This is fairly common practice everywhere, isn't it? They call it "Gaudie Night" at St Andrews and Dundee. The "parents" take the fresher out or cook them dinner or something. Later in the term, the fresher returns the favour, which is "Raisin weekend".

Theire certainly didn't do it when me and Crouchy were at university so maybe it is a new thing. Like proms and celebrating Halloween. I blame the Americans (or possibly Thatcher).

BarcaBlade is feeling inspired and nostalgic enough about the old days enough to make a posting. He also has mixed feelings about the original point having watched sex-tourists wander into a bar asking how much a bottle of absinthe would cost to be told the cumulative cost of the individual shots within the bottle and then walking out of the bar with his money still in his pockets. When BarcaBlade asked the barman why he didn't sell it for a 200% mark up on the cost of a bottle and then replace the bottle the next day pocketing the difference, he was staggered by the unimaginative response that 'it's the price'.

BarcaBlade rarely makes any high value purchases in the Czech Republic because of their inability to grasp that they would be better off taking 90% of the cost price and having it in their pockets than allowing me to spend it in Britain (often at 70 or 80% of the price).

In BarcaBlade's business, we make up prices all the time to ensure that money ends up coming our way. We are lucky to not be trapped in a controlled environment and all staff members know that they are in a position to make decisions for themselves. If they see a profit, they take (and maximize it). If they don't, they maybe come and ask for advice.

That said, when it comes to football, BarcaBlade is a bit of a numpty. Having decided to boycott his favourite Czech team's home games due to their forced move to a rival's stadium, he paid for a season ticket anyway, didn't go, and then started going to games, but didn't use the season ticket anyway and just bought a new ticket to be in a more entertaining section of the ground. BarcaBlade does not believe that paying to watch football is a good use of money, but does like going to games to meet up with people.

BarcaBlade should also point out that this flagrant throwing of money about does not intend to imply any great wealth and that prices in Czech Republic for football are fine. BarcaBlade maintains a healthy work-life balance, did not gain a degree and does not envisage retirement any time soon, though did enjoy today's schedule of a brunch meeting (11am start) which turned into a card tournament followed by time to read the entirety of this thread.

In summary, BarcaBlade reckons Bert's a bit sore about not getting his own way.

A "healthy work-life balance" eh? WASTER ALERT!!

Well the Dundee Uni thing dates back to when it was still part of St Andrews. They didn't break off until 1967. I'm fairly sure St Andrews has been doing it for a lot longer than that.

Never heard of it before. But since my alma mater was De Montfort in Leicester that doesn't surprise me.
