My thoughts exactly. The whole point of articles like these is that, far from being an exact science, it's more a case of 'right man in the right place at the right time.' Both Bassett and Warnock certainly were.
 
Bassett taking over after Micky Adams would have been an unmitigated disaster. He's regarded as a legend at the Lane and he earned that status but let's not pretend for a second that a second stint 16 years after his first one ended would have worked out. He was in the management team which culminated in us crashing out of the Championship with some of the worst discipline, team spirit and performances I can remember.
 
Two successive promotions culminating on that day, May 5th 1990 at Leicester gives him the legendary status.

Let's hope one of his former players can repeat the feat, starting with an away match at Milton Keynes and then not messing about with all this 'let's consolidate in the Championship' stuff.

Anyone who watched the Blades during the awful McEwan era, knows that Bassett performed miracles to take us from the then Division 3 to Division 1 in successive seasons.

We were a poor side with poor players, no money, no confidence and no hope when he came in and within 2-3 seasons, somehow he turned us into a competitive first division side beating the likes of Liverpool and Man Utd.

We were on our arse weren't we. Those dirty bastards in the top division, no money, the supporters had no money, recession following recession, high unemployment. The mid eighties was pretty shit all round.

I suppose quite similar to the austerity years we're going through now, but a much bigger shock as people still believed in a 'job for life', particularly in the white collar sector which had never seen mass redundancy.

United, being in those days a predominantly working class club suffered badly; the combination of fans being skint, the violence around the games and the associated heavy policing led to poor attendances and poor gate receipts.

And, with this background, Harry turned up and took us back to the top division. And perhaps saved us from being a Notts County/Bristol Rovers type small club with a big city rival.

4 points after 16 games and finished 14th. The following season we finished 9th. The last time two clubs from Sheffield finished in the top 10 in the top flight.

Yes, though in fairness to Bassett I believe the majority of his time was focused on answering the telephone in Adams's office and arranging his filing system.

I think it was an advisory role. But that’s not Bassett’s strength. He wasn’t some master tactician. He was a charismatic man who could pull together a group to be so much more than the sum of its parts. He could instil an aggression and belief in his team that meant more talented opponents hated playing us. He’s the sort of guy who needs to be at the coalface, not advising from an office.

But I agree, a 2nd spell would have been a disaster. The world is very different now and his methods of man management would land him in all sorts of hot water in today’s world and certainly wouldn’t be effective. Right man, right time the first time. It was right to not go back. But the idea that the board wanted him but “didn’t like to ask” seems odd. Why would they “not like to ask”?

Why are some of our best games v the scabs .
First win of that season , followed by beating Luton ok the hammering at Arsenal was to be expected .
The play off win , then the cup result to set up the Sheffield quarter final , guffa guffa .
First away match on my own was one to forget 6-1 v forest away

Dunno but Bassett was like Clough's nemesis. Knocked Brighton out of the cup when Clough was manager and Bassett was in non-league (think it was Sutton but my memory's fucked and I'm too lazy to google it) and beat him at the City Ground at his last ever game.
That seems to have continued, as you say, with the playoffs etc. We even beat them under Adams.
