I was embarrassed by and for them

19/3/1996

spanich copa del rey final 2004
held in the olympic stadium Barcelona where Espanyol had just moved to , they've since moved to new more regular stadium
But the final was between Real Zaragoza and Real Madrid, and Maderid were heavy favorites especially when Beckham scored a wonder free kick to give them the lead but backed by a tremendous following Zaragoza who I was amongst snatched a 3-2 win in what was probably the most open game Ive ever been at. Bth teams had over 25 attempts at goal, the keepers both made loads of last ditch saves and the passing and skill was superb ., 3 stunning goals

The celebration down the Ramblas that night in Barcelona were even better

Bloody awful experience that match.
I put that experience alongside classic turnrounds, like the wonderful celebrations after Pesky's goal against Forest, and Duffy's bounce-killer moment after the despair of the Wendy equaliser and us thinking we were gonna lose after being 2 up. Being 2-0 down at home to Newcastle and turning it round to 3-2 after most of our fans had trudged off home was another amazing feeling I remember as a young 'un. To really feel the buzz of the highs, you need the lows; you need to be able to roll with both.
It also helps during moments of despair, like the Wigan fans celebrations at the end of our Premier league venture, to think then (as I remember doing) that sometime in the future we'll be looking down on you lot. My favourite memories include us singing "Always look on the bright side of life" to our illustrious neighbours, and it's a song we should reflect on now.
