“It might not be up to us, what happens, and it might not even be up to him."

Well if its not upto him, and its not upto us, who the fuck is it upto?!

He is either referring to 'us' as the management team, implying that Berge may be sold by the board against their wishes

Or my initial instinct was an overruling agent that has some sort of mind control over Sande and will dictate where he plays

I think we are all sensible enough to know money has to be raised. Every relegated side does it, and we are going down this year without the money from last 12 months tickets sales, ground sponsorship and other commercial revenue - this season more than ever the gap in the books will be bigger than ever

However, I hope we can fill the gap with sales outside of Ramsdale, JoC, Egan, Berge & Brewster*

IMO if we can keep that spine on the field, with some astute acquisitions** we have a good chance of doing what Norwich, Watford and quite possibly Bournemouth have just done, and come straight back up.

If its a rogue agent who tells 'his boy' where to play, then I hope the Prince invites him over to his homeland, and 'explains' how these sorts of people can be dealt with over there.

* not sure if theres more that 10 bobs worth
** can someone kidnap CW for this period to ensure no interference

I sispect you're reading too much into the words taken from PH's live interview i.e. not a cleverly worded press release.

Here's the bottom line - Berge and his reps won't want him to play in the Champ; the club see him as a good way to raise funds and reduce the budget over selling lots of other assets and there are a number of potential suitors for his services out there. This all leads to the very high likelihood that he'll be sold over summer.

He won’t play another game for us is my prediction and he won’t be here at the start of next season. I’ve no problem with that, as long as we get a decent fee for him and that money goes towards players for next season.
Thought that for months mate , I think he feels he is too precious to risk all in nothing games for us.....I think he will look back on us as a shit stain on his career ...
I don't know him personally so I could be totally wrong ....
My estimate is 12 to 16 million .....

Surely just referencing a release clause on relegation which is expected to be met?

Best we can hope for Berge is he is fit by season end and impresses to encourage a bidding war beyond our release clause, real shame Norway won’t be in the euros.

Failing that we’ll have to rely on our board being competent enough to have negotiated a high relegations clause....

I think we’d do a lot better on the fee than £12m-£16m. He’s one of the few members of our current squad who you could see playing for a top half prem team. I would think we’d be looking for a decent return on the £22m we reportedly paid.

Surely he could turn that down though, if he wanted? He wouldn't be forced to move just because the clause is met (I never expect nor want him to stay, I just mean meeting the amount in the clause doesn't automatically trigger a transfer).

As said above it's probably just reading too much in to an unrehearsed answer from Heckingbottom.

I can't see how in any shape or form that he's justified his 22 million price tag , added to the fact he's coming back from a long term injury ...

I certainly wouldnt want to be paying 30m for a player who has had a very serious injury. It's very unfortunate for us that our 2 most valuable assets are in exactly the same situation. A fully fit JOC and Berge would have raised 60-80m between them.

Over rated as fuck. Keep Egan and O'Connell and I'm happy.
I respectfully disagree. Hard for him to shine when the rest of the midfield have been so abject all season. He’s got genuine class and in a better side he would be more than capable of holding his own. I don’t think there are too many others in our squad you could say that about.

agreed, even if he is fit, we will be protecting our asset by keeping him out for the next fews games, which are essentially pointless

Agree with this. I hope the Man City rumour is true, would be good to see him reach his full potential in a team like that.

Jeez, you think?

If he's got a release clause it's not up to us or Berge I guess.

If he has a release clause it’s not up to us

But it is up to Berge himself, if the release clause was met by Astana who currently top the Khazakstan league who he go?

He can respectfully reject any offer and see out his contract

Seems a decent bloke, maybe he will feel having took a wage for months whilst injured and seeing the team relegated he may feels like he owes us till the JTW to see if we are top 6 and make a call then?

May benefit both parties as will prove his fitness so maybe we can generate a larger fee

We'll make our money back with Berge and if there's a decent well-on then eventually make a profit.

I can't see us getting more than we paid for him due to the fact we've been relegated and he has been injured.

I read somewhere Genk have a 20% sell on clause , not sure if his release clause becomes active because of relegation but if so it maybe the amount we paid less the 20% which then it would probably work out around 18m . Hope not but this wasn't expected to happen when he signed so we may have been protecting ourselves with his wages .utb

I don’t think that a release clause can force a player to move if he doesn’t want to. It is therefore partly SB’s decision.
The release clause is to protect the player from having to stat where he doesn’t want to.

As I said in the rumours thread about him, this is such a sad story. When he signed I genuinely thought we were entering a new era in our history, and he would be one of the shining stars in that transition. Young, talented, hungry player, scouted by all the "big boys" in Europe, yet we somehow managed to sign him. We were pushing for Europe (how daft does that sound now!!?) and had we made it, I think he would have been the first of several similar-calibre players that we acquired.

Feel for the lad...must have been truly awful for him what happened last year. Moved to a foreign country then almost immediately forced to stay at home, no socialising or proper bonding with his new teammates, unable to visit his family etc. No amount of money in the world will properly make up for that.

I'm resigned to him going in summer, but I would at least hope that if there is a "relegation clause" in his contract then it stipulates that we don't make a loss on him. He's got the potential to be a top, top player and any fee we receive should reflect that imho.

Think with better players around him will look the class player he is. Our most saleable asset and will help offset losses on some others (Mouse, Burke Freeman etc). Rather sell and bring in 2 or 3 midfield players who will improve the team as a whole.

Bit of a non event story though CW said only way they could get him was to have certain conditions in place and one will definitely be a release clause on relegation so its not upto anyone club/board/manager its down to the player/Agent and his contract.

No ones allowed an opinion on a board thats about opinions....Funny that

I am not a moderator, and even if I was I wouldn't stop you posting an opinion. But we are allowed to question each other's opinions and statements.

I have heard this before about Berge, i.e that he will look back on his time here negatively, or that he will somehow regret the move. Personally, I question the logic of that.

Like you I don't know him, am never likely to, nor have I even spoken to the kid. But he has never struck me as anything less than committed and very happy to be part of the club. Had he not come to us, he would still be stuck at Genk, because no other PL club looked like making a move for him at the time ( a few rumours about Liverpool, but nothing concrete) and it certainly wouldn't have happened post lockdown.

He has had a chance to play in the PL, on more money than he was earning before, and put himself in the window for a much bigger move. Plus the coverage and fanfair at the time of his arrival must have been the stuff of dreams for a young player.

My take would be that he might see it as an opportunity missed, in terms of the club just missing out on Europe, and undoubtedly like all of us he will want to strike this season from his memory as soon as possible. But the whole experience has been far from a disaster for him.

I agree and it is just possible that he has an affinity for the Blades that would keep him here for next season.
That would enable him to get match fit again and showcase himself in a winning team (?) to either return with us to the Premiership or get a transfer.
All is not necessarily lost.
