Solid and sensible rather than owt else.
It’d be great if we could afford Cleary or Abdulmalik as an up and coming alternative.
Suspect we could afford Abdulmalik, even with the financial situation, but I'm not convinced CW would sanction a risk* at this point in time.

*Raw, not first team ready, will likely need a loan or U23 time. A rung below Donovan IMO. HUGE upside for a team willing to gamble, but it's a project, just like the last Boreham Wood player we fell in love with.

We’re competing with Stoke and Derby, the top 3rd of the table are busy looking at other players.

It’s not fans jobs to identify targets, that what your scouts and analysts are supposed to do. Fuck knows what we’re paying our lazy bastards for.
Not ITK but if I was in that scouts/analysts team, I genuinely would have an account set-up on a fans forum, especially one as proactive as this with so much traffic, hit the rumour section and have a brief look over the suggested targets and have a look at them. To probably quote CW "That's what the punters wanted, so we went out and got him on a free/loan/etc" I have no idea how many scouts and analysts we have within our club but imagine it's a team rather than 1 but when Championship stability was confirmed in about April this year, why wasn't there (there might have been) a board meeting, with CW and the team, this is our budget = £0, we need to offload £ to sign or you are looking at the free market. We should have been in on 15th June to start signing the transfers we needed, we knew our position financially and we knew our status in mid April, we literally had 8 weeks + worth of research.

We also had the manager stating in a presser ‘we know what we need in the summer’ - I can only guess that they were expecting some big sales that haven’t materialised so their first choices are out.

Which makes the pursuit of Phillips even more perplexing.

I’m not getting the feeling we’ve put any work into players beyond our original shortlist, and players on that shortlist are well known to the club.

He was crap second time around for us
Do we have any scouts at our club?
Aesthetically he didn’t look as good as he arrived with us lacking match fitness because he’d hardly been playing.

That being said he still managed 7 goal contributions across 1,010 minutes. That still a goal contribution every 144 minutes.

For Gus’ United Championship career he has a goal contribution every 165 minutes.

So however crap he was, in terms of scores on the doors, he still outperformed our best player.

Like a few have said, underwhelmed by the signing (if it happens?), but understand the reality of the current situation that the club is in.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised of the sale of Cannon on the back of this??
Why? 2 very different players

It really isn’t enjoyable😂 awful to watch
My kids play more entertaining football and I don’t have to pay £30 a game to watch it
That didn't answer his question to you though. Maybe you just enjoy infecting fellow Blades reading this with your own special variety of doom & gloom, if in fact you enjoy anything at all around SUFC?

It isn’t
We were never going to sign a like for like. But I agree don't think this is to fill a Hamer shaped void.

To be honest Hamer is a fairly unique player at championship level.

So to replace that creativity you are looking at an attacking midfielder or winger who has a good range of passing and goal threat.
Or as it more likely a winger like Donovan to compliment the other side. That Cozier-Duberry would be interesting. But canny see that.
Even this non league Abdumalik would be interesting. But I do feel with him, he could be a wildcard that could also just simply be too good for non league but nothing like ready for champ. Or he's on a path to better things.

There’s nothing positive about this signing
It’s a lazy backwards signing
Shows we don’t scout anyone

Lazy, backwards looking signing. We are going to find ourselves lumbered with assets taking a decent wage who will be impossible to move until their contract is up.

Wilder the man for the job given all the background noise, but signings like this really highlight his and our setups weaknesses
Or, now bare with me, he fulfills the most critical criteria we have, in our current position:

He's affordable, available and dare I say it, he's nudging the needle in the Quality direction too. Not to mention he know us, we know him, he's 'experienced', a mercurial quality CW values highly for our current group.

Just a thought.

I'd like us to go for Cleary/Abdumalik as well as.

But at this stage, we need some quality and some depth so he would meet that criteria.
Likewise, I'd love to see a genuinely dynamic, athletic, bums off seats talent and I think one that comes with a risk is the only way we'll see one this season.

It's a fair point, he's a steady signing and given our circumstances it's probably what we need, rather than gambling on a lower league player, I just worry that we will offer him a fairly lengthy contract on a decent wage, and that could be a problem as I think his best is behind him

Still nothing confirmed yet.
If he comes it's not exactly the inspirational signing we would have hoped for. Adequate at this level yes. But we've a squad full of adequate players at the moment. I suppose we're not even Aldi shopping now, more like Moor Market shopping. Hopefully there's a solid CB on one of the stalls
Time will tell I suppose if it's a good signing of an average one.

Please dont take this personally LBA but if you dont think the 2nd part of your paragrapgh actually happened then you are an absolute Plantpot.
This is their actual job and SUFC are a £70m plus T/O organisation.

Never take anything personal, if it's the bit about us knowing the budget we should have been onloading a lot early for an organisation our size. We knew the ins and outs

No offence to Bbd cos I think he’s a perfectly fine championship player if he’s on form.

But Where’s the ambition, why aren’t we swinging again for a prospect we’ve no chance of signing permanently - like a MGW or mcatee

The entire premier league and rest of the world available for us, thousands of players and we are going to end up using loan spots on Joe Worrell and BBD. That is a hopeless use of resources to me.
I suspect finance plays a major part in who we can realistically approach.
