Bastard M5 closure...

Indeed which bright twat thought it clever to close the M40 and M5 on the same night.
I learnt a salient lesson regardless if I know the route or not, but to always check google maps for live time info.

Is it changing them to intelligient motorways with those bloody variable speed limits?

Right pain in the arse...however-

We are just waiting for a new car which has some fancy sat nav system that is connected to the internet and has real time traffic connection. Apparently it is always looking for quicker routes and will divert if needed.
So the solution lads is to buy a new car!
Not sure it would manage to deal with a puncture mind.

I didn't go. I couldn't go unfortunately. But if I had have gone I wouldn't have touched the M5 - that's a bit of a bad route to take. I'd have gone M1/M69/A46/M40/Oxford/A420. Or alternatively, down the M1 to J16 then across the A43 to the M40. You won't need to remember this for next season though - that's the good news.

Its every night this ,at least 2 motorways close every night ,they give very little forward notice and diversions are useless. They seem to have been doing the M5 and M1 jtn 31 to 3 forever.

Rubbish, isn't it ? Commiserations to those caught in it last night.

It's getting hard to travel even short distances after about 8pm in this country now. I work in Derby, with a late finish once a week. One night before Christmas, setting off back to Sheff, I find the A38 in Derby closed with diversion. Ok. Fair enough. Eventually make it to J28 of M1, to find entry ramp heading north closed ... with diversion. After finally getting onto the A617 toward Chesterfield, guess what, halfway to Ches the road is closed ... with a diversion. Fucking hell ! Then, unbelievably, coming into the edge of Ches the bloody diversion road is closed, with a diversion added to the diversion ! GRRRRRR !!

One for the twats thread, I think

If it's a Citroen, good luck getting the dealership to activate it.

My best was when I came back from the Euros on a Friday night landed at 10 in Manchester. M67 was closed so went up M60 to M62 which was closed at Huddersfield ,diverted off for 2 junctions ,closed near Ikea so went down m621 and round ,M1 was shut at Wakefield so carried on M62 to A1 which was also pissing closed at Wentbridge , ended up coming down the M18 ,a 90 minute journey was over 3 hours ,welcome back. Must be a nightmare for any tourists coming here.

TWATS !

I use an app called WAZE on my phone (quite data intensive though). This, i have found to be great as it is community fed. It will detect when traffic is slowing down, or stopped and calculate a new route.
The only time i've been stuck is when I was between junctions and couldn't be re routed.

Had this with the M3 on Monday night. Approaching the (closed) junction to the M3 on the M25 the variable speeds were set to different speeds above the lanes - 30, 30, 50, 50 - which I have never seen before and is feckin' scary when some vehicles don't slow down at all, let alone to try and obey a different speed to the lane next to you.

At least the long midweekers are done for another season, been gruelling at times, 1,000 miles in the past month.

Highways agency fuck off until next season

Download Traffic View Lite for the smartphone real time and advance notice even gives you the speed of the traffic. Check before setting off very very good. Trouble with sat navs live traffic they always run behind. Checked app and was able to decide on alternative route. Would of saved you hours last night

Well on top of all the smart motorway stuff, it's local roadworks month, as councils clamour to spend all of last years budget on schemes they've ignored for the previous 11 months, twats !

That explains why all the roads and pavements around here are suddenly being done... Had a 3 mile divert to get to Aldi the other night...

I didnt go last night, but last week at Oxford, GoogleMaps worked a treat and avoided the M1- re routed due to the closure via M40/42

Went to Cornwall a couple of years ago. Got right to the end of the M5 (eventually) and it was being closed. Traffic all moving into 1 lane to leave (this was about 10pm) some wanker in an Audi cuts me up to get in lane and nearly caused an accident.
I was raging and gave the bastard main beam in the eyes until he was out of sight (i was in the camper). 13 hours after setting off arrives at campsite on Dartmoor where we are stopping off for the night. Puts the van lights on as it was pitch black and got invaded by every flying creature on Dartmoor.
Puts me off driving to Cornwall even though I love Crantock area and the Gannel.

Those sat navs are really good, a while ago mine told me about a car that had broken down on the M1 and was simply causing a little bit of congestion, no closures or anything, and it even warned me there'd been an incident on Penistone Road yesterday when that lorry came off the road.

A mate of mine recommended that app to me a couple of days ago.

I use it quite a lot now, even when i know where i'm going. The only issue is that it's quite data hungry, so if you're on a limited data package or PAYG i'd think twice about using it.

Same happened when we played Bristol a few weeks back - I live in Lancashire near Burnley and had closures on every motorway I was going on M32, M5,M6,M62,M60 and just when I thought I was safe and almost home I found that the bastard M66 was closed so got home about 3.15 am. Its rubbish that they have to close motorways altogether -why cant they close a couple of lanes and leave at least one open so people can at least keep going.
Another thing thats so annoying is that the diversions are totally inadequate and difficult to follow so its often easy to go off track and add even more time on finding a way back

I didn't travel back until today so should've been OK. Managed to be one of 10 cars that hit a big piece of aluminium on the M1 that some tosser hadn't loaded onto a trailer properly though so got back 2 hours later than I should've done...
