3rd Div promotion season (84)
Not especially a quality goal but (proved to be) extremely significant given we went up on goal difference
Just afore or just after Arnott also got a last minute (1-0) winner @ Sarfend ran from midfield dancing round a couple hundred opponents afore rolling it in on a a pitch akin to A1 half way through refurbishment.
For significance Edwards ( (courageous 😳) header in Bank holiday 3-1 loss @ Bolton has to be most important (ever?) - came home thinking we’d fucked promotion until ‘ull played & lost (to Port Vale ?) that evening
(Very) Thin margins🤔
Well remembered. 👍 I recall the Atkins goal being a volley or half volley from the edge of the area through a crowded penalty area.

The Arnott goal was special too, not Ndiaye good, but heavier pitches, tackling allowed, so possibly on Ndiaye level.

Edwards goal was very brave and he got kicked in the head for his trouble. I came back from Bolton thinking the same. The goal was crucial in setting up the nail biting finish (and a night listening and pacing up and down to Radio Sheffield) whilst Burnley beat Hull allowing the Blades to seal the deal.

Happy days. 38 years ago !!!! And a lifetime ago.

Thanks again and well remembered 👍👍

Terry Currans goal against us completely did me in. I was in the South Stand next to several small but very obnoxious cuntoxious groups of Wednesday fans who were giving the monkey chant whenever Sabella was on the ball. We scored and they all sat quietly and behaved until then. What a goal though.

Worst / best season of my life - as you say the conclusion was nail- biting to say the least.
Despite that bank holiday Monday defeat ‘ull were still in the driving seat to go up but drew @ home in their 45th game same day we won 2-0 in our final game setting up that (in) famous Burnley v ‘ull match the following midweek (imagine the furore if that was allowed today)
Court attendance in morning (long story) & then over the hill to Burnley
Like you I spent most of the game pacing up & down once ‘ull went 2up with plenty of time to net the crucial 3rd (last 20 minutes behind the main Stand) along with about 300 other Blades - found a ‘lock in’ on the way back home - reckon the landlord made enough to retire immediately next morning.
Also just for resonance, the first month of ‘The Miners Strike’
‘appy days 🤔

There is no footage of the game, sadly. No club video, and there was no TV football early that season due to a dispute between the football league and the TV cos.

Everyone says this equaliser (by John Lowey) was rolling to Burridge but I think that’s wrong. It was a long range shot that was airborne and hit him on the left arm/shoulder and went in. Terrible error all the same
I was right behind the goal on the kop and I seem to recall it was a speculative shot to the middle of the goal, it was airborne although quite low in flight and distinctly remember Budgie being on one knee anticipating a low bounce into his arms, however the ball bounced unevenly higher than he thought, and hit him on the shoulder on it's way past him.

Not only was this a fantastic goal, Blackburn fans are still sick about it a week later 😂

Can almost taste the tears

I am sure that was Luton at home, we won 4:0. Did the ball get stuck in the mud at the Bramall Lane end?
Won 4-1. Stainrod scored the first two at the Lane End then later in the 1st half he rounded the keeper before rolling the ball towards the empty net then he celebrated thinking he had clinched his hat trick but the ball got stuck in the mud before it crossed the line and a Luton defender cleared the ball away

Were the Millwall and luton games around a similar time frame?
I seem to remember 2 big wins, either back to back, or close on, Mick Speight scoring a cracking volley in one.

I wasnt at the Millwall game when we won 5-2 (Stainrod scored once) on March 18th which was before the start of Easter school holidays. A week later I was at the Luton game (Easter Saturday) with my cousins David and John

My first ever game. All I remember was the rain.

45 years ago today.

Phil Jagielka's goal against Middlesbrough in the last minute for the first win of the season has got to be up there for me!
I brought junior over for Chelsea game , next home game ,
but ticket office said I had to buy tickets for another/ that home game as well
So bought tickets for both Boro / Chelsea game
If only we could score penalties

FA Cup 1975 United v Bristol City rocket from CURRIE he hit it from about 25/30 yards into top left hand corner of the goal at Lane End watching it go in from the Kop that day looked like a rocket

Aesthetically it was Lee Evans. But I was getting another pint in at the Cremorne and missed it

another tc goal was my favourite against leeds in league cup drilled it in all along the deck past sprake from 25 yards out at the lane end sept 70 we hammered them that night and should have won by more than 1 goal
