Only radio Sheffield could do a local Derby preview with 3 Scotsmen

Hi Blades -- you can watch a special Steel City Derby show tonight from 6pm. Live guests include John Fleck & Tyrese Campbell.

Do us a favour and check it out via this link: bbc.in/4bLs7wk

It'd really help if you could check it out, the more people who watch some of it, the more we can do some creative things in the future.

Many thanks!

Is it going to be 90 percent pigs, 10 percent blades like football heaven usually is?

Don't get the hate for radio sheffield football heaven team.
I think sheffield is fortunate to have a show dedicated to it's football teams for an hour every night. Whilst i don't listen every night i know some do!

If blades phone in - they talk about blades
If wednesday phone in - they talk about wednesday

Even the surrounding clubs get an option to be involved.

It just so happens the majority of callers are deluded wednesday fans that talk about Danny Rohl and Chansiri cos theyre massive and this directs the way the show goes.

I understand it's not everyones cup of tea but Rob and Andy do a great job, specifically with the full time match reaction interviews. The content is always considerably better than other providers. I've often watched pundits on Sky and they don't even know what positions our players play in they are that ignorant and biased towards the premier league.

For me radio sheffield is the only accurate broadcaster in terms of United.

Did anyone actually listen before slagging it off? It was pretty good. I mean, it’s not Frost-Nixon, it’s not meant to be. Wallace and Fleck were good value (much better than the grumpy, up-his-own—fat-arse Waddle they got on last time). I don’t know why I was surprised that Bannan and Fleck seem to be mates, but they were very pally, Tyrese Campbell just loves us, and goes up in my estimation every time he speaks or plays.

I really like FH anyway, I listen on catch up so I can FF through the endless Barnsley and Rotherham callers (no offence but I have zero interest in them as I am sure they don’t in us). Wednesday callers and testers are great comedy value as their victim mentality vies with their inflated egos to create some truly ludicrous calls.

just listening now its good stuff!

Not sure it’d be beneficial to limit our former player/current player guests to only lads from Sheffield. But hopefully you gave the show a go 👍🏻
I did and not that you asked for my view, but it was terrible listening (I generally enjoy FH/PorG). Four footballers with nothing interesting to say, the callers were the best but.

By the way, nobody was suggesting that you should feature only Sheffield born players, just cast the net a bit wider than Scotland, maybe even include overseas born players, ask them what a derby match might mean to them, have they played in derby matches anywhere else, how do they compare?

The problem you have FH, is that your weeknight show has become stale, same half dozen callers each night, nothing new or interesting being debated - hence the apathy & cynicism being shown in this thread.

Suggestion - revamp your football related phone ins, limit to Saturday post match, Monday post weekend reflections & Friday pre match debate.

We've actually revamped a lot of things in the last two years, it's a different experience these days and we've seen a very positive reaction in terms of figures and feedback. I do think sometimes it's popular to knock the show and I guess it comes with the territory. But it's all good, everyone's welcome to an opinion.

Thanks to those who watched it and have had nice things to say by the way. If anyone else wants to check it out before Sunday, it includes John Fleck and an interview with Tyrese Campbell. You can watch it here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/l0056zhz/football-heaven-steel-city-derby-special

I watched it... it was ok, and I appreciate the effort that went into getting the players involved. It's always nice to watch any content about United, and I don't have any beef about supposed biases - you do a good job with the balance (and will never win for some fans).

That said, I agree with the other comments above that it was just a bit average. Some of the questions were so banal they just invite the same old vanilla answers.
  • "Flecky, what was it like playing against Barry Bannan?"
  • "Yeah, he's a really good player".
I mean what was he supposed to say? "He's probably past it now, and he was pretty shit to begin with - I hate him".
  • "Tyrese, what was it like to score in the derby match?"
  • "Yeah, it was a great feeling - luckily it went in".
Likewise - what insights were you really expecting? "Ah, to score a goal—such a transcendental moment, a sublime collision of sweat, anticipation, and the eternal rhythm of the game. When the ball left my foot, it was as if time itself bent to my will, a fleeting eternity captured in the most fleeting of motions. In that instant, my heart became the drumbeat of the Earth, pounding with the fury of a thousand storms, yet my body moved as if floating through a dream, a divine grace and primal power entwined. The net rippled like the breath of the universe, and for a moment, I was not a mere player - I was the harbinger of all that is possible. The crowd’s roar surrounded me, a mighty crescendo of voices that seemed to echo through the very corridors of history. It was not just a goal; it was a testament to the struggle, the sacrifice, the countless hours spent in the dark corners of the pitch, the quiet moments where doubt was silenced by the relentless pursuit of mastery. And in this one sacred strike, I was both the architect and the creation, the dreamer and the dream."

Scrap the callers full stop. That sort of thing belongs in the pre internet age and it’s cringeworthy.

Other than that I quite like Radio Sheffield’s football coverage.

Am still waiting for your answer

Will subtitles be available soon?

In fairness, I didn't really offer any helpful suggestions. Media isn't my thing, so I don't have any ideas. However, I definitely think that trying a different format that isn't just "What's it like to..." would be helpful. Let's not forget that Radio Sheffield (through the late great Bob Jackson) invented the football phone in, which was groundbreaking at the time. I reckon you could stick your neck out and try something more bold.

It probably depends on which players you can get involved. Much as I love John Fleck, he was always going to be the type to give safe answers to everything (same goes for Ross Wallace). Bannon came across as the most willing to have a bit of a laugh.

If you can get the right guests, that's when you can start to twist the format a bit and start asking more leftfield questions - you'll get some good and unexpected answers.

The reliance on the same few posters for much too long put many off. I admit l don’t have any ideas for any sort of format change but the powers that be should have been considering that quite some time ago.

It's not strictly true that the show 'relies' on regular callers. We've made active changes over a three year period and shows like yesterday, with no calls, are part of that process and planning. Are there regulars? Yes, naturally. But it's not the focal point some make out. And we've had some pretty viral moments over the last 18 months courtesy of passionate non-regulars coming on to talk about big and emotive issues.

The point l made was that you clearly did, and for quite some time. Both fanbases commented on it regularly. As you say, you’ve made active changes so to try to suggest otherwise is a bit rich.

From the bit I watched I really enjoyed it. Mainly saw the Tyrese Campbell segment. He was being rather modest especially the question about scoring a goal on Sunday. Great player such a Blade I think FH were right he could become a legend in such a short space of time if he does.

I know it's because I'm 63 but I can't get behind calling it the steel city derby, I've never liked it for some reason, it was always the sheffield derby in my youth and that's the one I stick with
