Arrested: Everton forward Jose Baxter

Promising Everton forward Jose Baxter has been arrested on suspicion of possessing cannabis with intent to supply as well as having counterfeit money.

The 17-year-old has been released on police bail after being arrested on Monday in the Kirkby area of Liverpool along with two men aged 29 and 34.

Baxter, from Bootle, made his professional debut for the club on the first day of last season as a substitute.

The appearance made him Everton's youngest ever senior player, aged 16 years and 191 days.

This season he has represented the team twice in the UEFA Europa League and has been earning rave reviews for his performances with the reserves and youth team.

Baxter has been with the club since he was six and was handed a two-and-a-half-year deal in April.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Three men have been arrested in Kirkby on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of counterfeit money.

"All three men have been released on police bail pending further inquiries."

A spokesman for Everton Football Club refused to comment.

I've been told by several different people, that once upon a time it is alleged that a now former Everton player was only on £200 because he was making so much more than that selling sniff to the youth team.

Sounds nonsense, but several people from that area how all suggested that it was true

Interesting article from the Guardian from 2013.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/feb/15/drug-testing-football

It would seem that anyone caught for recreational drugs probably won't be named as this is the FA's policy.

It's still an "if" at the moment but I imagine Clough will not be very happy if this has happened. Wonder if Baxter's "illness" may go on for some time ..............maybe until early November.

"Just one was a performance-enhancing stimulant, methylhexaneamine, for which the Barnet player Mark Marshall received a two-year ban from football; the other three were positive tests for cannabis out of competition. Two players received a one-month suspension, the other was suspended for three months, and were not named according to the FA's policy not to do so for social, rather than performance-enhancing drugs, out of competition."

I still think we should get shut.

From a professional sports perspective there's a big difference between recreational drugs like cocaine and performance-enhancers like steroids. For the former, you aren't going out deliberately to cheat. If anything the recreational drugs will negatively affect your performance. So we're not looking at a season ban/

If the rumours are true he should get off with a relatively light punishment, like a month's suspension. The question is, would NC want anything more to do with a player who got off his face at a crucial point in our season Only rumours as yet, of course, but we know that Mr Clough isn't the most liberal when it comes to matters of team discipline.

When it's the same rumour repeated that many times though it starts to seem more plausible.

It seems more plausible but it's very easy for one source just to get amplified with everyone just repeating what they've heard.

"A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its boots."

Baxter may be breaking bad but Twitter isn't the place to find out.

No-one knows if there is any truth in this and best not to talk too much about the specifics until the situation becomes clear, especially as I have seen this thread referred to in other parts of the net.

It did remind me of the case of Roger Stanislaus in 1995. I went to the game in question (Orient away to Barnet). It was obvious something was wrong that day - he was left back and Darren Currie, TC's nephew, was in the team (reason I went to watch it). DC ended up playing LB more than RS who kept disappearing up front as a very erratic striker. There is an interesting article which came out at the time - http://www.wsc.co.uk/the-archive/31-Players/7154-a-testing-time. I don't know what has changed since then to be honest.

Former Arsenal trainee Stanislaus did his 12 month ban and did subsequently manage to get a contract with Peterborough - but never appeared for the first team. His career then ended. Huddersfield's Craig Whitington received a 10 month ban for Cannabis in 1996, Charlton's Jay Notley (coke, cannabis and speed) 1996 - 3 months rehabilitation, Adam Tanner of Ipswich (cocaine - 3 months ban) 1997. West Brom's Shane Nicholson (later to play at the Lane 2001-02) was also banned in 1997 for amphetemines. Mutu of Chelsea was banned for 7 months for cocaine use in 2003. There are other cases but the usual penalty is either a ban or a rehabilitation order without there appearing to be any apparent consistency. Usually it results in dismissal, but not always ( eg Paul Merson, Chris Armstrong, David Hillier and Ian Bowyer).

This is a general comment / question, but am I the only one that just assumes there'll be tons of footballers on cocaine? It's all part of the trendy, high flying lifestyle a lot of them like to portray. Same with bankers and other members of society's "elite" classes.

I say again for emphasis that this is a general assumption, I'm not saying that this is what Jose has been up to, but it would neither surprise me, or really bother me, if that's what some of our players got up to in their own time, as long as they don't harm anyone else while they're on it. Plenty will find drugs as something to spend their excess cash on once they have all the cars, houses and clothes they want.

Should we wait for evidence or just get shut regardless?
Baxter "ill" with no explanation as far as I'm aware suggests to me Clough is not happy.

Given that it may be recreational drugs, it might not be made public anyway.

Of course Clough could yet get sacked but I doubt it. We've seen what has happened with others, they never play again if it transgresses his disciplinary code.

Obviously neither myself or any other supporter knows yet unless you know someone within the club but do you not find the following odd:
- Baxter declared ill
- Baxter also doesn't appear in the second leg
- no explanation of this illness (unless I've missed this)
- a few sources suggesting he has failed a drugs test or "been a naughty boy"
- absolutely no comment from the club rubbishing the claims

Maybe he was ill, does anyone know what it was that kept him out of these games ?

Looks like he never played professionally again. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Stanislaus

They're generally tested for illegal recreational drugs so if there's cocaine use then it'll be uncovered. Sort of.

The system is far from perfect (in all sports) but that's the very basic response I'd give.

Wrt cocaine in particular I imagine there are clauses in contracts allowing the player to be dismissed for using this. Same goes for other illegal recreational drugs. Either because of the implications for team discipline or for the possible/likely effect on the player's ability. Cocaine use can end badly.

(Alcohol is a legal recreational drug.)

There are probably plenty of professional footballers using cocaine. I've known a few footballers of varying ability/fame and have near enough been witness to it on a few occasions - and according to them, it's rife within the pro game in England. How true that is, I don't know, it's just their own take on it but given what I know and have been told I imagine it probably is the case.

That's without putting 2+2 together like you say; young, wealthy and with time on your hands, living in a generation where drug use is commonplace anyway....

Fairy Nuff.

I wasn't aware of the statements about him being ill. Have they been made? If so that is an about turn as I think his name was mentioned publicly by Clough as a possible for the second leg. Of course so was the Beard's so this could all be fun and games.

At the moment it is all speculation.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

On a practical note though how would the information leak? These are private medical and professional matters. Details known to a handful of people (I'd like to think).
