This is a difficult one as the overwhelming favourites for the best squad position - Jags and Monty - are already there under other numbers. Thus, on this one, if you vote for these two, you need to also post in the thread your 2nd and 3rd choice. On the likely case that these two get first and second, I will allocate the squad place to someone else with the most points on the following basis: 3 points for a first choice, 2 for a 2nd choice and 1 for a third choice.

The only joke candidate here is Hendrie. He got the 17 shirt at the beginning of 2009-10, but never played in it. If you vote for him your vote will be disallowed unless you post a reasoned justification in the thread.

Players played under other numbers as follows:

Asaba: no. 2001-03
Jagielka: no. 40 2000, no. 21 2000-01, no.6 2004-07
Bromby: no. 2 2005-08, no.32 2009, no. 21 2009
Montgomery: no.36 2000-01, no. 22 2001-02, no.12 2002-03, no. 4 2003-05 and 2009-12
Hendrie: no. 11 2007-09

An update on the 16 and 15 will follow...

I voted for Jags. My 2nd choice is Monty and 3rd Bromby.

Voted for Asaba for his goal at the sty.

This is daft. Surely it is more sensible not to include anyone who is already in the squad at a lower number.

That will need to some odd results, perhaps, though none odder than Monty being in the squad at all.

I could do that, but I wanted to see what the most popular player in each squad number was despite the duplication. However, if the consensus is to exclude people already in, I will do that.

Let me know what you all think.

1 Jags, 2 Monty, 3 Katchouro (saw him score in a 1-0 win v pompey, with my pompey-supporting mate, so it was a special goal!)

Can we have your 2nd and 3rd choice Bath Blade...

Sorry, goes to show that no matter how big and bold you write "READ THE FIRST POST" there will always be some that don't (me)!

2nd: Asaba for that goal at Hillsborough as mentioned by others.
3rd: Katchouro as the next best of an extremely bad bunch.

1, Jags
2, Monty
3, Bromby

Using the patented JD "did they win anything" technique, Bromby comes out comfortably ahead of the others.

EDIT - Oh, bollocks. He wasn't in that shirt when we got promoted. But I'll stick with him anyhow.

I voted for Jags.

My 2nd choice is Monty
My 3rd choice is Bromby

Darren - is there a particular reason that you have used a zero in the abbreviation of Number in the title?? Or is it just to annoy those of us who notice these things???

I loved Kat man but I think his best games were before squad numbers so I went for Cresswell.

If you look at the keyboard, you will see that o and 0 are very near each other and when you type them they come out virtually identical. I keep typing the wrong one and don't notice until the post comes up...

The right answer is obviously Jagielka. But I voted Asaba as I actually preferred his initial spell to when he switched to 9.

Katchouro's best was before they had squad numbers, Hendrie never wore 17, Bromby was rubbish whatever he was wearing, Cresswell had a few decent games, Coady looks bobbins so far, but since Monty is already in the squad as 4 and Jags was clearly better, Monty is getting no votes, so could end up in the Nightmare squad as 17, even though his performances as 17 were probably some of his better ones.

Thats the sort of attention to detail we need from our legal profession... :D

I vote for excluding people already in, its a bit confusing otherwise.

I went for Cressy, never shirked, scored some goals in the champ in his first season and was a great partner for Ched in the first yr in league 1. I will always remember Jags and monty for wearing others nos.

Katchouro, just because he was my favourite player as a kid and it's his only chance of getting in the dream team.

Think I'm going to have to sit this one out. Jags is the right answer, but was better in his other shirt number and so rightly in the squad under that. The rest were either better in other numbers, or shouldn't be anywhere near the 'Best' squad.

But remember these are polls with a dual purpose. Not only are we defining our best squad, but also a nightmare squad.

Excluding those that are already in the best squad, denies them the opportunity to appear in the nightmare squad...

I think there is a cunning plan here to get Monty in the nightmare squad. Remember his stint as no.17 covers his time in the promotion and PL season. I can't believe anyone would think him worse than Hendrie's bench and reserve stint in August 2009 and Mr Coady this season...

It's certainly not my plan.

Find me a player that has so consistently devided the opinion of our fanbase since 1999 other than Monty.

I think its quite possible that, enough of our fanbase think he is useless enough to get into the nightmare squad on his own "merit" without any cunning plan.

Anyway, where is the update for 15 and 16 you promised us an hour and a half ago???

I would have voted for Jags at '17', as I thought '6' should easily have gone to James Beattie (at that number), but since he's already in the squad, I've gone for Asaba, just beating Kat & Bromby.

Have patience...

If someone votes for Monty in this poll, he will then be excluded from the nightmare poll.

It is better not to have Hendrie on the field than to have Monty on it.

I voted for Monty, if only to keep him out of the nightmare squad and also to drive Pinchy apoplectic with rage, because it's funny. This of course will be taken to mean all sorts of bollocks.

Cresswell if not Monty, and then Katchouro as third choice.
