Have watched the highlights from last night (as disappointing as everything else was) one thing is particularly bothering me. When we're chasing a game in the final couple of minutes could someone explain to me why we have Matt Done as our last man, or in other words, the furthest outfield player from their goal!

Now I appreciate we had a corner so naturally sent the big CB's up for it, but it just staggers me that we can't find someone else to stick on the halfway line.

When we originally signed this guy he was banging them in for Rochdale and looked a real attack minded player. I remember watching him at home in one of his first games for us, can't remember who it was against (someone feel free to remind me). The opposition had a corner which Harris volleyed clear leaving Done one on one with their last man, never had a second thought other than head down and sprint to their goal before burying it across the keeper.

While he might not have turned into the 20 goal a season player we were hoping for, I can't believe we don't want him in or around the penalty/6 yard box when we have a corner in the last minute.

That was bothering me too. I understand why they move CBs upfront like you say but he shouldn't be back there. He's a poacher, he's good at being the right place at the right time and should be in the box when we have set pieces at the end or just crossing it in.

Flynn was meandering around as well. Who would you have put back there?

Pace in case of a break. Sadly he got done for it himself. Anyone else it would have been even easier.

It was a corner so the "big" lads were sent up and weedy Matt was left to deal with the break if this master plan didn't work. Fair to say that could have gone better, it must have taken a while to untangle Done's legs after Payne had finished with him.

I've been complaining about this for three games. Unless Done is taking a right wing corner he drops right back. To pair him with Flynn is even dafter.

In open play he doesn't commit within 30 yards of the opposition goal unless carrying the ball takes him there. Modern coaches sometimes disappear up their own arse they're so clever.

As you say Done is a goalscorer and in fact a six yard box poacher. BTW given a full season up top I think he'd get 20 goals in this league.

We have actually bought another numpty of a footballer and our present coaching staff have made him worse during his time here.

As for Flynn in the position of left side in a midfield three just beggars belief.

The only credit for the management three of Adkin/Wilkins and Crosby is that they have continued to try different things all season.

The players are just fucking useless, but the management trio have failed miserably in making any of them better footballers.

Be very careful what "WE" wish for next season in keeping Mr "tinkerman" Adkins - alternatively, we should get rid of EVERY single one who is out of contract.................lets be right we lost to Southend last night...... be ruthless to the present players, including Done and possibly to Adkins et al too.

Adkins says he wants a settled side so I don't think he wants to be fiddling around all the time. There was a run of games through winter where we didn't change at all. I think this chopping and changing has come from desperation. I mean, he's stuck with a set of players who aren't good enough and he's fiddling around in the hope that something will just click and I don't blame him. I haven't got any better ideas. I'd be more pissed off if we stuck with the same thing like we did last year with stubborn Clough.

Sadly Beatle, this is a considerably worse situation we are in than 12 months ago. Clough is a terrible manager but Adkins utterly clueless.
No he's not. Adkins has a much more difficult situation to Clough. No money, high expectations, players who don't care. Clough had high expectations but at least he had a budget.

Given we needed a win and 2 goals to get it, no one. I don't get why everyone sticks to convention like one man back and putting a wall up etc. Just roll with the situation.

We need 2 goals so bang everyone in the box. Payne would have dropped back if we'd done they anyway.

Done has been played out of position most of the season, at the game last night Sharp on more than one occasion was on his own goal line defending. Until they scored the second goal we had 2 great chances to go 3-1 up Sharp tried to volley instead of smashing it, which looked a better option and Che one touch to many. Once they scored the second goal our heads dropped, and to finish us off the subs Sammon and Coutts which tells us all a story. The highlight was when Hammond scored and the Blades singing " You must be shite you let Hammond score, followed by give him a long term contract, and most disappointing was they did not sell beer to away fans.

With regards to the OP I'd say poor management from Adkins again. Defensively, Done is getting exposed all the time in that left wing back position (not his fault, he's a forward - didn't Barnsley play him at left-back and he was awful there), so to put him as last man on our corner was a joke. McEveley should have been last man, there were plenty of other so called big 'uns up for the corner. If it drops in the box I'd rather have if fall to Done than McEveley or one of the other defenders.

Just another example of Adkins not getting the balance right for me.

Did the players care? If not, why not? Has super Scouser improved matters?

and, if a breakaway occurs, I would be more confident of Captain dropping the hammmer on said attacker, and ending the incursion prompty, with a yellow as the price.

No third goal
