I would like to know how many on hear will go into proper melt down if the pigs get promoted and will are still playing league one football next season. I suspect some couldn't give a shit but I also know many will be proper pissed off so which will you be? As trust me it could happen.

I really care about what you think DP.

Nothing puts a united manager under greater pressure than the pork doing well.
I could probably deal with them being in the premiership because they certainly wouldn't do a Leicester any time soon, but the summer after they'd just been promoted would be horrendous.

Daft as it seems IF SWFC did get into the Premiership they could do a Leicester . Sustainability in the premiership is another ball game . The bigger infuriating thing is that SUFC could also achieve exactly the same. Our issue and big problem , we just do not seem to be able to get out of league 1. Adkins is the man for the championship / premiership. There is no reason he is not the guy to get us out of this league , sooner rather than later.

I take your point, and it's certainly not the situation I'd like to see...

The abject misery however is palpable.

Like I say, it's not just the bragging rights that would give me low bowel cramp. It's the likes of Shearer, Lawrenson and the other shitwipes giveing their post-match referring to them as 'Sheffield'. So, in that instance, the pigs success does actually define us. It makes us insignificant.

The money is indeed higher in the top-flight these days, but it's higher for everyone. So in effect, the clubs already established in the Premiership will still have greater pulling power in terms of transfers and wage bills. If the Pigs were to achieve promotion this season, they'd still be facing a hard slog at the foot of the table, all thats changed is the scale.

And I've never really accepted the argument that the most successful team gets the lions share of future support. In Sheffield, the divide is a sharp one, almost sectarian.
I can only point to my own experience on this. I was a young kid in the early 90's and the Pigs were the dominant club, and it was horrible. They won the League Cup, the finished 5th in the top flight and they briefly had a dabble in Europe. United meanwhile were going backwards (for a change).
But you're a product of your environment, and by that time my love for United and hatred of that lot was already ingrained, and circumstance can never change it.

I can see why you'd see my indifference to the Pigs fortunes as burying my head in the sand, but it's happened over time. Over the years I've come to realise that United are a very self-contained community, a dysfunctional family if you like, and it becomes central to your culture. It's your friends and the people you meet, its the places you frequent. It's a shared history and a way of life. All fanbases have this to an extent but very few have it like ours, and I'm convinced of that. Sheffield United plays some part in my life every day, and I believe it's that way for thousands of others.. Whether I'm on here, or at the match or with my mates in the pub or pretty much any conversation that I have from day to day. I'm as I said on my previous post "immersed in Bladesdom" even if it is a bloody miserable world right now.

The Pigs don't define who we are, and no matter what they do, it won't change how you or I feel about either them or us. So all that's left to do is carry on regardless.

"....If the Pigs were to achieve promotion this season, they'd still be facing a hard slog at the foot of the table...."

I actually don't think they would Tyler, I can see them going up and staying up, they have some decent players already and would add to that.

"...So all that's left to do is carry on regardless...."

I have to agree with that, we can't influence the future and fortune of the pigs, so we can only carry on supporting the Blades, so get a cuppa, get curled up on the sofa, and stick a "carry on" film on!

I honestly think they will go up this season, they have been very smart with the players they have acquired, and to think they were only hours away from going under for good, when Milan sent his representative to buy them at the last minute.

I don't get much stick from the pig fans I know, but it is hard when we are having a pint after football when one of them says "how did you do today? Draw? oh nice one, who were you playing? Rochdale? oh ok".

Not slagging off Rochdale by the way, it could be any one of the olde worlde north west places (Port Vale, Crewe, Oldham) or somewhere closer to home like Scunthorpe, Barnsley, Doncaster.....

When I was a little lad, there was a natural order to things, so the bigger the town/city you lived in, the higher the likelihood that your team would be successful and higher up the divisions, because your potential catchment area and gate would bring in revenue that smaller towns/teams could not compete with. TV money, amongst other things, has changed all that, these days all we have to smile about is the fact that our gate is bigger than most championship gates, week in, week out, and where has it got us? It has got us to "just outside the top 6 in division three", a division we just cannot get out of.
It changed after Blackburn really. That seemed to be the catalyst. Then rich, usually self made, local blokes started trying to buy success as football post 1990 became popular again.
I suspect we're approaching the end of the cycle, that the money clubs will receive at the top level is unsustainable. The majority of clubs will be dependent on TV money and if that drops suddenly then a lot of clubs will be in the shit.
It might actually be beneficial for us to stay in L1/Championship for the next few seasons and make sure we don't over stretch ourselves.
It's worth remembering the pigs are just as good as us at fucking things up.

People have been saying the bubble is about to burst since 1992. Actually they were probably saying it in 1892.

I think they'd be called Wednesday in the main. Not that I give two shits about Shearer and Lawro. And if they were saying 'that's another bad defeat for Sheffield' I'd be laughing too much to be offended.

I remember having a similar discussion about the economy in about 2006, during Gordon Brown's attempt to end boom and bust.

6th in the Championship and they never shut up about it.

I can only remember them being this annoying a few times before.

Rumbelows cup win.
Top of prem for 12 games.
93 semi.
League 1 promotion.

There genuinely are at least 1 maybe 2 generations of pigs that have never been near Wembley. Never seen a cup semi final and the best they have ever been in their scruffy little lives is 6th in the championship.

Yes we have nothing to show for anything in my lifetime but I've seen us play at Wembley 5 times, Millennium Stadium once + 2 league cup semi finals. They would never admit it but I'm sure some of the pigs are envious of our 'days in the sunshine'.

But yes, to answer the OP. I can't bear the thought of being 2 divisions apart.

Play off weekend could be interesting if we're both there

Cardiff playoff final was not our day in sunshine. FFS all that hard work throughout the season and it was for nothing. 45 minutes and the whole season was over, throw in a penalty miss for Brown, once that was saved you just knew it wasn't our day.

It was quite sunny though.

Top level sport has thus far proved immune from the normal economic cycle, with the possible exception of the effects of the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Nothing lasts forever though.

Is there an "agree" button, because I do completely but I defiantly don't "like" it :D

That's not true though is it? Football was on its arse in the eighties.
And English football has never been so dependent on foreign money as it is now.
Look at Serie A between 1990 and 2010.

As you say, nothing lasts forever.

Can't say that I haven't thought about it and yes, it would certainly piss me off.

It's very frustrating and fact is, if you go back only a few seasons - to when we were both neck and neck in league 1, you would have struggled to get a sheet of paper between us. IMO despite being the better footballing side, as we know 'bad luck' and some bizarre events went against us and whilst they succeeded in muscling their way out we stayed put.

The real angst for me (and I'm afraid it continues) is having to sit by and watch the progress of both clubs since. The difference is marked and whilst they have not had it all their own way by any means, looking at the relative position of both clubs right now, the quality of the playing staff and their immediate prospects, the clubs I'm afraid are poles apart.

It's hugely depressing for me and probably lots of other Blades fans too. Feels like miss-management on a significant scale on our part and certainly, a lack of ambition and know how. Who's fault is it? Is it any one persons fault or can we simply lay the blame at the feet of the board? Perhaps it's nobody's fault - just poor luck on our part and good luck on theirs (kismet).

Either way though, it doesn't half piss me off!

When we went down into L1 our 'rivals' West Ham were relegated from the PL. They didn't fuck about, they got the manager most likely to get them back up and backed him. We got Danny Wilson.
We have had some bad luck but 75% of our misfortune can be blamed on the people running the club.

Full circle for me. They went up under Wilko when we were in the third.

Wilko took them up to the 1st division in 1984 but we also got promotion (to the 2nd) that year too. The only season they were two divisions above us was 1988-89 after we got relegation to the 3rd. We were two divisions above them in 1975-76.

I hate saying this but the wendies are light years ahead of us, it is plain and simple really. It is hypothetical but if we played them now we'd more than likely get fucking hammered and I for one don't like that feeling.

I'm not saying they haven't supported Adkins at all but this is the season that our board had a Chance to support Adkins fully, by getting all the required services to get us out, due to the financial complications if we were to get in the Championship, where the board would be limited. They treat us like mugs who know fuck all regarding this matter, when it is quite clear you can't pump money in willy nilly in the Championship, whereas you can more or less in League one. They have put us in this predicament, no one else.

I won't lose sleep over it but neither will our board members. It sort of sums up how far our ambition is, away, from them cunts down the fucking road.

I live about 5000 Kms from Sheffield. I quit Facebook last year so I have no connection with my old Sheffield friends who support the pigs. I literally have no one gloating or bragging about them vs us. However, I absolutely hate them with a passion.. I NEVER want them to do well as there isn't a team I hate more in the world.

I love the Blades. That's all.

When the pigs go up this season, it will prove they are the jammiest cunts in league football. The rules changed at the start of the season, allowing championship clubs to spend further beyond their means and avoid punishment. Also the new TV deal starts next season, so guess who are nailed on to drop for it. Look at previous times when they've weaseled their way out of a crisis, co-op bank writing off their debt, Mandaric saving them from administration, their last promotion.
Jammiest cunts on earth. I have money on it happening.

Wilko took them up to the 1st division in 1984 but we also got promotion (to the 2nd) that year too. The only season they were two divisions above us was 1988-89 after we got relegation to the 3rd. We were two divisions above them in 1975-76.
I stand corrected.

The day I can't handle the pigs crowing is the day I travel to Switzerland for a life exit. I love it when they try to take the piss
because they really are poor at it. Long way to go before they get 2 divs above us though. They looked good on the break
against Leeds but very poor at the back. If Leeds weren't so bad they would have won easy.

Will it happen? Perhaps but most likely next season as I think there are several teams better than them right now. I don't see them getting near the autos this season, Boro and I think Derby will run away with them and I would honestly back any of Burnley, Hull, Ipswich, Brum, Brighton to stuff them in the play offs, assuming they even get there. 20 games to go and I also think they are potentially 1 injury (Forrestieri) away from dropping off the pace.

If the worst does happen however and they do go up in May, it would of course be bloody horrid for the first few weeks at least. I would advise every Blade to take a holiday, somewhere far away in order to avoid the following:

- the week long open top bus parade
- Michael Vaughan
- The State Banquet at the Town Hall
- Micheal Vaughan
- The 300 page Star pullout
- Michael Vaughan
- David phucking Garrido sliming all over your TV screen
- Radio Pig going into overdrive
- erm.........Michael Vaughan........oh and by the way Michael despite being a superb batsman, noone will be talking about you soon as the mighty Joe Root takes the mantle as the greatest ever Yorkshire Cricketer. At the end of the day, for all your cockeyness you are just an insecure, rug wearing, baldy prick!

Rant over, so yes it would be tough at first but would eventually die down and we would start enjoying our own season again. Anyway could anything be worse than 2012? That was hard phucking work to be sure and is still with me, so to speak.

Knowing our luck, they go up and a week later the CCRC overturn Ched's conviction. Imagine that, all of it down to a huge miscarriage of justice

That really would be the curly turd on top of the shit cake.

Nothing unites my family more than our hatred of Michael Vaughan. We spent a happy Christmas Eve discussing what a twat he is.

To be fair Bush.......Discussing what a twat Vaughan is would surely be a very short conversation. "Is he a twat!?"...."Yes". Next topic.........
Oh no. My dad's met him and my sister and brother in law are mates with a cricketer so we can go into a lot of detail about how and why he's a twat.
Then we all agree that he is indeed a massive rug wearing arrogant cock.

I used to see a lass who shared a flat with one of that rug-wearing piggies best mates. It was always "Vaughny this" "Vaughny that" - used to grate with me chronically...like having my eyeballs cleaned by a cheese grater..........then had the misfortune to be "introduced" to him outside Vodka Rev one night. Possibly the dullest 5 seconds I have ever had to endure.........thank God for alcohol is all I will say !!!
