It for some reason became message board groupthink for it to be acceptable for our midfielders to be one dimensional (I think this grew out of people defending Monty, fwiw, but nothing turns on it). This is in my eyes a ridiculous position. Just about every week we are faced with midfielders who have both attacking and defensive qualities. These players do exist and it is very poor squad management that we don't have any such players.
That said, looking at what we have, For a midfielder Baxter is doing the attacking side well - he gets goals and assists. Nobody else does this regularly in our central midfield. But they are not defending either - look at the goals that have been scored when people run through us, or the ball is half cleared and not picked up.
Basham has his uses but the likes of Hammond, Coutts, Reed and Scougall are verging on no dimensional, not one dimensional. Half hearted defending and couple of assists a season is not good enough.
