I've been saying it for a year. He's a squad player at best. Doesn't excel at any particular skill and lacks mobility. Another one we have to replace if we want to push for promotion.
The lad tries and has a good attitude but we simply have to do better if we want to move forward. Not good enough.
This again highlights or current predicament. Over the last 6 or more years, we have let good players go (Beattie, Blackman, Quinn, Maguire, etc.) and replaced them with lesser talented players. Then we let the lesser talented players go and replace them with even less talented players, or players with terrible injury records that we "take a chance on", or journeyman players looking for a final paycheck who we "take a chance on", and eventually, you end up with a team where nearly everyone needs replacing.
I am sure that CW knew that we needed to bin virtually the entire team, but also knew that was not a realistic possibility, so had to try and keep the best of a bad bunch, and hope that people would come in with offers for Coutts and co, so that he could then buy more players and eventually get rid of the remainder of the" best of a bad bunch".
Without serious money from the clubs owners, we won't do this overnight.
(imagine a real high roller bankrolling the club)
"who do we need Chris?"
"well I would say an entire new team made up of all the best players from League 2, League 1, and a couple of experienced, below-the-radar Championship players, mid to late 20's, big, strong and fast, who are not getting first team games at their clubs, maybe even a young Premier League loanee"
"OK and how much would this cost Chris?"
"probably the best part of 10 million, maybe more"
"Well surely that 10 million would be repaid once we get out of League 1 and in the Championships wouldn't it Chris?",
"well yes it would Boss"
" well there you go then, I will arrange the funds this week, go and make it happen Chris, we can't have a club like Sheffield United in League 1 any longer",
"Thanks Boss"
"Thanks Chris"
