Renew early = discount. January Sales = discount.
Would you have the shops hold their sale open just for you? Do you demand a ferry waiting at Dover on the off chance you might want a trip to France one day? Renew late = pay full whack. What makes you special enough to renew whenever you fancy it? Unless of course you are special and different other than just posting in the third person.
SV doesn't think so, but SV had the presence of mind to renew early.
Sheffield United season ticket purchase does not = DFS Sale opening hours. Deadline gone. Them's the breaks.
My experience of making major purchases from a shop is that they are actually very flexible on price, sale or no sale.
£1100 is a lot of money. I think that qualifies as a major purchase. It equates to a nice 3 piece suite, or a very high quality piece of hi fi equipment. You can even get a fairly tidy old second hand car for that money. Almost without exception you will get a discount on the advertised price.

Would you have, say, Debenhams or John Lewis hold some of their stock back for those who couldn't make the January sales? And as JohnDenver says, what do you say to the bloke behind bert in the queue? Or the bloke behind him? Either the deadline stands, for everyone, or there is no point in having one. What about those who renewed early?
If you made an offer on something costing over £1000 at any of those shops outside of any sale dates, I am pretty confident they would be prepared to compromise on the price.

considering Deadline was 17th April and it now 2nd June did Bert think his couple of weeks holiday excuse didn't have any f***ing flaws in it
It doesn't seem to me that Bert was making an excuse. If I remember rightly he states in his initial post that missing the deadline was his own fault. He was just making the point that the club is now at least £1100 down by being inflexible (and in my opinion by not operating in the same way as many other retail businesses).

On that basis I'd be interested to know if, when Bert goes to Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose or wherever, whether, as a businessman., he tries to negotiate the price down on every item he takes through the checkout and, if he does, how many supermarkets he has been banned from
In Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose etc you are making numerous very low value purchases. Bert was offering to make a high value purchase. Go to any furniture store, car forecourt, electrical retailer etc, show interest in something for that price and I'm sure you're odds on to get a discount.

Interesting point. I suppose it depends what sort of person you are. I think a lot of people (me included), would find it pretty to draining to be always looking to save a few quid on every purchase. Other people obviously thrive on it. The latter tend to be rich
It's not every purchase. I don't think anyone (Bert included) is arguing that they would ask for discounts for small , everyday purchases like those you make at supermarkets. SE10 Blades is talking about major purchases of the sort you only make once in a while.

No, but they might choose to not go at all.[

I'd say the club showed some great business acumen. A club in free-fall managed to sell over 10,000 season tickets before the inevitable relegation was confirmed. They're probably rubbing their hands as we speak.
Ah, but it could have been 10003!
